Love this song and the whole living in the usa album I used to have it on tape it was my moms and I kinda stole it from her lol I used to listen to it over and over thanks for posting all these videos. I need to find this album on cd!
@MsPerogi Elvis did write Alison, and released it in 77. He didn't like her version. Years later, Costello joked that he might have been publicly derisive of Ronstadt's version, "but I didn’t mind spending the money that she earned me".
My mom named me for this song :') She used to sing it to me when I was little to get me to sleep, and changed the "I know this world is killing you" to "thrilling you" <3 Love this song so much.
Still got a crush on her after nearly 40 years. The Queen of White Soul, at least in my mind. She is so cute, but she crushes songs written for men. Grest work. Thanks for posting. The pic collection shows I'm not the only one with a crush!
I bought the Living In the USA when it was first released in NewZealand, and lost all my LP's when I shipped my gear to Australia when I moved over there back in 1980. Thank you having this on you tube, so can listen to Linda again :)
her collaboration with Peter Asher was one of the best things to happen to music in the last 40 years--and grossly overlooked. fantastic stuff. the perfect pieces and the perfect arrangements and performances. Bravo, Ms. Ronstadt.
So beautiful she is so beautiful.. to me one of the most beautiful women ever.. i always wanted to "be" her.. thanks for posting these.. i have the album!!!
That's David Sanborn accompanying her with the alto sax. Sure made the song better ... not that she ever needed it, mind you. But I am so happy she called him in on this session. :)
I don't think that you know what the song is about...the only thing that Ronstadt changes is the the last line of the first verse where she sings "I only know it wasn't mine" rather than the original "I only know it isn't mine." which is merely a present tense to a past tense change.
Sheer musical genius to have Linda's final singing note blend into that gorgeous saxophone solo. My favorite moment in all of Ronstadt's recordings. Can't thank you enough for posting this.
Thanks--I saw her live promoting "Canciones de mi Padre"; as you probably know, she sounds BETTER live than on record--not too many artist can do that....
I always thought her version of Costello's classic ballad was under-rated. Linda's first foray into the then growing trend of "new wave/alternative music", back in 1978.
Her 1980 album, Mad Love, has another girl's-name-title on it, "Justine". That album is an all-out alternative record. "Costs Of Love' has a real new wave feel to it, and "How Do I Make You" borders on the edge of punk. My favorite song from the album is probably "I Can't Let Go".
It's no surprise Mad Love is a great album since Linda has had success in all genres she has tried: rock , jazz, R&B, gospel, opera, country, and mariachi.
Funny, "Justine" is my favorite on Mad Love. Always has been for all these years. Most critics panned Mad Love but some liked it. Interestingly, more recent reviews of it are more favorable, the first, early reviews of it in 1980 were mostly negative. I think time has changed some opinions.
The the Costello songs are critical to "Mad Love" and that's where most critics, who adore EC, agreed with him and did not like her versions.
It's all exaggerated. I think her versions of his songs are good and worthy, if not always spot-on. "Party Girl" drags a bit and is a bit too sentimental. "Girls Talk" is ok but a bit off if you ask me. The timing/tempo or something. Hard to pinpoint.
But overall, I like Mad Love and Get Closer too, which I think is underrated.
I haven't heard all her other covers, but covers are hard to get perfect, but worthy to try. She smoked River is wide, tumbling dice, blue bayou, and a bunch of others.
All I know is this is one of my favourite songs, and I really like her treatment of it.
You are so right.....doing covers is not the easiest path and LR made a career out of it. In fact, about 95% of her recordings are covers - most not well known, some well known. If she had recorded new unrecorded songs, she could have avoided the inevitable comparisons with previous versions. Three tracks you should check out. All That You Dream, Mohammed's Radio (both Living in the USA cd) and Roll 'Um Easy (Prisoner in Disguise cd). What is "River is wide"?
Thanks - I'll check them out. J.D. Souther wrote a song with the lyric "then you know, that the river is wide" in it. It was on the album with Carmelita, I believe in You, and Blue Bayou, I think. I've tried to find that song, unsuccesfully over the years.

she has a nice voice... don't get me wrong... but why is she singing this? it makes no sense. elvis is lucky he can count the royalties.

yes, especially considering the subject matter... unless Linda is a carpet muncher, which I find hard to believe... "I know it isn't mine"
winstonsmith60626 3 years ago
listen carefully. she changes the words and applies it to a "girl friend" not a "girlfriend".
