They found that there was cotton woven in the samples they tested. Not pure flax. It was believed to have been repaired by nuns long ago who sewn cotton in with the flax hence causing mid-evil dates. The scientists state that the sample(s) were taken from the worst possible area of the shroud.
@Flagrum3 Thank you for the status of the 1988 C-14 tests. Just to give a few more details: Spelling of the science journal is "Thermochimica Acta". The peer-reviewed paper by Raymond N. Rogers titled "Studies on the Radiocarbon Sample from the Shroud of Turin" is in Thermochimica Acta, Volume 425, Issues 1–2, 20 January 2005, Pages 189-194 (may be purchased online at sciencedirect dot kahm). For background see video on YouTube: "Discovery Channel - Unwrapping the Shroud of Turin New Evidence".
@vszasz The Shroud was caught in a fire in which it was burned (around the edges) & later repaired. It was a mix of these new fibers & the original shroud that were carbon dated.
@vszasz -The carbon dating done in 1988 has been deemed 'INVALID', therefore it now has no standing!...Read Ray Rogers, Thermo Chemica Acta 2005, to understand how. There has also been alot of evidence put forward proving the original tests were extremely flawed too start with, in that procedures and protocols were not followed properly. The C14 tests were the only 'scientific evidence' against the Shrouds authenticity to date, and now has been undeniably refutted..More tests need to be done.

What about the carbon dating? Didn't that settle this as a hoax?

@vszasz evidently not.

@vszasz Read about the radiocarbon dating on wikipedia. There are good reasons to believe that the radiocarbon dating was screwed up by the testers.
