@dngl21 duly noted; I can't imagine being the poor kid sleeping while those gay letters fly through his window. Plus, the company didn't have a very good track record (i.e. Captain Planet), and hearing the kid pronouncing the company name at the end made me feel like a rape victim.
Creepy how? The Hanna Barbara one with the flying star just tells me that the Woody Woodpecker show is about to come on, back in 1988, when I was in the first grade. Back when there was still such a thing as after-school cartoons.
...How are these creepy? I was expecting more along the lines of something like Giygas... except Viacom. Viacom is scary because they take teenagers hard work at making YTPs and just destroy them... with a V shaped hammer on fire, probably.
I just feel nostalgia at seeing these old logos. I can't remember any logo that scared me as a kid. I can't quite see how they would scare me. Maybe if they had clowns, clowns were one of the few things that did scare me. That, and horror movies. I actually, LOVED most of these logos, especially the sci-fi sounding and looking ones, that reminded me of Tron. "Sit UBU, sit" was fun!
I liken those who don't understand the "creepy" aspect of these logos to people who incessantly ask "why?" when they see abstract art. Experience the burden of "why?" Some of these scared me beyond belief when I was a child; they threatened to invade my untainted outlook on life.
@Decades81 They ask "why" because they genuinely don't see what exactly is supposed to be scary. We're asked to see into the mind of another, but can't find where to start. These logos conjure feelings in many people, none in others. I only feel fondness for many of the logos out of a since of a remembrance of fun shows. As a child, some logos I found fascinating, especially those that looked futuristic by having neon lighting or metallic logos, like robots which I was fond of as a girl.
There was one over here in the UK that scared the crap out of kids in the 1970's. It would come out of nowhere and the following fanfare would make you jump a mile high. I refer you to the Yorkshire Television chevron of the 1970's and 1980's. Even now, I still shudder at the sound of it, and I'm in my 40's!
0:14 is somehow scary so it seems. believing that this was used for a lot of tv show through the 70's and rare appearances until 2001. I was a analog/digital person and that allays gives nostalgics since its last appearance on cable/satellite, it gives the feeling of someone's watching me because of my mistakes that almost led me to an immature violent faggot. Though was my past favorites, i lay my case.
R.I.P. HB Production for Ted's failure because the switch to Cartoon Network Studios blows.
Good selection of logos. The ones I like best are the HB Swirling Star and the DiC Kid in Bed because I grew up with them. As for the DKIB logo, I could not recognise the music. The Screen Gems logo had the Lorimar music while the second CTW logo had the WGBH music, which works very well with it. The sound on the Metro Media and NET logos is a bit jumpy though.
Omg.the first one scared me to death when i was little. So did the dic one 0_0 I also hated the worldview (whatevr its calld) one so much i used to cover my ears wen it came on.Thumbs up if u did too:/
I never liked the old, slowly rotating HBO logo with its over-the-top fanfare. Or the MPAA rating that followed right behind. I'd have to leave the room until the movie started.
HOLY CRAP! Paramount's "Closest Killer" and 1991-200 "Home Video Feature Presentation plus FBI Warning" logo scared me shit, piss and all when I was little...
May of these are quite scary...but not the original PBS logo or the one they played before the Muppet Show. These make me think of happy childhood entertainment! the DIC logo shown here is just plain evil, however. As is the famous Paramount "Closet Killer".
Wow, now I see why so many people talk about the Simitar Entertainment logo. It sounds like something you would hear during a horror movie. And the dic logo on here is the one I remember that creeped me out as a kid. Most of the logos are not necessarily scary, but they do come across as a bit eerie,
If you mean the 1988-99 Worldvision "WHOOSH Globe" due to the music sounding rather out of date with that two-note Moog synthesizer jingle after the opening WHOOSH sound (the "third" note is actually just the second note without the wind sound playing over it).
@nvmarcus For many of us, it's not that we're piss-our-pants-behind-the-sofa terrified of them. They're just unnerving. You must admit, the composers of those synth melodies didn't bother to make them sound natural or musically pleasing in any way. I think some of them are even intentionally dissonant. In many people, they provoke a reaction of, "This is not normal. I don't want to listen to this."
...Though, I find it fun to listen to unsettling noises. (Nightmare Fetishist, I guess.)
I wonder WTF were they thinking when they created these fuckin' freaks of sounds and graphics? Or was it just the technology that was available back then?
From my logo research, it can be very complicated to make a logo that is not scary. Since I am only 12, I have been studying lots of logos to help me (if I ever run a TV podcast someday) create a logo thats not scary. These were some great examples that showed me what to avoid. Thank you!! ^U^
@MiniStrawberryCakes9 To make a good logo just make it plain and simple. Primitive shapes and a really easy to remember name of the company. The only reason these are classed as scary would probably be that they are older.
@sonicfanornonfan I'm not scared of it anymore lol. But I was terrified of it as a little kid. 15 now, still creeps me out a little, but it's not like I was when I was little. I used to run and hide at the end of every show because it would come on. Ah well XD
@sonicfanornonfan LOL. She used to go "Oh come on! It's only a drawing." I was still scared out of my wits by that logo. Mind you, I was only four at the time, it's not that uncommon for little kids to be afraid of weird things XD
Children's Television Workshop,i used to love that as a kid, where is the THX intro thingie, that shit is scary even now and I'm now 30 and it says scariest but that pretty much covers em all, lmao
EBS - I would run like a scalded cat and hide behind my grandmothers chair when I heard - "This is a test of the emergency broadcast system...this is only a test." EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE - HOLY SCHNIKIES THAT CREEPED ME OUT. That test squeal was scarier than any natural disaster or nuclear bomb...
ahhahah I thougth i was teh only one to get scaried to death with these things... i guess it's the best translation for my odd fobia of infinite patterns.
Wasn't really a scared thing per se. it's kind of complicated how it works. something about abstract sounds, colors, shapes, and other things tend to... send some children's old instincts off, making them afraid without knowing exactly WHY they are afraid, which makes them even more afraid and associate the abstract fear with the footage.
essentially, it was literally fearing fear itself.
@Exarian Yeah I understand this concept. When I was young these made me excited, not scared. The only things that scared me for no reason when I was young was the spaceballs commercial and the music in the NES version of dejavu when my mom played it... didnt stop me from loving the movie and playing that game till my brain exploded later though. The people who still watched these are cool. I was just making a sick joke because some people are just too pussy still in their adulthood.
@Exarian plus even my mom says when I found something that scared me I liked to watch it over and over again. Far back as I can remember i liked the feeling it gave me. It reminded me of the vacuum cleaner feeling. Vhhhuuuummmmmmm
This freaks me out now that it's put into this kind of context... Makes me think of some kind of New World Order mind control shit from reptilian aliens that are using these stations to control us :(
ugh, with the childrens television workshop logo, did they really not think tht would freak kids out? i mean really think before u make a logo for a kids show.
Just out of 100% curiosity: what about these station ID's brought about such fear to so many of you. I remember so many of these and enjoying most of them. Especially the ones for Dic, PBS, and the Childrens Television Workshop.
@TJNightshayde For me, it mostly had to do with the music in the background. Some of that synthesized music just sounded otherworldly and disjointed...and it felt like it was trying to make me disjointed with it. And then there was the Paramount "Closet Killer" Theme, the second one here. That one used to give me nightmares about psycho truck drivers. That music just seemed like perfect music to induce a passing truck driver to unleash his inner psycho!
@rickyfan3956 Thanks for the response! I couldn't imagine what aspect of these was creepy. Perhaps I just have a different perception than a lot of people. Thanks again!
out of all the scary logos. number 2 would be the scariest, i hate things that comes up right in your face, although saying that i did play a lot of doom when i was little!!!
the music to logo 5 would be the scariest music, i would shit myself listening to that waking up with my telly blasting out loud lol

This freaks me out now that it's put into this kind of context... Makes me think of some kind of New World Order mind control shit from reptilian aliens that are using these stations to control us :(

Just out of 100% curiosity: what about these station ID's brought about such fear to so many of you. I remember so many of these and enjoying most of them. Especially the ones for Dic, PBS, and the Childrens Television Workshop.
TJNightshayde 10 months ago

I never really saw these as scary, I guess it's just growing up around television.
For some reason, seeing these makes me want to go eat at the theme building restaurant at LAX.
