From USA MN Gods speed to Love in this world because, once again we need it.
Thanks for posting this original version of a true rock classic! The video is very well done, and it is synchronized with the music seemlessly! I'm not going to go into whose version is best, because who really couldn't have done this masterpiece well? I must admit that while I am partial to this original version (since it's the first I heard), Nilsson, of course, really made it the hit it was. Seeing and hearing this now really brings back a flood of memories from the early 70's.
I love all the covers of this song and as much as I totally loved Badfinger, before their horrid manager Stan Polley f*cked them up, I like Nilsson's version the best of all. Maybe because it seemed sadder with his voice and how many of us have felt.
@ShellTrek Don't be embarrassed! I grew up in that era, but don't remember hearing this version, because Harry Nilsson was the one who popularized this song. His version got far more air time, and it does feel that Nilsson sings it more passionately.
@greenaissance1 Agreed. Ham and Evans did a brilliant job of writing the song but Nilsson was the consummate arranger. Nilsson added that touch that made the song shine. Sad. RIP Ham, Evans, and Nilsson.
Interesting, I grew up during this period, loved Badfinger and I always thought that this was Harry Nilsson's song. Oh well, I learned something today! Harry's version is by far the best btw.
Whatever. Badfinger was a great but they don't do this song justice. Harry Nilsson's version is dramatically better. Harry sang it with soul. And no, Mariah's version is NOT better. I agree she's good but can't hold a candle to Harry's incredible version.
This will always be the best version. You can't replace the original and Pete Ham's voice is so soothing. Multi 70s must like Silverstone and Jennifer Connelly. Jennifer looks amazing here!
"Great songwriters are often recognized by how other artists sing and perform their songs." - Stevie Wonder. This song by Badfinger, made famous by Harry Nilsson, proves his point.
@ramon19141 Here Here! Or should I say, hear hear!! Badfinger was a great unit, their story is a great study in the dark side of this business we love so much, but can sometimes cause so much pain.
One could make the argument that pete h. is the greatest rock n roll artist ever, aside from the late great robert johnson who started it all. He's a member of the 27 club and is a singer/guitar player like hendrix. Is he more talented than hendrix? Morrison? Kobain? maybe
I grew up with the Nilsson version. I'm 40 now, and I just heard Badfinger's version for the first time! Nilsson's version will always be my favorite. I love Mariah Carey, but hers doesn't compare to Nilsson's. In Badfinger's version, I don't like how they cut their words short in the chorus. I guess I'm just too used to Harry Nilsson's version. :)
How is it possible for Badfinger to screw Carey over this song when at the time they wrote and recorded this beautiful song they didnt even know that Carey even existed. Can somebody enlighten me.
I would suggest you check out NIllson's version it is great, after all though Badfinger wrote and recorded this song, he was the one who brought out this song to the people. I mean he really displayed his vocal ability and cracked his vocal chords literally, correct me if I am wrong. He even won a grammy for this.Carey managed to butcher this song. The only good that came out was she become world famous. BF's version is full of heart and soul, emotional, shows extreme raw talent, best song ever.
@nicky196427 Agree with you about Badfinger's version of this song. It is the original. I think Nilsson's voice was damaged by his drinking bouts with John Lennon, in 1974, from what I've read.
@Tuzotonic - See my channel profile to find out, and thanks for the info - I always confused Nilsson's version with Eric Carmen's "All By Myself," which is truly very whiney.
I can definitely understand why you would think it was Eric Carmen on the remake of Without You. It sound like him a bit and Nilsson's version is similar to All By Myself. Oh and I looked at your channel and enjoyed it very much. I plan on spending more time going through those clips when I have more time. Cheers!
Great images, but a little over done with too many transitions. No need to use every tool in the box. Leonardo da Vinci said it best, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication".

I heard this on Radio Station in Perth Western Australia and it's was good. NO! Better. Perhaps The Best! Yes the Best song you will ever hear on Radio to this day. It's the Perfect love song you will ever hear in English. Thanks.
First off......amazing video, a hell of a lot of work must of went into this! Secondly-- THIS IS the definitive version of this song, no ifs, ands, or buts about it!!! Badfinger was an outstanding band, they've never gotten the credit they deserve!
@pef286 yeah, but i think it was nilsson who made this a suicide song with his interpretation. Some might say he also committed a slow suicide by drinking too much
I like Nilsson's version better, he sustains a longer note on the "live" part of the "I can't live" line. Nothing against Badfinger, who wrote the song and did a fine version, but Nilsson had an amazing voice.
after listening the two versions, the BADFINGER and NELSON, i prefer listening this version. i like the backup instruments. BADFINGER THE BEST VERSION! THANKS FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL VIDEO.
This was originally recorded by Badfinger in 1970, and appeared on their second album, No Dice. Nilsson wrote most of the songs he recorded, and many listeners assumed that this heart-wrenching ballad was also one of his compositions.
Badfinger members Peter Ham and Tom Evans wrote this. Ham had written a song called "Is This Love?," but wasn't happy with the chorus.
@Knight2you but had no verses for it, so they put the 2 songs together as one. (thanks, Tom - Mishawaka, IN)
Nilsson first came across this song at a Laurel Canyon party in 1971 and thought it was a Beatles song. Badfinger was signed to Apple Records, The Beatles' label. The story did not end well for Badfinger: Both Ham and Evans became despondent when they encountered various legal difficulties and committed suicide. Ham hanged himself in 1975 and Evans did the same in 1983.
Nillson did a much better job with the song than Badfinger - but sadly, both Pete Ham and Tom Evans committed suicide (8 years apart), and it had to do with getting screwed out of their royalties from Without You.
@rktbusinc - I don't know your situation, but in songs like this that have been remade several times people have a tendency to prefer the version they heard first. I heard this one first, and I don't even care to listen to Nilsson's or any other version. To me this is perfection. (Not to be confused with the Badfinger song called "Perfection").
@TuberOnTheLoose Not true for me. I heard Mariah's version first, then heard Nilsson's. I preferred Nilsson's. Then I found this original Badfinger version, and now I think it's the best out of all of them. Maybe it's just because I think it's best as a soft rock song.
@TCTriangle Same here. I was drawn to Mariah Carey's song when it first came out, but after hearing Nilsson's I never went back to Mariah's version. Thanks to YouTube I found the original version which I love even better than Nilsson's (his piano demo is amazing though)
@omalleydp1 - Pete Ham, wrote "No, I can't forget this evening, your face as you were leaving..." also died, 8 years before [d.1975] Tom Evans [d. 1983]. What I have read of the band's history - Pete and Tom were murdered. They committed suicide, in their case, due to such horrifying circumstances, both were let down very badly by people they trusted. Pete and Tom became so overwhelmed and pushed beyond the brink. Not all suicides are the same. Each one of us affects others good or bad.
There's an interesting factual story behind this song. Pete Ham had the VERSE worked out, but was having trouble with his chorus. Tom Evans had a CHORUS finished but couldn't get a proper verse. They were working separately on these. One night, Pete was on his way out with his girl Bev when Tom asked him to listen to his chorus. Pete listened, then ended up not going out, as he realized his Verse might go with Tom's Chorus suggesting they try blending the two together. AMAZING HISTORY!
@VenusCapricorn I think when Pete went out to the party and saw the sadness in Bev's eyes, he wrote the song and the famous verse. There are the two demos from him at two different times. Later on is when I think he had the brainstorm to use Tom's chorus (which was from a completed song of Tom's) There is a rare CD in the Badfinger first book that helps explain it by showing the earliest demos.
@Kristenbillick - Hi. Actually I have listened to those demos. But I don't think that Tom's song was complete. He was having trouble with his verse, hence needing Pete to give a listen. And Pete's verse magically fit with Tom's chorus. Yes Pete was brilliant to put them together. joey lies in an interview saying collins put the song together. *I have the link of the interview if you want to read it.* joey wasn't in the band when Pete and Tom made the demos, and collins wasn't involved.
