@nickoberon decades of 'feminism' and women being the only role models in their son's lives. the feminist concepts are fine: the way they expressed them was wrong. especially to male youth. yes - men and women should get the same pay for doing the same amount of work. but decades of women told boys that taking the initiative with a girl is wrong. then the same women complain ''there's no men around anymore''. that's like lighting a dynamite and being made when it explodes. viva male empowerment
Ugh I loathe him, such an dickface bastard. Reeks of paternalistic arrogance and mysogyny... not saying it's not realistic for the period of course! Hate Scarlett too, for that matter. I guess they deserve each other?
ah fear me, love me, do what i say and i will be your slave... i always remember that line from Jareth every time I think of how Rhett spoiled & taunted Scarlett in their very unique relationship, but they're just both too proud, I guess more cautious in his part and Scarlett realized hers just too late...still I love this story~
What do you think he means when he says "I always get paid" - what is he wanting from Scarlett (and he would never have taken her as his mistress (according to the book) - even though she offered him herself at the jail)? Do you think even in this scene he is pursuing her so that one day she will marry him?
@Herbielondon In the book he didn't accept her as his mistress cuz he couldn't even get money at the moment. and also I think he wanted her love, not just her body. He really wanted to win her heart, but he doesn't really show it till the end, but there ARE hints throughout the book of him really caring for her, and Scarlett is merely suspecting it but she doesn't really know. (: Love this book/movie
@Herbielondon I know he SAYS he s not the marrying kind and he may not have been UNTILL he met Scarlet. I think he wants to marry her even then but is trying to protect his heart as he knows who she really loves and its NOT him. Sadly you can only protect your heart so long..you love who you love and no help for it
I think every woman has had that "I need to be kissed and by a man who knows how!" moment, and it makes them scream at the movie that Scarlett is turning Rhett down in this scene.
@elypin and @bykarti - I agree with @bykarti - he is just tired and hurt and fed up and needs to get away. He does love her - he has loved her for 12 years and then with his own grief for Bonnie and to a lesser extent Melly, he just needs to get away for a bit. He won't find what he is looking for in Charleston because it doesn't exist any more. And I think there is also a real sexual attraction between him and Scarlett which will make him want to come back. Give him time..they'll be together.
@elyplin no,he LOVES her,but he is HURT.That's story shows what happens when u understand that u love sb a little too late...oh,Im gonna cry bc of that film again!

Oh SNAP! Rhett is one slick sonsabitch, I give you that. I wonder how it would have turned out if Bette Davis had played the role of Scarlett. Poor Rhett might have been emasculated, but that's the price you gotta pay when playing with Bette Davis :P
@sugarcane32 The book ends when Rhett leaves her. Margaret Mitchell said she doesn't know what happened after that. "For all I know, Rhett may have found someone else who was less difficult" she wrote. I've read she planned to write a sequel, but died before that. Oh, and there's that "sequel", Scarlett, written by Alexandra Ripley on the request of the Margaret Mitchell estate, but it's consider inferior to the original book.
I don't think that Ashley Wilkes should get such a bad rap. Sure, compared to a fiery Rhett Butler he might come off as uncharismatic and downright boring, but he’s a pacifist and managed to stay faithful to Melanie with the likes of Scarlett chasing after him, both of which are very admirable traits indeed. A combination of the two would be ideal, of course, but personally, I would take an Ashley Wilkes over a Rhett Butler any day. Gentleness doesn’t necessarily equate to weakness. =)
Roger Ebert once said that you should take out the word "Kissing" and replace it with "Fucking" if you reall wanted to get what Rhett was saying...Scarlett's whole problem was that she was uptight about sex...Rhett has to practically rape her to show her how he feels....
i thought i would hate this movie cuz it glorified the confedrate soliders who were just as gulity as the union soliders and gave a very narrow view on slavery but its really good movie despite its anti tom nature
My God he is sexy! I swear blair and chuck from gossip girl are exactly like these characters! Except their chemistry and acting blows gossip girl's out of the water!
No we don't know each other. I live in Germany and you probably in the US ;)
I guess we both understand Scarlett and why she does what she does but the difference is that you like her and I don't which is quite fine.
I have to read the book again. It's almost 12 years since I read it the last time and this time I'm going to read it in English :) Translations are crap
Basque was spoken in all of Europe as a common language, because almost all the population of Europe had migrated from the Sahara when the formerly productive land became a desert.New cults from Anatolia, all of them promoted male domination. Priests were sent to all over Europe with orders to destroy the ancient religion of the Goddess, create nations, and invent new languages for each new nation.Every language had to be based on the basque language because there was no other from which to work
lol they do have "something" in common... they both are media, they both involve relationships..etc. you could have said "don't compare.." and yeah.. that show is cheaper than this movie.. buh damn u dun have to be so mean ><
No the boys today are too busy trying to fit in with today's system and that means the polar opposite of Clark's era.The goods just aren't there anymore.

@Persiansweetcat1 How dare you speak such blasphemous words! Thats like saying you love potatoes but hate french fries! You are just a natural born idiot!
@regulators88 I don't know if I should laugh or call you STUPID for your comment. If you had any idea of literaure you would understand that Scarlett is an antihero. She is the main character but she is not a heroine. There are plenty of such characters in english, german, russian, french, italian literature but how would you know....
just a short list to englighten your mind:
Scarlett O'Hera, Becky Sharp, Kate, Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff, Jay Gatsby, Macbeth, etc.
@Persiansweetcat1 Well, begging your pardon, but who was the one who saved Tara? It sure as heck wasnt Suellen! You did not understand the book. Scarlett did what she did to survive! She was a survivalist. She tricked people and she beat people at their own game! You know nothing!
This is probably going too far for your small peanut sized head, but I do read. More than just Gone With The Wind
And by the way, its Scarlett O'Hara, not O'Hera.
And whats wrong with Earnshaw Heathcliff & Macbeth?
@regulators88 Yes, she had to save Tara and she had to do those things BUT she still is an antihero. If you had read Macbeth and Wuthering Heights you would not ask that question. Ahhhhhh and by the way I am soooo sorry for writing O'Hara with an e since English is my third foreign language....
@Persiansweetcat1 You would understand what every true southerner does if you were a southerner. But apparently your not! What are you, Mexican? European?
@regulators88 Americans and their prejudices... Truly, I feel sorry for you. It does not matter where I was born and where I was raised, I have been to Texas and I know their attitudes AND you can't compare Scarlett with any other southern woman. She is different...
By the way I would not sacrifice my happiness and life for a piece of land, that's just stupid and I love my country.
@Persiansweetcat1 Well its obvious that you arent part Irish either! Irish love their land! Like Gerald O'Hara said, "And to anyone with a drop of Irish blood in them the land they live on is like their mother." Im proud that I have Irish blood running through my veins. And Im proud that Im an American too! Only true southerners would save their land because it means everything to them and the Irish are the same way!
You can't compare Scarlett with others because she is better than all of them!
@regulators88 that's precisely what I meant: childish, subjective, sentimental opinion. You don't understand Scarlett's character at all. Her character goes deeper, she is complicated but all you see is that she loves Tera and 'is better than all of them'.
Being proud of a nationality is stupid. We are all human beings and it does not matter where we live or where we come from. It's more important to live in harmony and respect each other.
@Persiansweetcat1 I find it ironic. I had just listened to on the other hand by Randy Travis and here you write "on the other hand..." Yes I know that about the Irish. but they also fought for their land b/c they love it! That's what Scarlett realized about Tara. She loved the red dirt of Tara, and Tara loved her too. Even if Rhett and Ashley, and everybody in Atlanta didn't love her. Tara would love her, and would always love her. I wish that I could make you understand!
@regulators88 I do understand,it's everything what she got BUT it's still no excuse for what she has done. She is manipulative, eccentric, selfish, she uses people and doesn't care.Scarlett is strong and I like that about her.I hate weak characters in books but when her mother dies she loses s.th very important. She doesn't care about anything. She only wants to be rich and have Ashley. That's what I dislike. At the end she is lonely, everyone has left her and a piece of land can't never replace love
@Persiansweetcat1What you said is true but Scarlett wanted 2 be rich so she would never starve again I know what its like 2 live the way she did when the war was over and Tara was in danger Its hell she swore she would never go hungry again She only thought she wanted Ashley In the bookwhen she runs home after Melly diedshe realizes that she cared nothing 4 Ashleybut she was maddly in love with Rhett but it was too late She probably thought that she would win back Rhetts love by going to Tara
@regulators88 and here is the irony that I love about this book: she finally realises who is important to her but it's too late. That's why this book is so briliant.
Being good and honsest to people and to yourself is something very difficult and it's something Scarlett never achieves. She is busy making money and using people for her aims that she forgets what is really important in life.
@Persiansweetcat1 Do I know you? Because you are saying things that I say & it's kinda scaring me! Anyways I understand that Scarlett is conceited, so to speak, & I know that she doesnt "care" about Rhett until its too late. Im actually reading the book again Im at the part where she runs into Kennedy in Lanta after the war And Scarlett just told him that Suellen was going to mary one of the Fontaine boys If I'm not mistaken But I believe that we are beginning to come to a conclusion. Dont you?
"It wouldn't have won an Oscar if it weren't realistic or too politically correct."
Being "realistic" is one thing, Mitchell incorporating unneeded, pointless, and blatantly racist scenarios such as the Tony Fontaine incident, (that didn't make it into the movie btw) in her book in order to push her racist political ideology off onto her gullible readers is another. Virtually every 'likable' character in Gone With The Wind, including the blacks, were vocal white supremacists.
pity they do not remain together even when it played two of them: (.. New Scarlett is not good :(:(... I cried when he left in the second part and already, this movie disappointed me ://... returned to: )
I've never understood what Scarlett found in this boring Ashley.
Rhett is so perfect for her and he really loves her.
She's such a dumbass sometimes... Nothing against her. I really like her strong character but she really should have choosen Rhett - from the beginning on! :)
@Atomicslid139 This movie takes place in the south during slavery times, it's a period piece and obviously it wouldn't have won an Oscar if it weren't realistic or too politically correct.
@kimberlymarie21990 So that makes it ok for people to venerate and idolize racist characters like Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara? Let's not forget that Scarlett and her Klan-member husband, Frank Kennedy, eagerly aided Tony Fontaine in escaping arrest for murdering - (cutting into ribbons to be precise) - one of those dastardly "darkies" for making advances toward a white woman. And Rhett - that sweet Southern gentleman was set to hang for murdering an "uppity nigger" himself.
@saberbazer I can see where a loser like you would want to go back to a time where, through no virtue or intelligence of your own, you could rule over half of the population. Luckily, things don't work like that anymore and never, ever will again. May as well get used to it.
Not to rain on anyone's romantic parade (this is my favorite movie), but I read an interview once where Vivien couldn't hardly stand to be so close to Clarke due to his severe halitosis, which caused major dragon breath. A mint, Rhett?
oh, please....don't start with that bullshit. You girls love to compare the guys of today to the chivalrous guys of the past but the truth is, you cynical and low class women of today went down in quality too and don't respond to chivalry anymore. If a guy came up to you all gentleman like, you'd probably laugh at him. Girls and women today like the aggressive, bad-boy image, and you know it.
@AlexBrasil123123 Well, all you said about women today being "cynical and low class and not responding to chivalry anymore" is pretty biased and unfair. In terms of respect and chivalry, I have to say everything is more loose now than ever, much easier and shallow. In our grandparents era, a man had to court a woman to go out with her. People think of that now and laugh, unfortunately.
lmao, what the hell do you think I base my generalizations on? I'm a grown man you dumb little girl and have dated lots of girls and women so far in my life. Sure, not every women I've ever known was selfish, shallow, and low class, but 95% of them are. When you have a percentage that high, then a person is justified to pretty much lump them all together as being a certain way.
You're probably just mad at what I said because I hit a personal nerve. You're probably one of those girls.
@LostBabe I'm 11, & I just saw this film on Netflix a week or two ago. I actually loved it, definitely one of the most defining & influential films of the Hollywood Golden Age.
@saberbazer This is a movie about people who treat each other like sh!t and practically hate each other. WHY would you want the whole world to go back to being like that?
@TFYFWYA you obviously didnt get this movie at all.. but then again i suppose the movie wasnt aimed at the deteriorating IQ levels of today's audiences in the first place..
@bardock2525 I know what you mean. I often find myself pining for the good ol' days days when rich, white Southerners could lounge around on their ostentatious porches listening to pathetic, delusional girls like Scarlett O'Hara whine about their broken nails and dirtied pinafores while black people fulfilled "their" duties as beasts of burden in the cotton fields.
I've wanted to see this movie since I was a child, It didn't dissapointed me at all! I like Clark Gable since "It Happened One Night" but in this movie he blew my mind!
Vivien Leigh was astonishing too,a perfect Scarlett :)

I love this movie although I hated the character of Scarlett I love the performence of Vivien Leigh.
Hollywood in the 40s and 50s had just the best actors ever... Today half of Hollywood is worthless...

@Persiansweetcat1 How can you love this movie but hate Scarlett? She's like, the central character..
raspberrymaven 11 months ago
@raspberrymaven yes I know but she is such an antihero and I hate her selfish, eccentric, arrogant character. I love Rhet Butler though ;)
Persiansweetcat1 11 months ago
@Persiansweetcat1 How dare you speak such blasphemous words! Thats like saying you love potatoes but hate french fries! You are just a natural born idiot!
regulators88 10 months ago
@regulators88 I don't know if I should laugh or call you STUPID for your comment. If you had any idea of literaure you would understand that Scarlett is an antihero. She is the main character but she is not a heroine. There are plenty of such characters in english, german, russian, french, italian literature but how would you know....
just a short list to englighten your mind:
Scarlett O'Hera, Becky Sharp, Kate, Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff, Jay Gatsby, Macbeth, etc.
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago 2
@Persiansweetcat1 Well, begging your pardon, but who was the one who saved Tara? It sure as heck wasnt Suellen! You did not understand the book. Scarlett did what she did to survive! She was a survivalist. She tricked people and she beat people at their own game! You know nothing!
This is probably going too far for your small peanut sized head, but I do read. More than just Gone With The Wind
And by the way, its Scarlett O'Hara, not O'Hera.
And whats wrong with Earnshaw Heathcliff & Macbeth?
regulators88 10 months ago
@regulators88 Yes, she had to save Tara and she had to do those things BUT she still is an antihero. If you had read Macbeth and Wuthering Heights you would not ask that question. Ahhhhhh and by the way I am soooo sorry for writing O'Hara with an e since English is my third foreign language....
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago
@Persiansweetcat1 You would understand what every true southerner does if you were a southerner. But apparently your not! What are you, Mexican? European?
regulators88 10 months ago
@regulators88 Americans and their prejudices... Truly, I feel sorry for you. It does not matter where I was born and where I was raised, I have been to Texas and I know their attitudes AND you can't compare Scarlett with any other southern woman. She is different...
By the way I would not sacrifice my happiness and life for a piece of land, that's just stupid and I love my country.
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago
@Persiansweetcat1 Well its obvious that you arent part Irish either! Irish love their land! Like Gerald O'Hara said, "And to anyone with a drop of Irish blood in them the land they live on is like their mother." Im proud that I have Irish blood running through my veins. And Im proud that Im an American too! Only true southerners would save their land because it means everything to them and the Irish are the same way!
You can't compare Scarlett with others because she is better than all of them!
regulators88 10 months ago
@regulators88 that's precisely what I meant: childish, subjective, sentimental opinion. You don't understand Scarlett's character at all. Her character goes deeper, she is complicated but all you see is that she loves Tera and 'is better than all of them'.
Being proud of a nationality is stupid. We are all human beings and it does not matter where we live or where we come from. It's more important to live in harmony and respect each other.
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago
@regulators88 but on the other hand irish people had to fight for their land since they were oppressed by english government for almost 1000 years...
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago
@Persiansweetcat1 I find it ironic. I had just listened to on the other hand by Randy Travis and here you write "on the other hand..." Yes I know that about the Irish. but they also fought for their land b/c they love it! That's what Scarlett realized about Tara. She loved the red dirt of Tara, and Tara loved her too. Even if Rhett and Ashley, and everybody in Atlanta didn't love her. Tara would love her, and would always love her. I wish that I could make you understand!
regulators88 10 months ago
@regulators88 I do understand,it's everything what she got BUT it's still no excuse for what she has done. She is manipulative, eccentric, selfish, she uses people and doesn't care.Scarlett is strong and I like that about her.I hate weak characters in books but when her mother dies she loses s.th very important. She doesn't care about anything. She only wants to be rich and have Ashley. That's what I dislike. At the end she is lonely, everyone has left her and a piece of land can't never replace love
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago
@Persiansweetcat1What you said is true but Scarlett wanted 2 be rich so she would never starve again I know what its like 2 live the way she did when the war was over and Tara was in danger Its hell she swore she would never go hungry again She only thought she wanted Ashley In the bookwhen she runs home after Melly diedshe realizes that she cared nothing 4 Ashleybut she was maddly in love with Rhett but it was too late She probably thought that she would win back Rhetts love by going to Tara
regulators88 10 months ago
@regulators88 and here is the irony that I love about this book: she finally realises who is important to her but it's too late. That's why this book is so briliant.
Being good and honsest to people and to yourself is something very difficult and it's something Scarlett never achieves. She is busy making money and using people for her aims that she forgets what is really important in life.
Persiansweetcat1 10 months ago

Rhett is so perfect for her and he really loves her.
She's such a dumbass sometimes... Nothing against her. I really like her strong character but she really should have choosen Rhett - from the beginning on! :)

Not to rain on anyone's romantic parade (this is my favorite movie), but I read an interview once where Vivien couldn't hardly stand to be so close to Clarke due to his severe halitosis, which caused major dragon breath. A mint, Rhett?

What an era, and Clark Gable was perfection. These boys now need to watch this and learn some tips from him, if they want to become men. xD
LostBabe 1 year ago 164
@LostBabe
oh, please....don't start with that bullshit.
AlexBrasil123123 1 year ago
@AlexBrasil123123 Well, all you said about women today being "cynical and low class and not responding to chivalry anymore" is pretty biased and unfair. In terms of respect and chivalry, I have to say everything is more loose now than ever, much easier and shallow. In our grandparents era, a man had to court a woman to go out with her. People think of that now and laugh, unfortunately.
LostBabe 1 year ago 5
@AlexBrasil123123 wow, talk about absurd generalizations. You're obviously clueless about women, this comment shows it.

@AlexBrasil123123 again, clueless. When you grow up and gain more experience, your opinion will change.
lpycb42 1 year ago
@lpycb42
lmao, what the hell do you think I base my generalizations on? I'm a grown man you dumb little girl and have dated lots of girls and women so far in my life. Sure, not every women I've ever known was selfish, shallow, and low class, but 95% of them are. When you have a percentage that high, then a person is justified to pretty much lump them all together as being a certain way.
You're probably just mad at what I said because I hit a personal nerve. You're probably one of those girls.

@saberbazer This is a movie about people who treat each other like sh!t and practically hate each other. WHY would you want the whole world to go back to being like that?
TFYFWYA 1 year ago
@TFYFWYA you obviously didnt get this movie at all.. but then again i suppose the movie wasnt aimed at the deteriorating IQ levels of today's audiences in the first place..
bardock2525 1 year ago
@bardock2525 I did get it. I got it completely. And hated it.
TFYFWYA 1 year ago
@bardock2525 I know what you mean. I often find myself pining for the good ol' days days when rich, white Southerners could lounge around on their ostentatious porches listening to pathetic, delusional girls like Scarlett O'Hara whine about their broken nails and dirtied pinafores while black people fulfilled "their" duties as beasts of burden in the cotton fields.
*sigh*..
