Looking at the same thing but form a little different perspective a part of the brain dedicates to give the precise distance, by the triangle formed with both eyes pointing the same thing. Do this exercise cover an eye and try to catch a pencil and you will see that both eyes do better that's because what i talking about. Of course one eye can do many both better.

ya but the targeting dot is going to be in the same spot on the hud regardless of which eye is being tracked

Targeting is to take some action so you need not only the direction given by the dot also the distance between, and not only for the first object but for others in the place. If the idea is to get targeting only with vision you will need two eyes or to do like birds change the position of the perspective with some moves of the head to get the distance between.

was a bit boring, but does have some good use, perhaps the camera/computer could output some signals, either radiowaves, etc., that indicate what is being looked at, and then devices/locations being looked at could have radio recivers that pick up the signal up and make it do something.
