@leviticusapplebottom I agree. This is meant to be funny and campy. It definitely draws on drag acts and the outrageous, oversized performances typical of those. And, yeah, why don't all the people critiquing the weirdness of modern hipsters look back at the New York scene in the late 1970s? Or the 1960s?
@leviticusapplebottom agreed the hippy moron Fred Neil's version is nearly as shitty. there has always been condescending bastards screwing up the music of people who are better than them
@leviticusapplebottom The problem I have with this is the way DB identifies himself with other artists instead of being original. @homiedude333 or maybe he just liked elizabeth and figured hey i would love to do a cover, and was like hey why don't i do it in the same style as her, as some form of tribute, or maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyybeeeeeeee just maybe he enjoys doing it and doesnt give a shit what close minded music snobs like you think, its music mate, not everything is everyones cup of tea, but just cause you can string together a sentence in your smart manner, doesn't mean you can say he's shit, cause he's not.

@poltergiest11 the song is not racist Banhart sings it like a racist. Bob Zimmerman at least

I forgot how terrible this shit was. I can't believe any one actually listens to this garbage... Wait... Hipsters like this guy... it all makes sense now.
I appreciate what this artist is trying for here, it just felt a little force this time around. He's very emotional and dramatic, perhaps he's feeling a bit self conscience as happens to those who stand on the threshold of something real for a change. Anyway I liked his rendition of Elizabeth Cotten's song Shake Sugaree.
@ChicagoCubs1060 hes expressing himself watch Lotus Flower by radiohead thom yorke does the same thing. its feeling it out and grooving to it, and who cares if its weird man, we're all weird get used to it...sorry dont mean to sound like a dick, but acceptance is all that humanity needs.

Hi everyone, If you like this kind of music then you should check out my new song by clicking on my username under this comment, any feedback would be much appreciated, thanks.
The song is incredibly sad, I don't think even Elizabeth's is "joy"-ful, but rather sung joyously. I think depression-era folk is often sung to a happy tune to contrast the dark content- usually heaven, death, poverty and the like; and because a rockin' tune always puts people in a good mood despite the aforementioned.
I <3 Elizabeth Cotten, and this is sad. Devendra is not very good at playing instruments nor is he good at doing a performance that actually seems honest.
I'm just gonna have to leave you kids again. @YechezkaelMacavi feel free to like whatever you like, but let other people see the beauty in this. you're really being as much of an asshole as the people you criticize when you start blabbering about existentialism. so just relax and spend your time on the things you think are beautiful, instead of trying to shoot down something someone else loves just so you seem like a cool kid.
@kaylamac9121 it's not about how he looks as I said, " if I clauses my eyes..." what you and people like you don't get is that on your quest in existentialism you mistake imitation like this for "art" art if there is such a thing is the old woman who originally wrote and performed the song. White people are always fascinated by this kind of crap wrapped in tin foil.
@YechezkaelMacavi Uhh wow.. Just looked at some of ur favorite videos to see what kind of music u consider art... I feel no more need to argue, hahahahahaha, I win..
He's a great character actor/medium if I would have closed my eyes I would have thought it was an old black woman instead of captain jack on crack. These people think they're end or they're quest for existentialism is to deny there own existence. He probably thinks he's on the cusp of human evolution. Just call it what it is dude your playing pretend! Art? Haha, my kids finger paintings on his lunch tray show more promise! If it wasn't for the degradation of society this gu
@YechezkaelMacavi- I really wish u could see how beautiful this is, regardless of how he looks when he performs.. He is amazing! And Im sure I would be far more entertained at one of his shows then staring and a child finger paintings......
I know it's all about the music and all. And that's why I listen to him, because I love his music. But I have to say, he is an undoubtably gorgeous existence.
@bruthaphil... I have always thought it was Fred Neil who wrote Shake Sugaree, he was always known as a blues writer. Do you know who wrote "The Bag I"m in", also a Fred Neil Hit.
Bye the way, I think D Banhart needs to keep his day job!!! The guy sucks!

Dude, "she died" in 1987 at 92 years old. Don't really see the relevance in pointing that out on stage, but whatever. Way to bring the drama!
warminghut 1 year ago
@warminghut I think he was just pointing out that she's dead now, as opposed to trying to be like 'oh she died, crazyiness'.
thefuckheadsgalore 1 year ago
@warminghut he's just trying to prove how in touch with all things ever and how he feels everything on the planet so strongly. dude's a dick.
