  • @JTBassist09 please allow my drum cover to be a video respose to this video! :) love this song.

  • "Umbra" means shadow in my language.Don't know if it's related but just sayn'...

  • @vo0sto0 I believe the umbra and penumbra are separate parts of the shadows cast by earth and moon during eclipses...

  • @HammerNHook actually, umbra refers to the darkest part of a shadow, penumbra and antumbra refer to different parts of a shadow, and yes, all three are used in eclipse terminology.

  • Damn this is awesome shit. Australians kick ass at music!

Airbourne, ACDC, Wolfmother, Butterfly Effect and now this. Badassery.

  • @HammerNHook AC/DC and Airbourne suck

  • this song is so dark and mysterious, it's sophistication far surpasses that of anything he's done with Birds of Tokyo

  • Does anyone know any music that sounds like the first minute of this song? its.. amazing.. so peaceful... words can't describe it. i just need more songs in this tune.

  • @Ozblu3y Try looking at some Post Rock. Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Sleepmakeswaves, Hammock and This will destroy you are some you should definitely try. :)

  • @Ozblu3y yeah its amazing

  • @Ozblu3y

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Try 26 minutes of bliss :)

  • i'm so glad i bought this album :P its genious

  • @12321Walrus

Thanks for the clarification, I'm so glad you were here to let us all know. I'm also really glad you were clever enough to realise this and let us all know. Thank you sooooo much.

  • Nothing like a bit of Karnivool, TesseracT, Periphery, and Protest the Hero to brighten up my day. Technical bands ftw.

  • Amazing.... Just amazing.... Im a really good drummer and this took me a whole week to learn just the OPENING beat @ 2 to 3 hours a day. These guys are simply amazing.

  • @boomtnt1 if you were a really good drummer you wouldn't have said that you are a really good drummer, and would have got it first try. it's not that hard. check out the end of change or some of the fills in new day. that really shows the chops of Steve Judd

  • @JTbassist09 well it doesnt SOUND hard... but once you narrow it down to the bits and pieces of what the beat really is then you will know its much more complicated than you think

  • @JTbassist09 Goddard recorded every drumtrack for Themata, except Lifelike. Gotta admit, both are insane drummers. And now Goddard's the lead guitarist. Wow.

  • @JTbassist09

Lol. You definitely have a point. I like the drums in Cote, the way they seemingly transition in the main verses. Also Boomtnt should check out Set Fire to the Hive. The sticking in that is pretty intense :)

  • @boomtnt1 The point is when you write a song you play what sounds right. Copying a complex drum beat like this is much harder than writing it yourself. I doubt the drum beat is exactly the same each time he plays it. The 3-note guitar riff at the start and end of this song is far better than any drum beat - genius. Just a shame it doesn't feature more often in the rest of the song - i can't help feeling there's tons of missed potential in this track.

  • @gsuk28 its actually a bass riff. its pretty awesome i agree

  • Now THIS is music! Full of dynamics going from a soft whisper to a roundhouse kick upside your head. Insanely complex with several crazy time signature changes which are so seamless that they really don't sound strange or out of place. It's not until you really listen and try to figure out what the heck they are doing that you realize all the crazy mind games they are playing with you. Every riff and beat is all about TASTE, MELODY, and GROOVE, not speed. I will it say again... THIS IS MUSIC!!

  • @Tekkerue I'm really digging this new band called Delusion Twin at the moment.. I think they have all of those things you like about Karnivool, so give them a listen - they've got a fuck ton of promise

  • @Tekkerue your obsurd

  • @Tekkerue and I will agree by saying ''THIS IS MUSIC!!'' :)

  • Yo has anyone else checked out JTBassist09's music in the description? its really good actually.

  • @clapla thanks man

  • This is Karnivool. Not Tool.

So shut up with the comparisons, yeah?

  • For Real.

  • Holy fuck.

  • Sound Awake is a fuckin great album!

  • JTbassit. "From my prospective", I really like progressive meldoic and psychdelic metal. I like the bands that mix it up ie. Karnivool. I have heard some "Porcupine tree" songs, but never owned an album, so it hard to rate them overall. You know it seems, after a while, owning an album the music becomes more clear sonically, similar to when one notices some new object in a painting. Porcupine Tree seems more "shoe gaze" than metal to me. What do y'all think?

  • @yogeesunshine They definitely have their metal moments but I'd say PT float around Prog/psychedelic/soft rock more-so than metal.

  • Absolutely sublime. The fade out at the end just completes its beauty. The real accomplishment here is the lyrics though...profound. Haven't' felt this way since I heard Schism by Tool all those years ago.

"And just when I think I've worked it out

These pieces move and I'm back to the start"

  • this must be the most brilliant and beautiful rock song ever made, the music is sublime and the lyrics are beautiful, i love the changes along the whole song hard and melodic, this must be the best band ever from australia

  • fuck yes <3

  • Love Porcupine Tree, coming to Albuquerque with Coheed and Cambria. I 'm up for it! Just learning about Karnivool. Like them so far.

  • karnivool didnt made a new album? when ? :(

  • my favourite part is from 4:40 to the end :D

actually, the whole song is amazing

  • this song has got me thru tough and depressing times, hand downs my favortie song of all time

  • There is no way to compare tool and this. Completely different music, COMPLETELY different. What the fuck are people doing even trying. Just cause it has distorted guitar and odd time signatures? I like them both but far too different to compare.

  • @GrimAxis the themata cd had more elements. i agree though, Karnivool and Tool have different timbre's to them... i think tool is more contemplative and karnivool is more like a story. different textures to their sounds and attitudes. i would say they could do a show together though - a damn good one.

  • Amazing song... I love it :)

  • I'll sleep till its over and I'm sober again

  • Comment removed

  • This band is amazing, they have opened up my mind far more than it all ready was.

  • damn this band is really sick. never even heard of them before

  • to everyone comparing this band to tool. the only thing that is factually comparable is the last three letters of both bands are definitely the same. prog is prog and the styles are similar yes. that should go without saying. i will say this. if someone were to ask me, whom had never heard this band before, who they sounded like, honestly i would mostly likely reference tool as one of those bands but with a big resounding BUT...anybody that talks about music in absolutes has missed the point

  • You can't say one singer is better than the other... their voices actually sound absolutely different. But at least they have distinct voices unlike every voice you hear in the charts that sounds like the same piece of auto-tuned bullshit all the way down the list...

  • This song really reminds me of really technical stuff like some of Mylie Cyrus' hits, and of course the extremely talented Justin beiber

  • @Rocknroller5555

    Effin seconded.

  • I think of Dream Theater as well, and not Tool :) It is more ... well, the mood is Tool, but in my mind I can relate Karnivool to DT better....and this is the first time I hear this band, LIKE IT!

  • C'mon people. Shut up about them being influenced by Tool. I mean Tool is influenced by King Crimson, but do you say that on Tool videos or songs? Grow up and realize that all of the music you listen to was at sometime influeneced by another artist. Art in general has been this way since the beginning of time you jackasses. Be glad it's still around and that there are still good artists like this.

  • @BigTymerPimp there was a time when the first musicians were influenced by tigers growling. those were the days.

  • lots of people keep talking about TOOL. if you want to compare listen to some early DREAM THEATRE. Although to compare is futile since there are only so many combinations of notes and chords and all of them it would be safe to say were done by the early nineties. listen, enjoy and get over it.

  • this is nothing like tool!!!!!.....this cant compare to maynards divine voice!

  • @obscuredphoenix6

    You've got to be joking.

Kenny is and will always be a better singer than Maynard.

  • @Betacra ummmm....I will agree to disagree. Thats a sharp statement

  • @guitarded82

Feel free to disagree, but Maynard James Keenan is overrated as a singer, he's by no means bad (I think he's great) but Ian Kenny can absolutely destroy him in almost every regard.

  • @Betacra Errrr no.

  • @zone1480

For christ sake, Maynard Defense Force activated...

It's my opinion, deal with it.

  • @Betacra I think Ian has a better range but Maynard is a genius through and through. Apples and oranges.

  • kenny really does have one of the cleanest, purest voices in the rock world

  • This song is amazing.

  • Great song from a great Band =D

  • thank you for bands like this

  • and yeah i like porcupine tree too :P

  • <3 this song!

  • type tool then u faries.karnivool is inspired by there krazy brains not another band.unique and rare with only 2 cds.

  • Amazing band!!!!!

  • this song = all your attempted comments put together.

  • you can obviously tell that the riff at 1:58 is influenced by the tool song lateralus.

  • @SoGesus are you sure you mean lateralus..cause i dont hear any comparison there

  • I cant help but loose a little love for tool everytime i hear another fuckwit speak about them on these karnivool vids.

  • I've honestly never heard any Tool songs what so ever and I don't think I will ever have to....

  • @RivaStyx No you pretty much have to listen to Tool.

  • yeh, no listen to tool, it will be the best decison you ever made

  • This shit is crazy!

  • To all wondering about the title, in case someone hasn't said anything already, Umbra is Latin for Shadow. :-)

  • It would seem I have three people to hunt down and kick in the nuts. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work I go. :D

  • you people that think karnivool sounds like tool are the most close minded individuals to exist. maybe im drunk right now but comparing music is like telling BP they are going green this year.. come on you tards. lets all grow up and wake up now....

  • @littlecooney13 Not really. It's very obvious they are influenced by Tool, to deny that is just silly. That said, lets not get hung up on who they sound like as they are a different band and should be appreciated as such. They aren't the new version or replacement of Tool, they just are influenced by them. Everyone does it.

  • @RossWildish i completely agree and thats why i think people shouldn't compare. its bullshit because we all learn from one another. people just need to learn to mellow out and enjoy every second of this. this world would be a better place if we all learned to do so.

  • OMFG... Now you imagined another new Tool! How many have they been already?? 10? 20? 1000?

  • very good song, something about his voice kinda pisses me off though. idk what it is.

  • Not sure I can name any other song which conveys depression quite as beautifully and accurately as this. Even the title hints at it in a subtle, mature way, so as not to to draw attention to the true feelings of the song (as a depressed person would do if they were writing this -- maybe I'm looking too far into it).

I'd also like to give the chorus a special mention; amazing songwriting! This song reminds me of my brother who is a long-term sufferer of depression and alcoholism.

  • Sound Awake has to be their best album so far.

    Definitely better .

  • How has no one commented on the chords at 1:05???

Probably the most desolate, beautiful chords i've ever heard. Fuck. They literally bring me to tears.

  • @toberush totally agree bro....listen to that over and over

  • @toberush the song does it. the song... does it... the whole song.

  • @toberush I picked out the notes the other day on guitar. its only two strings but its so smooth and fun to play and expand on!

  • @MaxxHaste91 Isnt it just Open E, Second fret on A, then third fret E, third fret A? Something like that. I figured it out in about 15 seconds

  • @toberush I dont think those are chords. Just single notes with lots of distortion

  • yeah i love porcupine tree. and what i've seen of karnivool is pretty damn good, though in a heavier sort of way like tool or riverside.

I like karnivool for their precise heaviness.

also, i found out about them in seeing them as PT's opening act... it was a good combination for sure.

  • Comment removed

  • they opened for porcupine tree two nights ago in san francisco and this was the first time i heard them and they are awesome!

  • My German Shepherd is called Umbra it means Shadow ;)

  • why is it the title 'umbra'?

  • @Uffable It's titled "Umbra" as the song has a rather dark meaning behind it - and an Umbra is a part of a shadow, the darkest part in fact.

    This song is a masterpiece.

  • "Just when I think I've worked it out these pieces move and I'm back to the start"

    fascinating!!!!!

  • this totally blows my mind!!!

  • I love porcupine tree. In absentia is perfect! karnivool also brilliant. now loving birds of tokyo also.

  • "shadow"

  • amazing musicianship.

  • never heard of Karnivool, i wonder why? he's amaizing!

  • the intro and outro really add an epic "at a crossroads" feel to the song. i fuckin love that shit. AWSOME. Flat out. Incredible work.

  • One of the greatest songs ever, hands down, no argument, end of story, period.

  • i just love the name, (reminds me of Oblivion) especially after i looked up the meaning.

  • Why is everyone mentioning other bands? Can't you just enjoy the music for what it is rather than trying to validate it by comparing it against something else? Nobody is asking you to change your favorite band - just sit down, shut up and enjoy the fucking music.

  • i remember when i first heard this drum groove, i hated it, but now i love it. the syncopation is ridiculous. how could someone come up with a groove so messed up, but tasteful?

  • @underscoreisnotvalid well, i think karnivool play with the most bizarre time signatures, that regularly change. The first groove on the drums in this song is legendary, and very original. I really love it!

  • @aidenskater94 yeah man youre right, they come up with crazy time signatures and odd chords and rhythms, but done well, and really musically, this is what separates karnivool from other prog/alternative/ groove metal bands

  • @aidenskater94 Yeah, im a drummer myself, and the timing is so strange, but it works well with the guitars. And i love playing syncopated music, so im sure ill be learning some of these songs soon :)

  • @aidenskater94 Try Meshuggah for "bizarre time signature".

  • @BisayaBoii Naw peripheiry is the major oddball

  • @aidenskater94 ahhhh I agree, awesome time signatures, but they use some really different chords too that many people dare to play. Awesome, unique band

  • @underscoreisnotvalid Hit up Chris Pennie if you like this guy's drumming!

  • @oiamthelordo yeah man i have, i adore chris pennie. calculating infinity by dillinger is one of my fav albums of all time

  • no ive listened to tool and they are amazing too. i give both bands incredible credit and i love them both. great respect for them.

  • i dont think littlecooney has even listened to tool.

atleast not lateralus or 10,000 days.

  • @danzig5 the ultimate tool album will always be aenima anyway. None of which you've mentioned.

  • @zone1480 thats because I wasn't talking about which album was best, I was simply saying that TOOL has alot of soulful and pulifting songs such as wings for marie, intention, right in two. I believe undertow was the best anyways.

  • I love the bass lines. Their compositions ar both different and original

  • now this is "music".

  • i have no money but im tempted to beg on the streets just so i can go out and get this album even though i have it downloaded.

  • Best Aussie band ever

  • immeasurably close to being good. the margin is nearly imperceptible. Tool combined with Mars Volta, Still, the younger audience will grow out of the hybrid bands.

  • reminds me a little of deftones. I'm not comparing, but I love it when bands have alot of feel in their songs! Thats what music is about isnt it? :)

  • way to soulful and uplifting to compare to tool.

  • I love the THICKNESS from 4:55 - 5:33. Big fat fuzz bass, 2-3 vocals, weird chords, hard hitting drums, complex weaving guitars. Just epic.

  • Got this cd and was getting into it, but on this track is started to skip. I got a second copy and it did the same thing on this song. My player was cleaned and all other disc work. I never got to hear past the start of track 5. Sounded good though.

  • I just cant express the emotions I get when I listen to Karnivool... I am more than sure that this is my all time favorite band and it is going to stay that way. Sad that change them coming to Estonia is so small. I LOVE THIS BAND... Karnivool is the best for me.

  • For Shizzle lol :P yeah i love both the birds and karnivool and i am soo proud to be liing where there band first formed

  • I feel the same man! I'm living in Holland, they aren't visiting us this tour. I'm going to Germany the 6th of march with my friends to see them there.

  • @Sumsar91- I totally agree with you man...karnivool is my all time favourite after just 2 albums and 5 days! we can be biggest fan buddies! :D

  • This is prolly my favorite song on the album. I really like songs that have really good atmosphere. . . if that makes sense.

  • @Conjon8811--yeah man..i hear ya...these guys are awesome...i know what you mean :)

  • This is the first time I have ever listened to Karnivool. Coincidentally my Channel name is Umbra52. I'm going to go and buy this album. I hope this band turns out to be another revolution in my musical awareness

  • @UmbRa52... it is so good, changed my life.. haha

  • 3:57-4:58 is bliss.

  • lol they're nothing like tool...

only thing that is similar to tool are the 8 minute songs and SOMETIMES the guitar work... but they have a completly DIFFERENT sound, you can't even compare the 2 bands.

  • And those 8-minute songs only came into play on this album.

  • hmmm, I can see the voice being mistaken at the beginning there. and similarities, are not saying they are a lot like tool, just that you can here things they have in common. This is actually not generic, it sounds pretty awesome.

  • I cannot get enough of this song! Karnivool's best by far. Songs like this do them proud. This has got to be one of my favourite songs.

  • I gotta say these guys are like tool definitly dont compare to them tho

  • Third best song on the album in my opinion, after Deadman and Change. So heartrendingly beautiful, complex, and amazing in execution. These guys sure know how to write a song.

  • MESSAGE FOR EVERYONE, THIS IS SOUNDING LIKE THE NEW TOOL, in my opinion tool was my dreamband but know i learned about this guys, really these guys are more mysterical

  • "mysterical" nice lol, but yeah, I love the "spacey" sound of Karnivool. I didn't like the new album that much at first but now I absolutely love it! It's great from start to finish and it does have an awesome prog rock sound.

  • yeah it really had to grow on me but now i think its so beautiful, especially this song. and the drum beat at the beginning just rapes my mind haha

  • @DrummingRyan- aha! i know right? XD its quite simple though..just takes practice...lotta ghost notes on the snare...

  • There are no "new Tool". Tool is Tool and Karnivool is Karnivool.

  • AGREED

  • @Ollvid You're right, but there's definatly a big influence of Tool in this band.

  • @Ollvid there are similarities. nothing wrong with that. but yeah they are not replacent of TOOL :)

  • @Ollvid agreed :)

  • probs because of one tiny little thing. They play in the same genre. Just throwing it out there.

  • that is true

  • who r u and why r u commenting on all these vids and pushing breaking benjifag

  • fuck off douchebag,

  • Karnivool and Dredg at the same time...would be like heaven. Heaven except Tool ^^

  • Best Karnivool song to date. They just keep getting better!

  • This is one my fave songs from Karnivool C:

  • Very, very talented band.

  • not sure if youd like it.. guess its kinda similar but tool has alot of odd time signatures

  • the only similarity these guys have to tool is the organic clean riffs, driving bass, and nice use of the toms. i see the similarity people are talking about, but i wouldn´t for the life of me compare them.

  • this was one of the best songs i saw performed live when i saw them in June, such a great atmosphere, the sound was unreal!! A good drinking chorus :)

  • favorite track off this album!!

  • Yeah... this is my personal favourite off the album.

    Beautiful, amazing track.

  • I love the lyrics in this song, I'm not completely sure what its about but I think it's very well thought out. The music is just well, probably one of my favorite grooves of the year. I can't stand simple rhythms and this does not qualify as a simple beat. Someone point me to more bands today with the odd time signatures please!

  • Meshuggah, but that's more brutal... it's almost Death Metal. Very complicated though. Check out Future Breed Machine and perhaps New Millenium Cyanide Christ.

  • Ah, Meshuggah, I enjoy some death metal, just not the vocals in most cases. I like a few of their grooves, and yes they are very talented in the rhythm department! Thank you for replying to my comment, I appreciate the help!

  • Fair to Midland strikes thaty delicate balance between metal and prog very well in my opinion. Check them out. Also check out Dredg, they're another complex band.

  • the mars volta

  • Porcupine trees new album the incident.

  • It's so cool <3

  • man that is a bad ass drum beat

  • Unreal album

  • maddest song
