YES. For example - The movie "Midnight Express" was banned in Turkey. You could not get it. The Turks are VERY sensitive when it comes to National Pride.

The Turkish Military took over in the 70s and had power for a while. They strictly censored what came into the country.

This very bad rip off of The Exorcist is typical of the second hand entertainment that the Turks had in the 70s early 80s.

Remember that the Turks invaded Cyprus in 75. They were condemned by the International Community.

I also think that the form religion was used in the original movie (Islam at the beginning when the devil comes up and the churchman at the as the good who fights evil) is a reason why they remade in that time. But of course there were surely also financal aspects.

This is not a shot by shot remake as some say. Many elements are taken from the novel that were not in the original movie: the girl doing poorly in math, the funeral of tegrul's mother, the girl asking why God allows people to die, the demon's comment "this time you'll lose", the old guy's comment that the demon's target is us and not the posessed. Many others. Someone involved in the production read the book.
