awesome liver version of this song.Did it come out in 1978 or 1979? I forget but it is a great song and this is a great live performance of this song!!!
Great to see this, especially after watching G.E Smith and the tribute to T-bone on Daryl's House recently. The years have passed but they still spin their magic. Check out "In The Night" from that episode with G.E.Smith singing and puts in a little adlib for his missing friend.
The original mixing in 1980s ( may be 83, 84) is very good. But may be copyright matter, I can't find a dvd now. (I watched the original in tape from an LD is still good.)
wait a minute, actually it started in his touring years with Bob Dylan (using Teles only) but He's been using one since the beginning no matter what other guitars he uses He also is really into Les Paul juniors and things like that. Es-335..... all guitars he used in those days too!
the only thing that sucks is that this concert was mixed HORRIBLE! too trebly and thin compared to the Rock n soul live concert from Montreal. Had better mix this would be mind blowing!
I am 21 years old and I am obsessed with Hall and Oates... all my friends laugh at me, but I don't care. These guys are AMAZING!!!! I hope I get to see them in concert someday.
@lifeissankofa Good for you!! When it comes to muusic, it's good to buck the trend, even with friends. Philly blue-eyed soul like Daryl and John have put out for close to 40 years is a passionate, deeply heartful music which transcends age. It shows you have a keen ear for great music!!! Being from Philly area, I've loved their sound from mid 70's high school til today. Have your friends check out "Live from Daryl's House" online.
I think I know which one you are talking about cause I have it, it's on a compilation that they have called Rock 'N Soul Part 1 but they don't say when it was recorded; you're best bet is to just pick up the cd. They did kill it in that version.
I have been a huge fan of these guys since their start, I especially love Daryl Hall's solo work. Both of them can write some timeless tunes, this is great!
Hall and Oates were true artist and writers, not the same crap and the need for a studio and a producer to make you sound good. In concert they put on 1 hell of a show , so luck I got the chance to see a classic group!
WTF WTF WTF G.E. Smith is supposed to play a Fender Telecaster. Instead of that he plays a Gibson Les Paul. I have loved that guy because of his love for his Tele. This really dissapointed me :P
woah, chill out, dude. actually for the next song he plays, you guessed it, a creamy blonde telecaster! also he always used a telecaster on stage with them and everywhere, but he does play other guitars.... guse... traba i think it is....
Yeah he's known mostly to use a Tele and the 52 is his favorite, but In these days he also played alot of Gibsons. It was after SNL he started using Teles exclusively alot....
This video features G.E. Smith who got his big break from playing in Dan Hartman's band for Instant Replay and This Is It videos. Thanks for posting this video, it's great.
Rundgren and Hall are both from Philly. They have played together too..there is a version of Rundgren's "I Saw The Light" with Hall and Oates out there in cyberland.
another neat thing about this is that for anyone whom has heard this song a number of times, he does a very unusual thing of just going into the song.. he always did a little intro to the song, and this was one of the rare times he did that
the way Daryl does the end makes me cry -- he is truly gifted and we are sooo blessed to have had him and John bring us such beautiful music through the years ...
also the guitar solo at the end where GE goes over to Daryl... GE has done various versions for every show and his style of blues goes so well with their music.. all those guys created magic on stage and this is a true example of that!
Great song, absolutely one of their best ever! Philly's gift to blue- eyed soul made a great choice in '79 when picking G.E. Smith to replace the brilliant guitarist Caleb Quaye, who now rocks it out for Jesus.
yes he sure was... he really brought the rock n soul to their band! this is a perfect example of that... it's not the same without him... i still love Daryl and John but they had a truly beautiful thing going and i haven't heard anything like it since... other than when i'm jamming out to their tunes.
Oh my Daryl! This has Japanese caption! And has good translation! Thank you for sharing! I cry when I listen this song! Was this msg for Sara? Is he a type of person writing songs through his experience?

by the way, the translation of Japanese subttile is like grade school staff. The lyrics is much deeper and lingering.

G.E. Smith is the name... guitar is HIS game. check out him and Eddie Van Halen together on the show (SNL) from several years back.

Do you recognize the guy at 2:37 3:50 and 3:59 he became the guitarist and leader of the SNL band after his gig with Hall and Oates.

OMG that Gibson sound is so dirrrty. It soars and it's a perfect foil for such a beautiful song, not to mention THAT voice!

I'm looking for a particular live version of this...my father had it on tape (cassette). REALLY good. They killed it on that performance.

I'm pretty sure I know what version you're referring to, Rock 'n Soul Part 1 had a great rendition of the song.

I only would have been about second grade when this was recorded. I remember me and a classmates singing these guy's hits. We got in big trouble.
These guy's sound was cutting edge and the talent was off the charts in every respect.

"...G.E. Smith is supposed to play a Fender Telecaster...'
you're right, it's a little odd not seeing GE S without a Tele. While it's true he does play other guitars, 95% of the time he's wearing a Tele
