  • Keep in mind this elephant killed a man named Red Eldridge the day before she was hung. She reportedly tossed him with her trunk then stepped on his head squishing his brains out into the street. To this day they still kill elephants that "go wild" and kill people, I've seen several instances of cops shooting at crazed circus elephants. "Wild" animals almost always revert to their instinctive traits at some point. Sad for the animal, and the people.

  • @clintonearlwalker Yes... She was enslaved, mistreated, and eventually freaked out. I don't feel sad for people who exploit animals and get what is coming to them.

  • @thestreetsempty I must admit that when I was kid, i grew up with guns and did things to animals I would never do now. I used leg hold steel jaw traps along with many other kids when we were young. As I've grown older I've become more aware of animals and their treatment. It basically boils down to one thing in almost every case, exploiting animals to make a buck. I don't think I would even go to a circus now as I know how the animals are treated.

  • @clintonearlwalker I'm relieved to read you no longer hunt or torture animals, and that you would be hesitant to attend circuses. It isn't fun for the animals, and we shouldn't use them as our entertainment. If you haven't already, please also consider extending your compassion to all sentient lifeforms - including animals used for food, clothing, labor, etc. You are right that it all comes down to profiting from their suffering.

  • Poor Mary

She had been with the circus and the owners for decades and then she was sent to her death because the owners wanted to keep the crowds happy. Hard to believe there wasn't more of an uproar back then about this rash decision to publicly strangle an giant beautiful creature to death..

  • So much suffering...

  • im in a play about this elephant the play is called elephants graveyard you should read it

  • THE PEOPLE WHO DID THIS HAD NO FORGIVENESS WHAT SO EVER. & THE PEOPLE WHO WATCHED, YELLING, HANG THE ELEPHANT, HAD NO HEART. IT'S A SHAME WHAT HUMANS CAN DO & HOW THEY ENJOY DOING IT. ALL I CAN SAY IS REST IN PEACE MARY, YOU HAD A HARD LIFE. <3

  • Poor, poor Mary.

What a terrible, frightening death she had to suffer.

  • R.I.P. poor innocent Mary. They should have hung the men who abused you and have treaed you with much more care, respect and understanding

  • On the pic you can see, she doesn't have the tusks , so it was before hanging removed.

  • I really liked it but the words went a tad too fast

  • Damn my names mary

  • @UFMmichigangirl YOU SHOULDN'T JOKE AROUND ABOUT THIS, IT'S SAD

  • Capitalism, Imperialism. They are all at fault! Socialist countries didn't invade countries and made them slaves! Socialist countries didn't capture animals and tortured them and then shoot them or hanged them. Only Imperialistic Capitalist nations did this

  • @SMGJohn Capitalism allows for much profiting from nonhuman animals (and from humans). However, many socialist countries indeed used animals (for labor and food, mostly).

Before we established socialism, capitalism, etc. - we used animals. And despite which structure, we still would. Our entitlement over animals is the issue. How we regard them as commodities rather than acknowledging their sentience.

In the fur industry, China is notorious for skinning animals alive.

  • @thestreetsempty Well China is not Socialist so. If those Socialist countries you talk about labour, I think those must be the African Socialist countries that existed a long time ago. Western nations or Eastern nations such as Soviet Union only used farm animals.

  • Mary's experience reminds me of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, although that was fiction I believe it was based in knowledge of "humanity's" hideous, cowardly, sadistic, flaming stupidity... and resulting totally baseless arrogance. What a combo, what a species. This is a beautiful, haunting tribute to Mary and her "life" and fate at human hands. People should learn something valuable for a change and stop being the monsters of this beautiful Earth. Thank you my dear friend.

  • Shit. This is devastating. Thanks for this as I was completely unaware. It helps to maintain focus on what really matters to be reminded of such tragedies.

  • When will people understand what's really at stake when they go to a circus. I've never been to one, but I drove by one and was shocked to see three large elephants chained to a mobile home I guess waiting to do their next performance. It was a disturbing site and looking into their eyes you could see their despair. When people STOP going to circuses (and zoos too for that matter), the abuse will stop. Animals are not ours to USE and ABUSE. GREAT VIDEO!

  • This reminds me of the terrible fate of another elephant around the same time under very similar circumstances. Thomas Edison arraigned for the electrocution of a New York circus elephant named Topsy to be filmed to make a profit off the film, and to make the alternating current form of electricity of his commercial rival Nikola Tesla seem too danger for the public to use. Your video is disturbing for the lack of empathy it shows in others. It serves as a good corrective in making ppl aware.

  • @markphonics They were considering electrocuting her, like Topsy. Hanging was more convenient.

It is rumored that not only was she hanged, but whites lynched two black men at the same site - implying speciesism and racism.

Understandably, Erwin wants to forget its past. Yet, they have a "Hanging Mary" memorabilia shop.

At the time of her death, Mary was suffering from infections in her tusk, torn tendons, bullet wounds, a broken hip, and probably PTSD - as she was in the circus since age 5.

  • @thestreetsempty There is a "Hanging Mary" memorabilia shop? Seriously? That's an outrage.... bloody hell!

  • Poor elephant... powerful video.

  • @graytaich0 She had a hard life and death, all to appease the boredom of humans.

Thank you for the song - it helped me make the video.

  • @thestreetsempty You're welcome. I'm proud to have contributed something to it.
