  • He discusses it in the preface to "Five Lessons"

  • Hogans swing was a disaster for most of us as 'we' tried to copy 'him' rather than look at some basic principles and work on them, the average joe tried to copy hogans hip action and then wondered why the ball ended up in the cabbages!

John Jacob's 'practical golf' is far better for the average golfer, your ball flight tells you what happened in your swing, and how to remedy it, which is what Hogan did!!

  • the one that beats the balls is the one that can't play... mrad... Learn about the history of golf and you will understand why he did that. They didn'thave the technology we have today. And even with the technology of today Mrad you can't break 90...

  • the one that beats the balls is the one that can't play... mrad...

  • In this clip, I've noticed Hogan is using an idea I thought of to improve my own newbie game, but wasn't sure the rules (current rules, anyway) allowed for it.

  • There is only a few thing you need to do to hit the ball straight, and believe me it's a lot easier than you think.

  • @EverythingGolf - As a newbie golfer, I know I'd sure appreciate reading / seeing any insights you appear to have.

  • \/ \/ .....Amen, boys....amen to those comments below! I also found it "in the dirt", along with tears, thrown clubs, bleeding hands, strained muscles.... When people learn how to stay balanced, swing on plane, and train the hands to shape the blade at impact, then they'll figure out how to move on to learning to how play the GAME.

  • He put ribs under his grips to open the face, he kept right elbow tucked in his side and he kept his left wrist flat. Do all that and you wont hit a draw. All this Mystique about his secret is a load of crap, he wasn't a golfing God. He had a swing FULL of compensations which worked for him, most people with any talent can reach a golfing zenith thats admirable if they can work on their swing 8 hours a day.

  • @Klistern2 no,he cupped his left wrist. That opened the face so he wouldn't hook anymore.

  • @rw5791 so the 5 degree open clubface did nothing?

  • @Klistern2 you said he kept his left wrist flat.Find some slo-mo videos of hogan and study his position at the top of the swing. You'll see that his left wrist was cupped, not flat.

  • @Klistern2 hardly a word of that statement is accurate. he won nine majors (10 if you count his wartime us open) and missed a lot of golf due to the war and his accident after which he wasn't the same player. he is the father or most every golf swing you see today in one way or another and contributed more the sport of golf than probably any professional athlete has contributed to their chosen sport in modern history. he was also a gentleman, you could take a leaf from his book on that part

  • @silowhore Silo whore, gentleman?.... Anyway If i offended you by My opinion you really are a tad over sensitive, was Hogan your father or something?.... people and their hero worshiping ...

  • @Klistern2 i will vigorously defend the people i regard, they are few and far between. if that is over sensitive so be it. i stand by every word i said. you are yet to contribute a single line of merit to this thread.

  • The One and only.

They don't make 'm like this anymore.

  • good on you, ben hogan. rest in peace.

  • @thehurtboy4 ben hogan never used an interlocking grip, read five lessons, he overlapped.

  • high fade is the prettiest shot in golf

  • i no his secret

  • shhhh, it's a secret.

  • If beating balls was his secret, why did he discover it in ONE MORNING?

  • He was just messing with their minds.

  • First of all it is not a secret. Ben was not the first last or only player to employ this method. Secondly, you don't have to hit a single ball to figure it out if you understand the swing.

  • The secret is in the dirt...

  • Well said my friend. WELL SAID!!!

  • You'll discover Hogan's secret as soon you develop the drive, work-ethic, and passion that Hogan had.

  • does anyone know where this video came from? it's not the hogan vs. snead dvd because i have that (which shows some of this interview, but not the whole interview).

  • A Hard Case from Texas

  • It's pretty amazing how he transformed himself into one of the greatest ballstrikers, if not the greatest ballstriker of all time.

Steel shafts and the modern swing were in their infancy, he had no high speed videos, no pro holding his hand, and no psychobabbler to coddle a weak mind.

I also love how he handled his golf club mfg. business. Threw away junk right at the start, and told those trying to organize his business to go screw themselves.

    We need more like him.

  • Hogan had lots of 'secrets' (the secret of the elbows, the secret of the right knee, etc.) but only one 'Secret.' Don't bother to look for it in his swing mechanics, though. It was psychological. Through self-hypnosis, he was able to put himself in an altered state of consciousness, or 'the zone', at will.

  • I'm so sick of hearing about the "secret." I know the secret, and I'll tell you what it is. Ready for this? Beat balls until your hands are bloody pulps, just like Ben did. Figure it out for yourself, find what works and work like hell at it.

  • so true there is no secret to golf, if u have the passion and fun practicing after a wile it will all start to settle in.

  • There is no secret. Why? Because one can analyze Hogan's swing frame by frame. Golf is not played in a vacuum, it's played so that all can see.

Hogan was playing with the other pro's heads.

  • Hogan had issues with the press...they made things up or embelished them like they do today...and when he made the comment about the secret, because he was so successful at golf they made it more than it was so he just let them run with it to think they had something.......I think his secret was "HIS" secret to fix the issues "HE" had (hook)..it is just like all of us who play and then try something and it works..because we don't practice it all the time it goes away...Hogan practiced his Secret

  • there is no secret, but there is something that makes everyones swing work. thats all he did, made his swing so he could not hit a shot that he dreaded all his life(a hook).

  • just swing more from down the line with the face slghtly open as opposed to inside and turning over...

  • his secret was cupping the left wrist at the top of the swing. this allowed him to turn his left arm as much as had been doin b4 the changed, but the face would not be closed. he still had a slightly arched left wrist at impact but not as muched

  • so the secret was his right elbow leading ?
