The poor quality of the video makes it look like the most cutting edge video ever produced. Even if it had done on purpose one couldn't get such an excellent effect. Brilliant! ... not all of us have broad noses and full lips. We are a very varied and beautiful creation of God. Don't take away from us by generalizing us with stereotypes.
You are obviously right about the ignorance of generalizations, however, your statement:
"Don't take away from us by generalizing us with stereotypes"
implies that someone can take something away from you with words, which is of course untrue. Real happiness comes from within, therefore nobody can "take it away from you" unless you let them, by giving it to them. As long as we know ourselves, we don't have much to fear.
@valaurwen lol, what's wrong with having those features? granted we come in varieties, but there's nothing wrong with having those features either, I'm quite sure that isn't "taking away" from our beauty.
Who said that there was anything wrong with those features? IMy statement was clear: "Not all of us (black women) have broad noses and full lips". I personally constantly have people like "b0010100" telling me "you don't LOOK black" because while I have full lips I have a pretty small nose and not a large butt. It is a stereotype to say that black women typically have broad noses and full lips PERIOD. The women of our race are very very varied and beautiful in all of our forms.
@valaurwen technically it isn't. It's the truth. The majority of Blacks have broad noses compared to that of Whites, not all. I wouldn't call it a stereotype; they are features. Stereotypes are associated with negativity which is why your post came across as if having these types of features is somehow not beautiful. I don't have a really wide nose or full lips, but I don't mind if someone thinks that MANY Blacks have broad noses or full lips, because in reality it's the truth.
I understand what you're saying in that by calling it a stereotype it could sound as though I think such features are almost negative. However, "stereotypes are very often not associated with "negativity" such as "All asians are smart", "all Buddhists know martial arts", "all black people can dance/run/jump better than others", "black men have huge..." ... well you get the point.
The definition of the word "stereotype" is "A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image" and this is exactly how I was using the word. When I said "take away" from us I was directly referring to what I said right before that which was that we are an extremely varied "race" of people and to say we all LOOK the same freaking way is a damn stereotype and takes away from us, period. Many people see nothing wrong with saying we all look alike. Well I do.
@valaurwen broad noses and full lips are features-not stereotypes. I'm not generalizing, I never said everyone had them. I praised one dimension, I didn't put down the others. Recognizing our differences is not stereotyping, it's just acknowledging the passionate creativity of the Creator.
By saying "I love my black women, bright eyes, broad noses, full lips", you are generalizing very very broadly and stereotyping. If I said I love my white women and their small butts, thin lips, and tiny noses, that would be an extremely ignorant stereotyping and generalization. People like you are the same ones who say to me "you don't LOOK black" because I don't have a "broad nose". That is only a trait of a certain ethnic group of black people. There are MANY kinds of black beauty.
@valaurwen look let's get a couple of things straight, the majority of stereotypes are based upon truth. They become negative when ppl don't want to associate with them or if the majority views these stereotypes as being flawed and not within their standards. It's the same thing with fried chicken etc...It has been a staple within our communities for decades and yet when it became mimicked and unpopular many blks didn't want to associate with it. It's the same thing with this.
@valaurwen I do not know what portion of my original statement was not made abundantly clear by my second statement. I said I was praising one dimension of black women, which I have a right to do. By praising that dimension I am not putting down any other dimension of black beauty. Obviously you have had issues with others "accepting" you as you are. However unfortunate, those people are not me. I have never said you do or do not "look black". Don't put words in my mouth.
I was explaining my response to your FIRST statement. I don't know how that isn't clear.... I didn't say that you said that I don't look black - WHAT?! I said people like you are the same ones who say that sort of thing to me and other black females who don't have broad noses, etc - who don't that stereotype. I have no issues w/ ppl not accepting me as I am... how you got that I don't know but thanks for your concern. Chillax - as I said don't stereotype, black women are very varied.
@videochemist --way too late for that. I have some hope, but not a lot of faith, except in a crisis. I appreciate your candor. Excellent video, though, no? Provocative.

it seems to be "Les Humphries Singers"
The band was quite famous here in Germany in the early 70's. Conducted by the late Les Humphries an Englishman who lived in Hamburg at the time.
They have the same clip with "Motherless Child" here on YT. Check it out.

I followed a thread of videos to your video, and I really really really like it. I think the poor quality adds to it's mystique. My favourite version of it so far!!! It holds alot of feeling, that girl can sing
