  • The name of the group is Les Humphries Singers.

  • I can relate...as a chicana, my roots reach down south of this continent, but it was never my mother land. I was born in the north of america, the united states and I do not feel at home...living through some jim crow mess all over again....same injustice different color.

  • Liz Mitchell. Les Humphries singers. There is a far better quality, color clip floating around on YouTube

  • @Ork1958: I've seen it, but for some reason, this version looks and sounds better.

  • I love this theatrical version - but nothing beats Richie Havens at Woostock!

  • The Odetta version is better for me.

  • This video is surprisingly beautiful

  • /watch?v=ZIBa-Og-VJE&feature=related

  • why does race come up so often when viewing black or asian or any non white rtist? cant we just look at people as people without the lens?

  • @MegaAnointedone It depends on the genre of music but with African- Americans most music has grown from the oppressed state of our people and so the struggle of our race is infused in the soul of the music.

  • @MegaAnointedone Hip-hop grew out of the streets, the struggles of the 60's and the 70's; Jazz and ragtime(blues included) from the turn of the century (1900); the slave narrative- obvious connection-- Plus it's American nature to occlude people because of race, and that's on all sides of the spectrum.

  • I feel like the video quality adds to the feel of the music. Amazing version!

  • WOW

  • one of my favourite things on youtube.

  • I can't express with words...

  • check out the Martin Gore version....

  • Wonderful. Thanks for posting this gem.

  • such a beautiful song ...beautiful...makes you wonder about all the crude messages I see here.. where is the heart for another human with a wonderful voice and message..the human heart is truly desparately wicked as God's word says for another one to say such things..God have mercy on the makers of the insensitive uncaring inhuman comments to another person

  • beautiful black sista

  • HuumeKauppias - go get the help you so obviously need.

  • @hymnlover1 This IS help. This person is expressing a feeling and it is the right feeling.

  • @HuumeKauppias = ig·no·rant

    adjective /ˈignərənt/

    - Lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated

    - Lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about something in particular

    - Discourteous or rude

    - Easily angered

  • @HuumeKauppias

You really vomited blood? That could be esophageal varices (where the swollen veins may burst, and you die,) or stomach cancer (wherein you will die a horribly painful death.)

Gee, I sure hope you don't get that looked at.

  • @HuumeKauppias It must really suck to be you...PEACE.

  • somehow the video just adds to it. it would normally be annoying but it works here.

  • I don't understand how music changed so drastically from their beautiful voices and instruments to this of what it is today imean lik I'm only 16 n it's gotta be sumthin wrong if i have to point this out

  • @queenie42ify Maybe it's partly down to the general rise of materialism and the associated almost complete commercialisation of the music industry. That's my take opinion. Profit has became the main aim, due to the almost unrivalled control of the record companies, so of course they have standardised and sanitised music, often making it less inventive, but most definitely less expressive (unless you count the naked attempt to become rich as expressive). This is just one part of the trend in...

  • @queenie42ify ...society towards materialism. Well, that's the way I see things, but of course I don't force that view on anyone else.

  • her eyes look so tired and sad.

  • This is the first song included in the movie "Woodstock". Of course, it was a vastly different arrangement, and Richie Havens called it "Freedom".

Very cool tune, either way, but I actually like Richie's better as I am an acoustic guitar fan.

  • they are named les humphries singers. she is li mitchell :) and the perform is from 1971 :P

  • i never hear this befor

  • she is fricking gorgeous

  • This is les humphies. it is 1971 and it's not live unfortunately. Great song tho!

  • The poor quality of the video makes it look like the most cutting edge video ever produced. Even if it had done on purpose one couldn't get such an excellent effect. Brilliant! And her performance is so beautiful, so simple and not oversung like Christina Aguilera or Mariah Carey would so annoyingly do!

  • The bad quality of the film actually adds to the song, I think. I like it just like it is. It's beautiful.

  • sometimes i do feel like a motherless child sometimes my mom goes out and tells me she's gonna be right back but then she doesnt come back until 4:00 a.m on the next morning.

  • @ltopoku I feel your pain , I'm 18 now , & I haven't talked to my mom since I moved out 8 months ago... I don't even know if she's alive .

  • wonderful thanks. I have loved Richie Havens version for years but this..... <3

  • Liz Mitchell from the Les Humphries

    I love this tune!

    Like someone said before:

    "Some

    Soul

    For ya"

    Amen :)

  • WOW WHAT A FIND!!!!

  • What a beautiful woman!

  • see this in color here:

    youtube.com/watch?v=ZIBa-Og-VJE

  • More power to the original song!....but at the same time Ive seen a couple other videos that sang it bettah.

  • listen to "Esther Ofarim"!! She is so mutch better!!!!

  • Tom jones does a way better version! Tom jones is a badass.

  • @2cutthroatterrorist The Chuck Norris of singing!

  • @PhantomLyric Ya I just like tom jones version he sounds more crisp and it has more feeling.

  • i love the poor video quality. it matches the dreamy, psychedelic arrangement.

  • she´s so beautiful like her voice!

  • Soul fo yo ass!

  • what a beautiful song and beautiful songstress! I absolutely love my black women, bright eyes, broad noses, full lips in all their glowing tones! Keep shining ladies! <3 <3 <3

  • @b0010100

... not all of us have broad noses and full lips. We are a very varied and beautiful creation of God. Don't take away from us by generalizing us with stereotypes.

  • @valaurwen

You are obviously right about the ignorance of generalizations, however, your statement:

"Don't take away from us by generalizing us with stereotypes"

implies that someone can take something away from you with words, which is of course untrue. Real happiness comes from within, therefore nobody can "take it away from you" unless you let them, by giving it to them. As long as we know ourselves, we don't have much to fear.

  • @valaurwen lol, what's wrong with having those features? granted we come in varieties, but there's nothing wrong with having those features either, I'm quite sure that isn't "taking away" from our beauty.

  • @psychmaj323

Who said that there was anything wrong with those features? IMy statement was clear: "Not all of us (black women) have broad noses and full lips". I personally constantly have people like "b0010100" telling me "you don't LOOK black" because while I have full lips I have a pretty small nose and not a large butt. It is a stereotype to say that black women typically have broad noses and full lips PERIOD. The women of our race are very very varied and beautiful in all of our forms.

  • @valaurwen technically it isn't. It's the truth. The majority of Blacks have broad noses compared to that of Whites, not all. I wouldn't call it a stereotype; they are features. Stereotypes are associated with negativity which is why your post came across as if having these types of features is somehow not beautiful. I don't have a really wide nose or full lips, but I don't mind if someone thinks that MANY Blacks have broad noses or full lips, because in reality it's the truth.

  • @psychmaj323

I understand what you're saying in that by calling it a stereotype it could sound as though I think such features are almost negative. However, "stereotypes are very often not associated with "negativity" such as "All asians are smart", "all Buddhists know martial arts", "all black people can dance/run/jump better than others", "black men have huge..." ... well you get the point.

  • @psychmaj323

The definition of the word "stereotype" is "A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image" and this is exactly how I was using the word. When I said "take away" from us I was directly referring to what I said right before that which was that we are an extremely varied "race" of people and to say we all LOOK the same freaking way is a damn stereotype and takes away from us, period. Many people see nothing wrong with saying we all look alike. Well I do.

  • @valaurwen broad noses and full lips are features-not stereotypes. I'm not generalizing, I never said everyone had them. I praised one dimension, I didn't put down the others. Recognizing our differences is not stereotyping, it's just acknowledging the passionate creativity of the Creator.

  • @b0010100

By saying "I love my black women, bright eyes, broad noses, full lips", you are generalizing very very broadly and stereotyping. If I said I love my white women and their small butts, thin lips, and tiny noses, that would be an extremely ignorant stereotyping and generalization. People like you are the same ones who say to me "you don't LOOK black" because I don't have a "broad nose". That is only a trait of a certain ethnic group of black people. There are MANY kinds of black beauty.

  • @valaurwen look let's get a couple of things straight, the majority of stereotypes are based upon truth. They become negative when ppl don't want to associate with them or if the majority views these stereotypes as being flawed and not within their standards. It's the same thing with fried chicken etc...It has been a staple within our communities for decades and yet when it became mimicked and unpopular many blks didn't want to associate with it. It's the same thing with this.

  • @valaurwen I do not know what portion of my original statement was not made abundantly clear by my second statement. I said I was praising one dimension of black women, which I have a right to do. By praising that dimension I am not putting down any other dimension of black beauty. Obviously you have had issues with others "accepting" you as you are. However unfortunate, those people are not me. I have never said you do or do not "look black". Don't put words in my mouth.

    Find peace!

  • @b0010100

I was explaining my response to your FIRST statement. I don't know how that isn't clear.... I didn't say that you said that I don't look black - WHAT?! I said people like you are the same ones who say that sort of thing to me and other black females who don't have broad noses, etc - who don't that stereotype. I have no issues w/ ppl not accepting me as I am... how you got that I don't know but thanks for your concern. Chillax - as I said don't stereotype, black women are very varied.

  • i love this version!

  • martin gore's version is better

  • Yu have no ... forget it...

  • One of the greatest songs ever, This is a great version , Mahila Jackson does it were it would put you i other space

  • Everything about this video and music is fantastic, including the distortions of the recording. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • one of the top 5 most beautiful things i have been exposed to on the internet.

  • @videochemist Try chat roulette

  • @nilbud

lol, I would have to list that among the top 5 things on the internet to make you lose faith in humanity.

  • @videochemist --way too late for that. I have some hope, but not a lot of faith, except in a crisis. I appreciate your candor. Excellent video, though, no? Provocative.

  • @deltatangofoxtot

as are many of the videos on your channel my friend.

  • put this in youtube and check itf you like

    Sometimes I feel.... 09-Oct-2009

  • Thanx for the upload.

  • This is Liz Mitchell with the Les Humphries Singers. She was normally in Boney M, but this was before Boney M seeing as how they started in '75.

  • If Boney M always sounded like this I would own all of their albums.

  • "LIZ MITCHELL" Born July , 12 , 1952 ,Clarendon ,JAMAICA ,ELIZABETH MITCHELL , Lead Singer Boney M .

  • I loooooove the quality of this video!

  • you're so right

  • Comment removed

  • It is Liz Mitchell and Les Humphries Singers. Liz Mitchell was in Boney M, the singers are German and were in Eurovision once. The video is a kinescope, a primitive way of filming a live TV performance. The same clip exists in color, but with fuzzier audio.

  • Martin Gore does a really good version of this song...

  • Beautiful Liz.

  • rogerdabadge82 's comment made it seem like it is from distant world.

    hootie and the blow fish?

    wow!

  • On Hootie and the Blowfish first album "Cracked Rear View" There was a hidden song called "Motherless Child" it was A cappella great song! wish i could find it online by Hootie, but i cant find a copy anywhere.

  • yes nutjob, I agree, the bad quality makes it seem like a message from another world

  • Anyone else thing that the terrible video quality adds a whole new layer to it all?

  • I think it's a traditional song.

  • :'(

    (tears)

    what a beatiful song

  • exellent song;D

  • Les Humphries - Motherless child 1971

  • Comment removed

  • Arrangement is a bit over the top, but the soloist is just wonderful.

  • That's just the style of that time...

But I definitely agree, the main singer is fantastic!!

  • Where did you come to this tune, from Richie Havens?

  • Was just checking out various versions of all kinds of spirituals. I really love them.

  • I think this singer is Liz Mitchell from Boney M. They recorded a very good version of this.

  • I get the connecction. The "Mother" in this song is "Africa". The "Slaves" are the "Child"

  • no shit sherlock

  • U aint know that "Sherlock"

  • nice grammar

  • Thanks, i didn't know that! Good song, cute singer btw too

  • Why not try Bobby Breen`s version - available on YT?

  • Yea, these are the Les Humphries Singers. I heard a little bit of an accent from the woman singing. "Imma coming on to you right now yea"2:13

  • When WAS this? 1965? Looks older than the 70's. This looks like the 60's about to be the 70's.

  • I love this song. It's actually a Negro Spiritual.

  • wonderful version

  • normally this song is from "bobby Breen" a singer of negro spiritual and gospel ..

  • Very nice.

  • And Martin L Gore (Depeche Mode) all versions from any singer are fanthastic to hear....

  • Sometimes I feel like a motherless child, a long way from home .... Can relate to that!

  • Looks like the "Les Humphries Singers" from Germany, I'm rather sure.

  • What a pretty song...I'm singing this for my choir solo.

  • wow!!came across this by accident looking for the ghostface killa tune of the same name,,what a beautiful version.

  • only one word for this... WOW!

  • pardon my ignorance but who is the oman who sings this beautiful song?

  • thank you for posting this as i have been showing it...but i never said thanks.

    so thanks!

    a.

  • shes beautiful, vocally and visually

  • true!

  • She's Liz Mitchell, and she went on to sing lead for Boney M. This group is the Les Humphries Singers... Great recording. (It's funny, this is obviously a video of a black and white TV, because the original video is in color.)

  • Just simply brilliant! I think I like the poor video quality. It adds to the 'ambience.'

  • wow...simply beautiful. the soulfulness...the harmony...the purity! i love this

  • Beautifully sung, the best version.

  • @ rahdeal, guess you just like Mahalia Jackson's version better, to me though that lacks soul and alot more :)

  • mahalias is better but there is nothing wrong with this 1 she sounds good

  • its a good song, it could have been a great song but it lacks soul. i guess shes singin on pale folk frequencies

  • perfect

  • the poor quality makes it more unique.love it . love the singergirl.

  • this is fucking amazing

  • Search: Motherless Child - Liz Mitchell - Les Humphries Singers - (ca. 1974) later known as Singer from Mon... "Boney M." ;)

  • I'm singing this song right now! I love it, but it's so sad!

  • Wow. Beautiful voice, beautiful woman, so much sadness in her eyes and soulful voice. Who is she?

  • Wonderful song and this woman has such a beautiful vioce and her eyes are so amazing^^. 5/5

  • just beautifully sung , so soulful

  • Who's that girl ? She's great !

  • what can I say...old skl does it

  • I followed a thread of videos to your video, and I really really really like it. I think the poor quality adds to it's mystique. My favourite version of it so far!!! It holds alot of feeling, that girl can sing
