Dogs are usually naturally loyal to their owner. When I was a child I had a German Shepard, he was un-trained. I was walking him when someone got into an argument with me about some issue. When he got in my face, the dog lunged at him and knocked him on his ass. I had to pull my dog off of him as he cut him up pretty bad. Had I not stopped him, the dog would have killed him.
dogylover1 - You're so sure she's playing a game with the arm piece, put a protective arm piece on then wield a weapon menacingly in the other. Care to guess which arm the dog's gonna go for? Familydobes are responsible breeders and knowledgeable trainers. You'd do well to educate yourself more about this kind of training before commenting carelessly.
The dog has gotten to the point where he knows what a protective arm peice is, and that hes supose to bite it. Take that protective arm off and I dont see the man getting bit. This seems more like a game to him, He needs more training. Thus it could also be that he will bite anyone who puts their arm up as well. Just my opinion on the reactions the dog is giving. Plus his barking. But I cant hear commands because of the music too.
@dogylover1 Well had you been at that session you would have seen Ty Brown of communicanine get bit live on the chest for walking up too close too fast to the handler. This dog was trained to bite for real, and did perform his job for his owner. Naturally in training we use equipment to minimize the risk of injury to the trainers and the dogs, but don't think that means they are only equipment oriented.
Dobermans and Rottweilers will defend there masters instinctively.
They don't need training. I own 6 Rotts and 2 Dobs.
One dog you don't want to get on the wrong side of is a female Rottweiler. Smaller than the Male, sure, but the female will quite literally fight to the death.
Absolutely fantastic with children though as long as you raise them properly from pup.
Carlosedm- Its my personal opinion/ experience that some breeds may be more likely to hurt a person. Again "personally" I keep my guard up around Akita s and Dalmatians
First 10 secs, if that lady was sitting like that at a county fair, and some kids come running around the corner of her vehicle like that chasing each other, that dog is gonna be all over them!
dogs are remarkably intuitive when it comes to reading the intentions of people. you have to think, they live their entire lives amongst a pack of dogs, that speaks almost entirely with body language. it's not perfect, because sometimes people send confusing messages via body language, but it's pretty good. once you realize how little the barks and whines and growls actually mean, you'll understand how much information gets passed along with body language alone
I think what they mean isthat if the dog is trained to protect he needs to do so of his own accord. EG. If someone who isnt a Friend Incapacitates the handler to the point of not being able to give a comand the dog needs to act of his own initive. I know thats how Id prefer My dobermann. If they are properly trained and the dog is about to make a mistake then the handler should be able to give a single command to cease before it gets out of hand."
"The dog needs to make decisions on his own" "he needs to bite without command " ...yeahh...I don't think so. See guard breeds already have this instinct, and to encourage that is just asking for a lawsuit. I think the focus of most guard training is to have the dog listen to your you, so that he will cease to attack when you decide, and to show that you are in control. What happens if a friend your dog never met playfully hits you with a newspaper and your dog suddenly bites? He better listen
Honestly guys, check out the site and you'll all see that this people are serious about their Dobies and how they select-breed them. As far as attacking on their own without a command, well, come live in Brazil and you'll change your mind very, very quickly. What I want to say is that it all depends.
That's why dobies are excellent for this task. They have supreme situational awareness. I do not know of any other breed which has that trait so firmly ingrained in the breed. My dog is 100% reliable but when he thinks somebody can not be trusted... so do I. On top of that he will only stand between me and that other person and bark. I've never had anybody attack me, but I'm sure that if some poor soul would be that stupid he will take that person down within an instant.
Problem is, if you train a dog to attack someone who is trying to harm you. If you set your dog on them in a public place (park, car park, street etc) That person can go to the police and say they were attacked, and the dog would be destroyed and you'd have a heifty fine. Stupid eh!
yeah there is that I suppose. The other problem is thanks to television Dobermans have a bad reputation of being savage killers. When infact they are complete sooks. (I have two)
So people are more likely to believe a doberman attacked the person. If it had been a Labrador it would be a different story.
Well, my neighbour has one dobe and it's very courageous, but it's very obedient as well.
I think only brave and fearless dogs make good and stable companions, because very few things cause them to act agressive.
I have seen few Labs doing a great protection/guard jobs. I think it's no good when the ad-popular breeds get spoiled by 'puppy milling'. Labs have very strong jaws too, they were used to retrieve big shoots -- no one supposes the lab can bite; once he does, there's one finger left ;]
Many of the original breed were pretty snippy and would bite you when they were brought to heal from behind, but the breed today has been stablized in it's temporment.
better than being killed, robbed or harmed if you ask me..most people are smart enough to not mess with someone when they have a dog with them..others are just retards that probably deserve to get bit anyway...
@no1horselover I think you have every right to train your dog that way, and honestly people are going to go to the cops saying "Yeah I was trying to hurt him/her and their dog attacked me"
@rangeordie the point is they didnt tell the cops they were going to hurt someone and their dog bite them, the story will be "i was walking by him/her peacefully and all the sudden their dog just attack me." and then you will get sue for it
@no1horselover I think you have every right to train your dog that way, and honestly people are going to go to the cops saying "Yeah I was trying to hurt him/her and their dog attacked me"
wat a wkd dog,and as 4 all the people comentin sayin the dog will atack any1 runnin at the owner,im sure like all p,p,d's the owner has a gud 1 word comand just incase the dog does mistake sum 1 inocent 4 an atacker and i liked ur truck 2 lol,
so wat happens if someone runs to the handler excitedly but only wants to have fun and not attack? do they go over that? or is it just the running up part to the owner part?
It's a bad idea to run to anyone excitedly who has a dog, it is also considered rude. How the dog would react depends on the individual dogs training. Most of my dogs would not let you run up to me regardless of your intentions. Approach all dogs in a calm manner for safety and courtesy
dude?? kids dont know crap about approaching dogs... and im surly not gunna teach em all...send you do to a course.. get you buddy fully rounded. needs more structure... your asociating biting an attacker with playing.. it needs to be a job.. to protect.. not to bit to get rewarded
Its true that it would be rude and foolish to directly run at someone with a dog, but, at the begining of this clip, the man is running from around a "blind area" and is attacked. I hope this doesnt mean that a bi-product of having a dog trained for personal protection means that some rambunctious kid that unknowingly mimics what the man at the begining of this clip does, will get the same treatment from the dog. That would be a bit scary for me to own a dog that would make this type of decision
It's a fairytale-like example of behavior 'trojanfan525' had given. Who'd be stupid enough to charge at the protection dog? Many people walk me by in a curve when I'm walking out mine St. Bernard...
thats what u want to teach him..haha did u see the baseball kids in the back. I wud hate to see the doby attack a kid running to third base.nah that wud be funny
During IPO competitions your dog will get 2 (?) hits down the side. Aswell as the figurant waving the stick close to the dobermanns face (for the mental pressure of it). This is to see if the dog will hold a firm bite even if hit. This requires a selfcomfident dog with good nerves. Unfortunatly for the breed, alot of breeders breed on nervous and anxcious dogs, I spendt a year of looking before I found mine, be critical, use your time and get rewarded. sorry for the poor english aswell!
They do that so the dog reacts to a hostile situation in the right way so they dont run away and leave you alone to be attacked, they start to like it after a while and see it as a game. They have to have some bravado and courage...

No. If you are worried about that, there is a very simple solution. When training a dog to guard, it is possible to train them almost exclusively to work on command.
