Um...Did all of these people going crazy over this song hear the same one I heard? I only looked this up because I'm a JCM fan for like 30 years now. I heard about this show and never saw it. And I thought he SUUUUUUUUCKED!!!!!!!! What was with the talk-sing-pause-sing-pause-pause-sing-talk-pause-talk-sing CRAP he was doing? Losing his touch. BIGTIME.
First off, I think this is an original interpretation of this song done as only Mellencamp can do it. But I'm willing to be that Springsteen was thinking "WHAT THE HELL..?
John, My grand daughter Jadea would like a copy of your picture. If you would, please sign it. She is a big fan of your. She is two. If you would. Thanks in advance. her grandmother nt
The record he heard in the record store in Indiana was The Wild The Innocent and the E street shuffle released september 1973...he said it was his best spent money ever!
Unfortunately, this version is still incomplete, since during the middle of the song, Mellencamp told an apparently great story about when he first heard one of Springsteen's records playing in a record store. (I haven't heard the story myself, but I've heard/read a lot of positive stuff about it.) It's kinda strange that Mellencamp's official website is calling this "complete/unedited", since the story segment is missing completely. Perhaps he didn't like how he told the story?
@ShawnPoole John told that story before he played this song, not in the middle of it (why would he stop in the middle of a song and start telling a story at a tribute show?). This is the complete version, although I would like to hear those comments.
Oh yeah. Bruce's radio version was too easily taken as only a "rah-rah USA" thing - Mellencamp does a great job exposing the other layers. Check out the Obamas looking thoughtul at 1:54.
Hauntingly beautiful
