I have this exact same noise. And it's not necessarily during intense read/write operations. Although that is when it's at it's worst. Is this normal??
well... I just got the same thing... The starnge thing about mine is that it only sounds when I'm NOT using the hard drive. When I use it, it sounds completely normal... Sooooo strange :p
That is normal drive access noise. If you notice a lot of unusual amount of hard disk activity going on or it takes forever to load programs or files, then you will need to defragment it.
@HoneycombAgent mine works hard at start up( got mechanic registry running and prob other crap i don't need going at startup) but sometimes makes this weird KERCHEW noise after it stops spinning fast. No other symptoms other then the weird noise, but mechanic registry tells me my system health is LOW and i do get alot of "not responding" messages but think it's prob alot of software errors?
@DrPersonman I did and he told me that probably my HD is failing , but judging from your video it's not a problem. I have run 3 different program test and they all found my disc health ok! I bought this Drive 40 euro 2 years ago and now it costs 170! Due to the WD factory disaster. It would be a shame if i just throw them away. How long did yours lasted after this noise? Thanks 4 the reply BTW : )
@Athens561987 It still works fine though for the last year and half I have switched from using it as my main drive to using it for backups and downloads.
One of my harddrives started making this noise a few weeks back, about 90% of the time it is making this noise, even when the computer is not evening doing anything. Contemplating replacing the harddrive, it is that annoying.
@alitorocanrol I suggest you visit a tech forum like techspot or toms hardware, there are a lot more people that are a lot more knowledgeable than I am on both of those forums. I usually frequent techspot, the community is pretty nice but not as large so the replies come slower. I don't go to toms hardware much but the people their seem to reply faster and such.
mine does this annoyingly loud... I hate packard bell for using cheapest parts and NO sound isolation at all xD
But.. I have a concern... Somtimes it starts to randomly go: Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*tick click ckack*Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*claclick clunk* buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:etc... It continues until it has to do something again(windows asking data to keep runnung etc). I'm a little worried... Is this OK?!
p.s some other models make this noise too! common with seagate tho. a friend of mine had a problem with his screen not coming on so i took the side off then wile listening booted the pc up, when it should boot windows the hdd was seeking and reading making this noise... i told him its booting so his settings are out of range for his monitor shutting the monitor down. he took it to work used another monitor that has 75Hz hay presto worked, set resolution to 60Hz 800x700 tested it and fine.
this seek noise is perfectly normal and shouldn't be worried about one bit. all seagate hdds make this noise and personally i think its a good feature as if your PC screen wont boot you can pin point what is wrong because if its seeking a lot around the time it normally boots its reading data and in that case is booting windows. you can pin point weather the problem is your screen resolution out of range, ram has failed, hdd has failed and so on. stop worrying, seagate = reliability
sounds like a seagate barracuda! that noise is a sign of a healthy head. i like drives to do that so i can tell if anything is going on with read/write issues and if your pc is not responding you can here if the hdd is working or idle handy noise if having boot issues or screen wont turn on
@SaucyBegger25 Just got a new PC!!! My pc guy recommended the seagate Barracuda, and as my old HDD made noises louder than this. Suddenly I could hear a faint noise similar to this. So you reckon this is normal nor a seagate?
@SaucyBegger25 I have had one of these barracuda's @ dad's place... I got a new 1 whit a dead silent hdd... Scraed the fuck outta me when i clicked something and there was zero noise xD Thank GOD 4 teh HDD light:P
It's your hard drive farting... I get that annoying noise at times too. whenever I hear that noise, it feels like someone is hacking and downloading data from my hard drive.
Dude that harddrive is fine... unless it goes CLICK CLICK CLICK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK BEEP, or something like that. Those noises are very common.. there besically read and right noises. So your drive is fine.
Thanks, I figured it was fine, its been almost a year and nothing has happened to it, I had only been concerned at the time because my other one did not make these noises. I have found that if i defragment it often the noise becomes inaudible over the noise of all the fans. I also found that auslogics disk defrag made it even quieter then the normal windows one whilst increasing my fraps recording frame rate 10 fold at the same time.
@DrPersonman Yeah, usually when it isn't defragged the data is unorganized causing the Read/Write are to rapidly go accross the platters to get what it is looking for! :) What type of drive is that? Seagate?
@dq476 Ahh thank you! It is a Excelstore Jupiter series 160gb hard drive. Excelstore seems to be a pretty small manufacturer. After I got windows 7 I formatted the drive and only used it for downloads and junk so I haven't heard a noise from it.
Well the one that makes that noise is actually a 160gb one but it hasn't failed yet so I don't think it will for some time. I did notice that if I run auslogics disk defrag (free) it quiets down a lot. The normal windows defrager makes it less audible too but not as well as auslogics disk defrag which I have checked with avast, ad aware, spybot S&D and the built in windows things and none of them say its a virus or maul ware but it does seem to work noticeably better then the windows defragger.
i have an old acer aspire m1610 and the first month the cd drive went funky and a year later the drive started a to fail and got slow so i put over $400 into it and it runs faster but still is slow...hard sata cable snapped off the drive..lol..the first time i super glued it and now im using a noisy piece of shit...annoying.
Sounds like you could have bad sectors, but other than that it sounds normal. But back up your data anyway. Seriously, bad sectors usually mean impending doom.
Mine is completely fine though if yours gets any louder you might want to join a forum like tech spot or toms hardware and ask what the best coarse of action would be, you also might want to back up anything important to you. Mine had done it for a long time but I only noticed it when I replaced the stock CPU cooler with a quieter one and I have been using it for almost 2 years. I have noticed that if you defragment it more often it gets quieter, I would recommend auslogics disk defrag its free
After replacing a cpu and vga cooler, when I got my pc back from service, I exactly got the same noise coming from my hdd, it was on service for around 15 days and I'm not sure if it's because of the inactivity. The noise is constant and getting louder while running programs. I'm pretty concerned now, just curious if your hdd is still making the same noise and is it working fine?
Yes it is still making this noise but its covered up a bit by my 120mm fans, and yes its still working fine. Its not as bad if you schedule it to defrag every night. I would still recommend making a backup onto some dvds or what ever you have, just as a precaution. If it does start to get noticeably worse all the time, not just while running applications, make sure to back up anything new you make and I would recommend starting a thread techspot for help if you feel like you need to.
Cool It hasn't failed yet so I guess its not just the excellstor brand pr failing. I was just concerned because I had just replaced the stock AMD cooler with a nice and quiet hdt s1283 which must have just reviled the noise and my other hard drive wasn't making the noise but it hasn't seemed to make as much of that noise if any lately but then again its getting colder here so maybe the metal just shrank.
hey if you thinking of that noise the kinda skips a little,im not too sure but that happens to my comp when i start it up sometimes, and so far nothing bad has happened from that, but you oughta call me and ill ask my dad
Check your hard drive if it has bad sector. I think

De-fragment your drive, it's trying to access data at different parts of the HDD too quickly so it's struggling.

... What? You're insane.
Everyone's computers click a lot like that, but that's because their reading data you skitzo, not the "government tracking you."
The government does not watch you behind your back like that. It is unethical and from what I know, illegal.
Go to a mental hospital.
But if you're just on YouTube to make retarded comments like this, then just screw off.
