I bought one new in 1976. Late 70s, my brother did some damage, so it wa s rebuilt with a hog wheel, mid-rise bars and MCM 2-into-1 headers (with removable baffle) ... rode and sounded GREAT! On of the best engineered bikes in my book. Maintenance was so easy, and, it didn't leak like my BSA! Great bike, my friend!!!
What kind of RPM's does that turn at 70mph? Growing up my dad had that exact '76, bought new and sold it in '01 and it was still a great bike. Neither of us can remember the RPM's for some reason. Wanted to compare it to the new yamaha 650's of today. I feel like the old ones were faster than the new ones like I have. We could get the '76 over 100 no problem, the new v star won't. The v star is much heavier I assume but the '76 seemed much faster in taking off too.
the old stuff will run forever , im poor so i have always had hand me down stuff, they had 4 wheelers i had 3 wheelers they had new bikes and i had hand me down old stuff,... all in all the old stuff runs better with almost zero maitenance unless you buy a shitty Harley Davidson, thats a nice bike i would love to have one like it in 30 more years if you treat it right it will still run
Hey man. I got one of these in my garage. Mine is an XS750. Not sure on what year it is, i believe its a 1976. Its a pre-1980 I know that. But it needs ALOT of work. As of today Im fixing a leaking oil issue from the oil cooler and then Im gonna put new oil in it and try and start er up again. But Im almost certain the carbs have had it, I think they need rebuilt big time. Iv had it running once in 10 years and it backfired like crazy. Gonna post a video soon.
Those who do shit like that should have their balls chopped. It's amazing how many classic and rare bikes we lose to someone's "artistic input and creativity".

Yamaha junk, there is no way an ancient yamaha twin would start on a first kick, they were always junk as were their triple cylinder 4 strokes, great 2 stroke builders but have yet to build a good 4 stroker including the brit xt500 what a pile of junk.
wow kid you obviously dont know shit my xs750 starts up first kick EVERY time its cold. do you just have bad luck with yamahas because you dont know what the FUCK your doing or saying for that matter?
i am actually gonna remove the electric start on my 80 xs650g special 2, i figure she turns on with one kick or two, and if that doesnt work, do the push start, get enough speed and and pop out the clutch.
Yes, I meant a servicemanual. I can do this "how to ride the bike" - thing, hehe.. :)
But either Haynes or Clymer has the servicemanual for my bike. Maybe the book for the XS 400 is the same as the XS 500? Can´t find anything for my XS 500, 1977 model.
It kind of bothers me that typically for my bike, this is a hard manual to find.
I have aYamaha XS 500, 1977 model, that I´m planning to restore. My problem is that I don´t have the users manual, and without that I´m pretty helpless.
Do you know about a place I can get it? Help would be appreciated!
You don't need a user manual, you need a service manual. Clymer, Haynes, they're both good. They're easy to find online. You can even buy an online version for about 10 bucks, or sometimes they're posted free.
What a beautiful machine. Keep using it. People gotta see these old machines. They were jus' as good as anything being made these days and just as fun.
That was my bike!!! I had one and it's very well engineered!

Neat old bike. My older brother had an '80, and I enjoyed riding it. Take care of it and it'll go 75,000 miles.

Hold onto that bike. Don't ever sell it because some scenester will rip it to shreds to build a bobber or some crappy chopper.
Nice bike.
