This is all-around amazing footage. He's endearingly awkward in the beginning (subbing the guitar, etc.), and I don't think the audience had a CLUE what awesome performance the band would put on next with Ocean Rain. That must've been magical, to see it live. Especially that note he hits at 4:33.
wowww Simply heavenly....!!! Ian its God,and the band are angels around him. If one day i die,i wouldn,t mind come in the kingdom of heaven listen that song. Amazing ian.
Great vocal. Typical of Mac that period. Solo vocals, no backing at all. Saw them live about 30 times between 81 and 87, mostly in Liverpool, where they were peerless. This song always reminded me of Roger Whittaker. Typical of the lacklustre stuff they recorded post 81. Perhaps 2 great tracks on this lp, Crown of Thorns and Silver. Compare with 1st 2 lps, all great tracks apart from Zimbo and Over the Wall. Last 2 lps, the best since 81. Live though, they were up with the gods till 87.
Simply stunning. My first ever gig was the Bunnymen the Oxford Apollo the following year and i'm not sure anyone's ever topped it... There's some great music around still, but anyone this good at the moment? Not too sure.... The 80's may have been crap in many ways but there was some amazing music if you knew where to look...
I remember watching this, I was 17 years old and this was the year I saw them at the Birmingham Odean for the first time. On Sunday I saw them at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, now my total is four. Later versions are classier but somehow this versions rawness encapsulates the time better.
I wish I had noticed this band earlier. I'm 17, and this is just my kind of music; beautiful and british. If it wasn't for Coldplay, I'm not sure if I would've ever heard about them,
ive got to that point in my life when you get bored with the culture you grew up with and go exploring. im loving it, its like being a teenager all over again!
Thank god for footage like this being available on youtube. If you only listen to their albums, you'd never know how special this band was live. Saw Electrifixtion in 95', more people were there to see the dandy warhol and some other band I can't remember who were opening. Anyway, for the eighty or so people who stayed, Mac put on the best live vocal performance I've ever heard. And could do dead on impressions of morrison, sinatra and elvis.
@bighefjeff Excellent point. At the beginning of this video he seems endearingly awkward (subbing the guitar, etc.), so I think the audience, despite whatever song(s) they had heard before, were totally unprepared for this performance. True gem.
Saw them at the Barrowlands in Glasgow in the last concert before Pete D Freitas was killed. It had been delayed for 6 months after Ian broke his leg when he fell off stage in America.
20 odd years ago now but still one of the best gigs i've ever been to. They are such an inspiration.
Saw these in 1984 at Leicester De Montfort Hall.....Utterly amazing......never saw so much dry ice in my life!....McCulloch said only 7 words all night!....."Thanks alot!....Have a safe journey home!"............Will never forget it!....Such a night!
Les is cool as a cucumber. Looks like he's on holiday with his acoustic bass. The strings are out of tune. Makes me wonder if they just weren't used to tuning against a rock band.
This was my senior year in High School and Echo was HUGE to those in the know. They influenced so many bands in the era and of course beyond. I would find it very hard to believe that Morrissey and Marr weren't listening very, very closely.
Sat and watched this at my best friend Dom's house one Friday evening 1983. Mesmerising and powerful to a 15 year old boy. The Tube was the start of the weekend and the most influential music programme of it's time..
the perfect band to call your heroes when you're fourteen....we had good taste! too bad fourteen today is the jonas bros or worse kanye west & taylor swift! NOT perfect or heroic im afraid....ECHO=ICONS
Seems back in the early 80s there was some popularity from late 50s and early 60s rock-a-billy music. Now we seem to be experiencing the same retro comeback of the bohemian sounds of the postpunk period. My youngest daugher who is 10 has a photo of Joy Division on her bedroom wall and they both love Echo and the Bunnymen. I didnt push it on them either, They always come in my room and ask what im listening to. They like Bowie too.
