@1bravenewworld Hi! I believe it's from a documentary about Olga Korbut. They where discussing how Ludmilla was preferred to Olga by the Soviet leaders because of her discipline. You can watch it full at veoh: watch/v427328HP5YGY4S
You can see in her dismount how she twisted ever so slightly and had to kick out with a hopped one-foot landing so as to avoid the front right corner of the falling apparatus striking her. This is far more than just being "too cool to care" - as she bounced off the lower bar she had already perceived the danger and effortlessly adjusted her flight and landing.
Lyudmila Tourescheva - the last of the old-school 'classical' gymnasts (before it became all scrawny 14 yr olds) - and Soviet icon.
As she told in an interview, while performing she already felt the bars were about to collapse. But she decided not to break her performance. When they fell at last, it was no surprise to her, she knew it will happen. Her wonderful composure is not that she didn't look back, but that she continued her performance, KNOWING that bars may fall in any second. It is a miracle they fell only AFTER.
@Beaumain I had kind of wondered myself, just looking at her expression afterward, if she'd had some sense of the equipment being not quite right. Pretty amazing show of poise, indeed!
Do you want to know the definition of "cool?" WATCH THIS VIDEO! Ludmilla Tourischeva is one of my favorite athletes of all time. Skill, strength, style and class...The bars collapse - had it happened 2 seconds earlier she might have been badly hurt - and she doesn't even blink! If only more athletes today - regardless of sport - would emulate her class and grace...
@Natalie9911 A tension adjuster, which is a hook which holds the bars upright and taut, had been straightening out and gave way; and her score was 9.8:)
Lyudmila was the last graceful, elegant, womanlyl perfomer before it came down to pig-tailed pubescents bouncing about killing themselves for ambititious coaches. Gymnastics was curing itself - til the Chinese got away with fielding 12 yr olds
I've seen bars collapse a couple of times - it's a technical problem. It would be quite difficult for anyone to pull them down themselves - you try it.
I don't know that weight per se was an issue--gymnasts were as a rule noticably taller and heavier in those days than has become the norm since the late 80s. Give her credit, I'd say, for being a cool customer and saying in effect, "I completed the routine, judge it for what it was."
cool until you realize how clumsy she was to knock the whole thing over.
