The Brits & French both fought over/with India & had a hell of a time conquering it. @ the time, India was a collection of many princely states both large/small that independently fought/allied with Brit/France vs rival states. One could argue that had India united, they may have been able to fend off the Europeans. (united stand/divided fall. Alas, there was no Indian nationalism back then.
