@joshisazombie It's not actually a ColdAirIntake since it sucks air from within the engine bay, and not from the front (right behind the spoiler). I haven't noticed any improvement in power with the cone air filter (just better sound). Furthermore a mechanic said that it may produce less power than the stock air filter since the stock one took cold air from the front of the car.
@jeebs007 well it looks man. there some CAI on ebay for like 50 bucks that look legit. i dont the diff in an ebay one then a neuspeed or something. its all pipping to me.
@jeebs007 cone are best for turbo cars..cold air doesnt matter as thats what ur intercooler is there for.. the cold air would just get heated by the turbo compressing it :)
Because the air is being redirected into the intake pipe but its not fluttering its just a loud whooosh, like its supposed to sound. In general flutter = not good. It also depends on how much boost you are running, and each turbo behaves differently, i mean life time expectancy.
I also own a 1.8t and the fluttering sound is actually the air not being redirected into the air system, its the air cutting in the opposite direction of the regular flow thats what makes the flutter. I had a bov (which was basically broken) and would not open after letting off the throttle yes it fluttered, sounded cool, but i did notice a loss of power. I upgrade to a stock diverter valve from an audi TT the 225hp version, and the fluttering is no more, it still makes a blow off sound....
my car never fluttered with same filter setup in video or with stock setup. also changed the boost and no flutter. stock boost or 16lbs. k03-S turbo and no muffler. no flutter with change of exhaust either. maybe this guys got a k03 turbo (no "S")
my gti turbo used to sound like this, its when the air thats bein recirc is not gettin recirc, slows u dwn when shifting... mine gives off a nice long pshhhhhhh even tho flutter sounds good, its called compressor surge
Just FYI...Thank is the normal sound of the RBOV. Nothing to worry about. Just one of the things that make the Golf performs the way it does. The sound is the boost returning into the intake. And no it can not hurt your turbo since the extra boost will find the path of least resistance and that is away from the turbo towards your MAS. also helps rid your filter of sand and dust. Another reason you can not use an oiled filter in this intake system. Also the MAS is looking for that pulse of air.
Sorry not sure what your referring to by flutters. But I am sure whatever you are looking for you can find on ebay. Anyway if you are more specific I sure I can help you out OK.
@MasterMech77 What the heck is a MAS? Do you mean MAF sensor? Mass air flow? It is a knackered DV and it won't cause too much damage short term but long term you will reduce the life of the turbo.
Yes Mass Air Flow sensor, I work with vehicles everyday and we (at the shop) refer to them as Mass Air Sensors. Since there is a Air Flow Sensor and that is completely different style of sensor so to simplify things most technicians refer to the newer style MAF sensor as a MAS. Oh and just so you know that most new MK4 VW Golfs with the 1.8t would produce that flutter from the stock DV. It is the reason the factory filter housing has the "sound" chambers built in to it.
The sound chambers in the factory air box are designed to dampen or remove all if not most of the engine noise you hear here with that short ram intake. I personally do not recommend a short ram on the Golf due to the hot air being sucked in from the engine bay. A insulated or long tube air filter that is correctly designed, makes so much more power and is by far better for the turbo in the long run.
Many say that the fluttering is bad for the turbo. I don't know for sure because it also fluttered with the stock air filter, just that you couldn't hear it so loud as with the sport filter. And it did 200k km like that without any damage to the turbo. Nevertheless, I will mount a BOV valve in the near future and see what are the differences. I'll come with feedback :)
blow off dump may cause problems they say not to bother.. just a recerculating dump... but you want ur golf sounding lush as fuck... up too u lol.... de-cat it with a powerflow exhaust .. i like that sound!!!
Buy a new dv, you will get a nice air sound without the fluttering.
You can buy a forge one or the standard bosch one, should do it asap because it's not good for the turbo bearings, and turbos arnt cheap, well their ''cheap'' a few hundred but it's a waste of money to wear the turbo out quicker than to make the turbo last and spend money on more mods.
Fluttering DV alert! Its not releasing air quick enough at part-throttle.
If OEM, change it ASAP.
If it's an aftermarket piston-type, loosen the spring.

The fluttering is bad for the turbo. Air is being forced back against the blades, will wear your turbo out
