  • "Danke für den Turntable Test. Ich hoffe niemand hat seinen Turn-Beuddel vergessen."

  • if someone is reading this, i have a PE turntable from my aunt and am wondering about its value. pristine condition from the 70's . I even have the manual still. Its a PE 2040. ANY info whatsoever would be great. Thinking about trading it in. Will wait to hear a response. thanks

  • @calixa I could use a scan of that manual if you wouldn't mind! I just got a LZ 2020 today but no docs. Thanks!

  • I had a telefunken turntable looking just like that. Great turntable!

  • beautiful sound !!!

  • Pe turntables rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The germans has always been great enginers and developers of technic solutions, and this is not an exception! Very nice song, with the swedish singer Bibi Johns, and, I really love your player, and the very nice quality of the picture and I would really like to have an old nice 78-player; I've built my own but mine is not an enjoyment for the eye. Thanks for this great video! Hälsningar, Falkis

  • Amazing sound & turntable! Even the song! I have played your video a lot of times!

    Greetings from Argentina!

    Sebastián.

  • Good Day

    Macht gut!!

I also have a PE player.

Last model before takeover by DUAL. I have orig manuals, etc. Mint cond. Cost very much.

  • It's like a Dual on steroids. I always wanted one of those. I have a Elac/Miracord 50H which is a fantastic table, although the one I have for the American market was distributed by Benjamin sound and they put a cheezy plastic base on it. Very much at odds with the table itself which is built like a tank. I am sure the German model had a wood one.

  • Kraut rock at it's finest!

  • Sounds great! My dad had the virtually identical PE-2020 model, which also had 16rpm speed, but lacked the much needed cueing lever (the latter item which the "L" model had). Set up with the Empire 888-VE cartridge, it sounded great with LPs and 45s.

  • PE = made in germany ;)

  • Wonderfull old super high quality turntable with mechanic computer brain inside!

  • same here usually 78 are usually scatched up very nice sounding

  • Thanks so much for this vid. Made my day :)

  • Great sound and beautiful turntable!

  • dude, that is the most amazing 78 sound quality ive ever heard

  • This is quite normal for a 50ies shellac which has not been abused with steel needles (only ceramic pick-ups with saphire needles running at "gentle" 8p ;-) ). Except these recordings are mono, they are not worse than vinyl. They almost reach HiFi-quality ...

  • niiiiice man, thats incredible

  • Sounds great given it's a 56 year old shellac pressing.

    Nice turntable too!

  • Excelent sound :O Great video. Thanks

  • Does that turntable have variable speed (aka "pitch")?

  • Of course PLUS a "mechanical computer" that detects the record size by itslef!

    Its called the PE DIAMATIC.

  • You can also use the DENON DL103 with this table sounds VERY VERY good.

I would say thats an ideal combination.

Maybe better (more open) than Shure V15/3

I was astonished how crisp this table sounds.

Well I suggest replacing the old DIN cord with new

RCA jacks low capacity type ( for example SOMMER phono cable)

  • This trule is one of the best sounding tables around,

I compared it to a Thorens TD124 and some other very expensive high end players, its as good and I would even say the bass response of the PE Arm is even better, I used a Shure V15/3 with new original stylus

    "HE"

  • My friend gave me his PE2020. It came with a Shure cartridge and has amazing sound quality. However, the parts that make it an automatic were removed--It only acts as a manual turntable.

I think I may donate my PE2020 soon.

  • beautiful & cool music - how does a 3048 compare in performance? (yours looks cooler imo)

  • Tonearm support / base and tube is alloy not plastic...the nice arm has a stylus detection angle control right on the headshell what makes sense if you use the stacker mechnism for changin records (staple gets higher different angle for stylus needed..)

  • I recommend a SHURE V15/III MM or Philips GP 412/2 for this turntable. especially the Philips super MM 412 makes a very very good job on this table. (It was the top range philips MM of the 70s and was as expensive as the Shure v15/III in germany at 1975

  • PE 2020 really is one of the very rare high end soudn quality automatic players its more sophisticated than any Garrard or Thorens. Maybe a DUAL 1019 comes close,

  • It reminded me of a dual the minute I saw it too..

  • Yeah but I would say that the PE2020 has even slightly better performance than a DUAL 1019 / 1219 / 1229, because the PE´s mechanics are made to unbelievable high standards, it may look a little fat, but especially the Tonearm has some of the best bearings I have ever seen, and the tonearm is medium heavy not heavy its lighter than an SME 3009 and has same good detection quality

  • The audio you hear is mixed from open mic to direct line. The author states this himself in a previous post. At 0.16~0.17 the mix occurs, you can hear the reduction of ambient to direct line feed, it is too obvious.

This turntable is a fine piece of equipment. Very poor handling of record at the end of play...tsk...tsk...tsk.

All around good times though, well done!

    Long Live Great German Engineering!

  • Hallo!

Grüsse aus Brasilien! Ich hoffe dass es ihnen gut geht! I have never had any problem with the Shure styli, but I really don't understand why they discontinued the VN5xMR. It is an excelent stylus! I have a question: Does this record player play records on a stack? How exactly does the disc-sensor (for 12, 10, and 7 inch- records) work? Bt the way, what a superb machine you have! And the shellack you're playing is really groovy!

  • very good.bello.bravo.ciao silvio

  • Hallo,

  • This has really good sound quality. What type of cartridge are you using and what are you playing it through. I have a Dual 1219 changer and I didn't know Dual bought PE. I also have a 1950's Perpetumm changer. They were really unusual and one of kind in their operation. I had to do some tedious adjustments to the mechanism to get the 45 spindle to work properly but it works smoothly now.

  • Hi! It uses a new Shure M78s cartridge. However, I can't recommend it. Two of three were faulty. I also have a M75 with a cheap shellac stylus replica which sounds nice, too. The PE in the Video above is connected to my Revox A78 and recorded directly with the laptop. Not with the microphone ... The 1219 is a veeeeery nice machine! Great! :-)

  • What is the brand of this Turntable

  • "Perpetuum Ebner" or short "PE" ... ;-)

  • Nice thing you've got there! :D

  • Bought one of these in 1972 for 90 USD as a close out just after Dual bought them out.Wish I still had it- very good machine for its' time. One unique feature is the VTA adjustment screw on the headshell, later adopted by Dual.

  • Oh yeah just found it, thats a nicer table than the Dual 701, even if the DUAL is quiter the PE rim drive makes more joy...just test an Elac 50H thats alos nice rim drive, found my in Ebay for just 20 Euros

  • In Sweden we would say pnörrknörtzelig ;)

    (funny and good)

  • Oh yes Dual 701 is a very nice DD table, but dont forget the better "bass" and voice playback of top class rim drive players as Dual 1019 and PE2020, they have a very special "drive" in their lower frequencies that make my feet dancing.

  • Why dont you use it for modern hifi records, its just too good for only playing mono vintage normalgroove records ;)

Try a new Ortfofon Vinylmaster Red ;)

  • Because I have a Dual 701 for vinyl which has a death-silent drive and a superior tonearm. Maybe the best turntable ever built in Germany ... However, the PE2020 is more fun. ;-)

  • You can compare this excellent turntable to any Thorens TD124 and Garrard 301...its xxxxl well built

  • Listen to the nice mechanical CLACK sound of the automatic mechanism, its some very special sound of best old german percision mechnics ;) My old Mercedes S class from 1970 did souch a sound when aircondition switched on and off :))

  • Its not an ordinary "el cheapo" record changer...this PE2020 was very expensive!

it has a kind of analogue mechnical computer installed that changes speed and record sice without touching the player...no other changer can do that. ;) Its a very silent idler drive mechanism, better than some very expensive Garrard 301. This PE has an idler wheel made from silicone rubber, it wont get a flat spot, even after 40 years of storage.

    NICE MACHINE ;)

  • This turntable really has a fine Sound, I had several of these units, its a rare but very vey heavy and solid german masterpiece.

  • Excellent sound from a 78! Is it pressed on shellac or vinyl?

  • OK, I see you mention "schellack" at the beginning of the video. :-)

  • Yes, it's the shellac record you see in the video. The sound however was recorded seperately and mixed into the video afterwards. But it's the same player and disc.

  • Wow automatic ! Is that automatic thing rate for vintage?

  • No, of course not. But it is the best turntable of Perpetuum Ebner ever built, it's heavy, it's nice, performing great and it is rare. So I think it IS vintage, VERY vintage. However, the PE-automatic is probably the best I have ever seen. ...

  • I would love to listen to some German BAVARIAN VOLKSMUSIC on this player.:)

  • Back in the late 60´s this PE2020 was a true reference stereo turntable used by some of the most important music reviewers in Germany and France for listening to Philips and Decca pre series reference records. Watch some vintage FonoForum magazines between 1969 and 1972, you will see what I mean. :)

  • The PE2020 has a kind of a mechanical computer that automatially detects the record size and even the record speed.

    This is called PE DIAMATIC.

You can even stack differenr records on the changer and it will allways detect the right

record size and speed. A true mechanical wonder. I repaired some of these german jewels--never ever seen something like this!

    Forget Japanese paper turntable ;)

  • In fact this PE 2020 top of the line turntable is made in Western Germany (!) between 1968 and 1972 and is considered to be even more sophisticated than any DUAL luxury turntable.

Anybody who ever listens to this german fine-mechanical masterpiece will notice its incredible quality thats just like an old Mercedes Benz of the 60s.

Great sound, listen to the quiet operation of the mechanics! True German master-engineering!

  • This is the very best idler drive luxury turntable ever made in Europe.

Its quiter, heavier and sounds more detailed than any Thorens TD124 or Garrard 301.

  • The player and the Music sucks :-(
