  • hey nutn, going with the Esse junlas instead.... it costs a bit more but i am hoping it wont have the breakae issues of the RTAK II

  • i have that knife but how do I take care of it , do i need to do what HE SAYS, like spraying the blade with WD40, washing it underwater, using a degreaser, and oiling up the blade?

  • There are at least 4 videos on here of these breaking. I am getting me an ESSAY HOONGLASS!

  • Nutn/veri love all the reviews do u or can u make a review for top high value fixed blade knifes?

  • hello, thank you for the review. it is best this or cold steel kukri in wood cutting?

  • 1:04 i lol'ed...

  • hey nutn and veri could you get the esee junglas review out before christmas thanks for all the hard work and time. :)

  • Hey nutn, you should check out some of Eric fehrmans knives. Less about the knife, and more the handle. He actually makes micarta scales for his knives, but puts a Kraton lining between the bland the scales to give it the durability of micarta, and shock absorbency of kraton

  • Chopping watermelon gauranteed.

  • What angle do you sharpen your RTAK II to?

Anybody know what the factory angle is?

Anybody ever sharpened their RTAK II on an Edge Pro?

  • Had my RAT-7 bend like that in a piece of birch, It kinda scered me when i noticed it. When I got it out of the birch piece it bent back straight. The steel hawe not taken anny damage by it and it has been used alott afterwards without anny more bending.

  • This or Buck Hoodlum?

  • @marksmanman96 He also has a vid for the hoodlum but finds the RTAK better for heavy chopping, If still in doubt buy both lol!

  • K now watch the videos where people end up breaking these knives in half while using them.

  • Hey NutnFancy, what do you sharpen your survival blades with when you need too?

  • Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri

  • dear nutnfancy what is a really good survival knife thats under 100 dollars besides the ontario rtak

  • How much money is the coldsteel tracker, and would you say that it is better than the Rtak ii or not?

  • @Balgore8 Whats a coldsteel Tracker... do you mean ''Trailmaster?''... if so, lowest I could find is about $125-$130

  • rtac v hoodlum. face off

  • Hello!

What would you consider a good price for this blade? I found it around here (in Germany) for around 175€ (about 250$ right now) which seems real high to me.

    greetings

  • What do you think of the best steel for all around survival/tactical use knives ? Thanks nutnfancy .. ! and of course Veri :)

  • @zarnitintunzanyzack Ok. I asked Nutn and he said that a good carbon steel is best if you can take care of it. 1095 or 5160 work well. If its for a wet environment, a laminated stainless steel is best like Cold Steel San Mai 3 or Falkniven.

  • @nutnfancy The new models are 5160 steel

  • Any chance you could do a review on the TOPS Anaconda 7B. It is another design by Ron Hood, and bears the Hoodswoods logo.

  • Hey nutn, didn't you have a video about the ESEE Junglas? Where'd it go, I can't find it anywhere :(

  • this or the junglas

  • would you recommend the rtak II or the esee junglas?

  • Is the SK-5 steel the same as 1095? The Trailmasters I've seen go for about a hundred and fifty and are made from SK-5, which is a bit expensive. They're built like brick outhouses though.

  • What happened to the Esee Junglas review??? Why is it "Private"??

  • @Schony5 The entire Esee company were being so incredibly douchey to Nutn both in real life and in their forum that they made even Lynn C. Thompson look like a saint (though I personally have no problem with Lynn). Even worse, most of the attacks came AFTER Nutn's positive review of the Junglas. I think Nutn just now relegates Esee products to the same category of products out of Iran or N-Korea that he won't review. Such irrational stupidity and rudeness does not deserve promotion.

  • @Fry790 thanks for the heads up man, the heck with them then. I'll stick with the Ontario in that case!! I watched the review on the Junglas and it was a good review I don't understand what there problem is. Now it's time for me to buy and I'll be going with the RTAK II. Thanks! :-)

  • HAVE YOU SEEN THE BUSSE KNIFE? NUTNFANCY

  • Do I see a tattoo on nutn's left hand???

  • do a review of the busse battle mistress please.

  • 30.5 ounces?! I think the CS Kukri is only 22! Hows that possible?

  • @aTellerOfTruths

    Simple, thin metal.

  • Hey nutn I've seen a few vids. On youtube that this knife has failed on them? And u kinda not abuse but use the knife like crazy and they said the were just choppingg batong or just clearing brush? Y do u think?

  • As a kid I use to do a lot of tree cutting in my parents yard. Mostly pine tress, cedars, birch, persimmon, willows and the like typically found in New Jersey. Needless to say I'd end my day washing tree sap off my hands and out of my hair with everything from Ajax to kerosene. Then a few years ago I stumbled upon using cedar oil (available at health food stores) and low and behold "INSTANT SAP BE GONE". It dissolves the tree sap instantly. I don't know if it works on every tree sap though.

  • last message got flagged as spam. Not sure why, maybe my accidental double post. At least that is all I can think of, I've seen comments asking for choices over which knife to buy, a this versus that type thing. just wanted input on whether this knife or the Laredo Bowie would be a better buy. Thanks

  • @pist0lpete02 I don't know why some messages get marked as spam, it has baffled me for quite a while. Nutn says that the RTAKll is better for survival uses...its coated, and the Laredo Bowie is raw steel. Hope that helps. -- Veri

  • Think this is a good question? I hold your opinion highly. So. With this blade, would you go plain or serrated blade?

  • @weaponstroopusaf Plain, the uses this knife will be put through its not needed.

  • I want a BK 9 (Burger) please!

    Great joke :D

  • @o0haltsMaul No, bad

  • @ToddIngram1000 Tastes are different

  • this or the trail master

  • I think that the frank bowie knife is way better for your money the frank bowie knife is the way to go

  • why dont you duracoat the handle? :3

  • PS the Ontario sp 8 "machete with the Massive .25 thick blade and roughly 9 inch blade immediately finished the job on this touch peace of oak. The Temperature was 60 degrees in my Garage. The Sp8 is an amazing amazing chopping machine. I sent mine to John Fitzen at Razors Edge to put on a full flat grind and take off the useless Saw top that it comes with. I still stick with Ontario!

  • Okay, Your Reviews are great! With that said. On my 2nd use my Rtak Broke in 3 pieces while hitting into a knot in Oak while batonning wood in my Garage. This "was" my Favorite Knife with that said from now on ANY Survival Big Chopper will be .25 inch not anything less. Ontario is GREAT and refunding me with an SP52 Chopper with .25 blade thickness. I wish they would put .25 inch blade on this one.

  • I have an RTAK 2 Micarta Handle with hardware and sheath for sale on Z190490965719 is the item number on eeeee bbb aaa yyyy

  • I would like to buy it with serrations?

    What do You think?

  • @darknuke96 I personally hate serrations, but they might make it someday...

  • This is a Knife with the capital K!!!

    I MUST get it!!!!!!!!

  • @ florida snookhunter. Thanks man.

  • shoo goo is awsome stuff thousands of usages. I carry that the small tubes with me when I go camping. tent sealant, clothing repairs, super strong bonding glue. Ive worn through the coating on 550 cord in small spots and smeared some goop on the wear spots let it dry, good to go.

  • should i get this or the cold steel trail master?

  • Because if your recommendation I purchased one. How do you or anyother TNP'ers carry this knife. On your side, In a backpack. Let me know.

  • @krubbor like the sheath for the knife in the vid I custom make sheaths so they can be used with MOLLE attachments. I use zipties and attach my knive on the side of my backpack....

  • I would buy the Marine raider, but it's a lot like my USMC Ka-Bar, also made of 1095.

  • @85wifebeater Nutn says this one...has full flat grind, chops a bit better, stronger tip, and can get a great Kydex sheath for it. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy Howdy, I am new to being a member of the youtube community but have been watching your videos for quite some time. They are helpful and informative to say the least. Was wondering which you would recommend over the other. Cold Steel's Laredo Bowie or the Ontario RTAK II. Thanks, enjoy the videos very much.

  • How good will that plastic insert in the sleeve hold up against the knife comming in and out of it? can the knife cut threw it eventually? thank you

  • @jackrock1313 Plastic insert will hold up well. However it has to be heat formed for better retention.

  • @nutnfancy Hey Nutn (or Veri as the case may be), that sheath mod is a great idea. Still, I thought I'd add that you can get a custom Kydex sheath from Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop (I am not affiliated!) They're a bit pricey, but look nice (I don't own one, but they seem to get positive reviews in the forums).

Thanks for the great vids, keep it up!

  • today i ordered ESSE Junglas (with awesome kydex sheath) and I hope it is better choice than RTAK II/ Trail master.

one thing I dislike on Junglas is that the thin blade.

  • anxiously waiting on your review on the esee junglas...

i'd really appresiate if you managed to do it this year. i'm leaving for the military in january

  • You should go to a knife company and design your ownn knife there would be no need for another knife!

  • Well, I've done some research so I can answer my own question for me and you as well: The only two differences I can see, besides the massive price gap, are that the Junglas has a nice Kydex-like (super expensive IMO) sheath and a high saber grind as apposed to the FFG on the Ontario. Other differences are seem to be cosmetic. I love the look of the white/grey micarta scales and the sheath on the ESEE but I love the price of the RTAK II. I suppose the knife is the most important part. Hmmmmm

  • Would you consider this the same thing as the ESEE Junglas?

  • I just bought this knife for $105. I really enjoyed the blade and it is pretty sharp straight out of the box. The knife is getting a custom made kydex sheath for it. The sheath that it comes with absorbs alot of water and keeps the blade rather loose.

  • Hey, would you recommend the RTAK-II or the Becker BK9?? I love your videos, and would appreciate addvice. Thanks

  • i just made a solid steel knife with a micarta handle that is a little less than 1/4" thick and i heat treated it and its amazing. 13" long and only 15.5 ounces!

  • Hey Nutn, good news brother. Chestnut Ridge has Kydex sheaths for the RTAK II as well as others like the RD7. OD green Kydex for like $45? if I recall correctly. I just picked this blade up with the Kydex and I love it!! Thanks for the review.

  • Haha, the way he held it, "thumpin on it hard.... and getting noodled". 1:05

    Thumbs up if you Rofl'ed

  • Hey nutn, just noticed something, and I thought I'd let you / veri know. The RTAK II is actually 3/16'' thick , not 1/4'' thick like you say in your video. I've checked multiple sources, and all say 3/16" unless they are citing your video's description. Anyway, keep up the good work!

  • @Wingsfan7 Ooo thanks for the heads up, Wings! -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy you're most welcome! :)

  • This knife breaks easy

  • I believe the RTAK II has a 3/16" blade, which is the only thing holding me back from purchasing it. Great video though!

  • was that blood on the logo?

  • ESEE knives (formerly RAT knives) manufactures this same knife (RAT and Ontario had a partnership for a few years where they shared designs etc). Anyways, their model is called the Junglas Machete and comes with a Kydex sheath. Price is about the same.

  • Found clearance sale under 40 bucks shipped. Not sure stock levels hopefully not out but put in order for Three of them. ESEE Junglas should be here tomorrow and thinking maybe the Kydex sheath will work with the RTAK II also, if so will post. If it works and ESEE sells them separate would be a good addition for this blade. Later dude.

  • which is better the ontario rtak ii or the cold steel trailmaster sk5?

  • @TH3aznEmperor

    What is "better" to you?

Knives are a very subjective subject. I might love what you hate. You might love what I hate. What works for me may not work for you.

So on and so forth. :) It's best if you just get out there and try some different knives out!

  • Hello

    I live in Southern California

Would I have to worry about rust maintenance????

  • haha funny burger joke

  • what knife did bugetnuster end up deciding on? for his personal use?

  • Just got my RTAK in today and cant wait to get it out and use it. It also fits perfect on the side of my Maxpedition Falcon 2 pack.

  • got the rtak because of your review (proof testing). been beatin on it for 'bout 3 months now. best campin knife available. but, i clean my knife after every other trip. been usin wd-40 no problem. but last time i used CRC Silicone spray. CRC melts the epoxy coating on the blade:( so i finished strippin the crinkle coat off with the CRC spray and a strait razor. looks nice....and still doesnt rust:) justa f.y.i.

  • Seems like ESEE re-defined this knife in their own brand, called the "Junglas", its seems to be almost same specs. Several ounces lighter, 1/16" thinner, but comes with a Kydex sheath! Have you had any experience with this revamp?

I imagine this would have the ESEE "no questions asked" replacement policy? If so, people are going to beat the hell out of the Junglas.

  • what is rats website url

  • I just got my RTAK II today. I've been impressed with this blade since I watched Firemaking in Snow last summer. This is my first survival blade (it's true, I'm a youngin') and I was wondering if you had any tips for care and cleaning? Thanks, and keep up the good work Nutn!!!

  • this is next on my list of knives to get i already have the kabar produced becker bk9 and i am a little unhappy with the edge it came with and sheath so im going to send it to john at razors edge and heave it reprofiled like nutnfancy and then send it to have a custom kydex sheath made, probably going to do that to the rtak-II as well

  • If you really want a better sheath, you can buy sheets of kydex, heat them, and form them around the knife. If you watch a video on how to do it or read an article online like I have, it's really simple. Thx for the great vids.

  • Love this vid, man im really intersted in buyin a big survival knife cause my biggest one is the srk. What do your recommend the rtak2 or the cs recon scout?

  • Awsome Knife!!! Just got one, already batoned tons of logs with it and cut down small trees lol Bad Ass Knife!!!!! Love it! Hey man you should do a review on FN Scar 16s!!

  • sweet bass on the intro

  • i have a question i see some websites sell the rtak ii somewhat cheaper than others, but i'm worried do the websites that sell the knife amazingly cheap sell second factory defect knives?

  • I'm still trying to decide between a Rtak II, or the Becker BK9

  • @CarnageX people say that the kabar bk9 too thin spine. so ontario is the way to go.

  • There is now excuse for any knife that cost more then 50 bucks to not have a riveted Kydex sheath.. Its super easy to work with, easy to set up for mass production, and the material is cheap in bulk rolls... Its like those people who shell out 900 dollars for a Kimber and then cheap out and buy a $10 nylon holster for it..

  • Got mine a few weeks ago for $75.00. I love this thing.

  • MOLLE attachments can be used on MOLLE-compatible rucks, not just LBE/LBV. If backpacking, I would most likely attach the sheath to the outside of my pack using the MOLLE system.

  • What do u prefer for the bush this blade, or the RAT 7?

  • @L1NG4N It depends on the tasks you'l be doing. Get the Rat 7 first, then if necessary buy the RTAK II

  • I Found One For $60.00 At Smoky Mountain Knife Works

  • Hey i think it would be cool if u did a reveiw on the sog jungle primitive. It looks like and interesting knife that might rival this one.(Its bit flashy tho) Keep up the good work!

  • @mach2michael no the jungle primitive does not rival this just to be honest the jungle primitive is machete and uncomfortable ive used and it literally doesnt do half of what this does

  • Just an update to let you know I got my RTAK II's from that insane deal you posted a week or so ago... couldn't believe it was real, but here I have two for nearly the price of one, thanks to the TNPer who hooked us up!

  • I second that!! I couldn't believe I was getting essentially one for free! I bought two as well, one for me and one for the wife!

  • like this knife a lot. just getting in to knifes. have a lot of axe use under my belt.

  • AS of 3/9/10 SMNW has the Rtak-II AGAIN for $70 deliverd!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maybe a Hunter Honer sharpener review to show folks how to maintain their blades.

  • this knife chipped yesterday in 1+ celcius, chopping on a dead dry pine tree, this has to be some kind of production fault? its like a circle of the blade was punched out by a machine

  • @zlacc hey that stinks man, can you give us an update on the knife? did ontario replace it? How bout some pics

  • cant seem to link to the photos so i try this way: profile(dot)imageshack(dot)us/user/zlacc

  • @imtheomegaman the knife is modifyed (paint removed) so I havent contacted them

  • Just got mine. Now if I can just sneak it by the wife...

  • just got this for 59.99 (69.99 shipped) on smokey mountain knife works

  • Me too. Thanks for the tweet, nutn.

  • Me three, thanks for the tip guys!

  • @Electromanifestation when i checked it was $120??

  • @no1livez4evr That was 8 months ago and it was the non serrated version. They most likely changed the price. I would check yourcornerstore or just look around.

  • @Electromanifestation ok thanks btw i like the plain edge

  • @no1livez4evr Comment was 9 months ago........

  • @Electromanifestation Very affordable...

  • TNP, help me! Here I am in Feb of 2010. I am totally locked over 2 knives and need advice. This knife will never be deployed to a combat zone so main concerns are survival tasks and hike-ability. LOVE the RTAK for it's proven reliability (and really dig its "second kind of cool"). The CS Recon Scout has the practical advantage of a kydex-ish sheath and weighs half as much (but the RTAK is so sweet!). I could sure use some perspective now that these knives cost the same (~$110). Thanks.

  • @LuckyLambikins hay man i would go with the RTAK i like the looks and i like ontario. but get which one you like the most otherwise it wont get used.

  • rtak is on sale 69.99 shipped at smokey mountain knife works

  • I had my local knife shop order me one in Dec, I finally went to pick it up today. I was impressed with its quality but not impressed with the sheath. I'll be putting it through the paces in the coming weeks. Im excited. Thanks from North Idaho to Nutnfancy

  • I have a recon scout by cold steel. I am curious which would you prefer the RTAK II or the Recon Scout

  • I am merciless on my RTAK-2, use a small sledge to pound it through firewood. It looks rough but is still solid and sharp. Too bad Ontario had to drop it. The modern equivalent is RAT's new Junglas.

  • Is RAT cutlery the same thing as Ontario?

  • No... the guys behind RAT are the originals who worked with Ontario... now RAT are their own group... though for legal reasons Ontario fought for the right to use and keep using RAT name.

  • and RAT Cutlery is now ESEE... somewhat confusing.

  • Cold Steel San Mai III Trail Master knife Md: 16JSM

Wow, that is one badass knife. I want one.

  • I just got this for like: $120.00 off Amazon. I'll need out here in the Sierra foothills. I hope it fares well.

  • Chai - would love to hear back whether you're happy with it or not -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • @nutnfancy Ok...10 months gone by...the knife just holds up. It's tough, strong and holds an awesome edge. I love it. I think the sheath could have been a little better, but it's sufficient. I love the handle on this thing too. I have owned many, many knives and this one is my favorite.

  • I am so hype. Just brought mine. Now to take care of it. You have been a treasure of info.

  • Congrats, that's a beautiful knife. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • just got my RTAK II nice thanks TNP!!!

just a osome blade, use it too process wood for my pocket folding wood stove

i put mace in my RTAK sheath pocket

  • how would the nuclear meltdown fusion battle mistress compare?

  • @zlacc Battle Mistress would be better. But then again it is alot more money.

  • who is the best among the two? I've no audio

  • This really is one of the most functional large survival knifes available. Until you get it in hand it's hard to appreciate the balance and feel of hte blade. It's a combo between a chopper and a machette.

  • Hey what is your guys opinion on 5160 steel that ontario uses?

  • Kershaw Outcast is NOT full tang (despite being advertised as such) and also comes with a crooked grind. I made a mistake when i bought it. Major disappointment!!!

  • Great helpful reviews , could you please tell me what you would choose between the ratk II or the cold steel sk5 or san mai trailmaster

    cheers

  • No contest, at least for making firewood. The RTAK-2 can be pounded on anywhere - blade or handle - and show no damage. The Trail Master has a rubber handle and a guard which gets in the way. And will be damaged.

I don't think you can find SK5 anymore anyway.

And hurry if you want an RTAK-2, they were discontinued awhile back. Still some new ones online. Try "soonerstateknives". But hurry, they're disappearing fast.

  • What can u tell me about the Kershaw Outcast???????

  • I received this blade today and I am thoroughly impressed! What a massive chunk of steel!! Great attention to detail as well. I almost hate to thrash on this blade because it is so darn pretty but... Headin to the mountains this weekend and a guy needs a fire up there. :-)

  • I recently purchased one as well.......gotta love it.

  • i just ordered a rat rc3 cant wait

  • That's gotta be a good blade! But what is that green crap covering the blade?

  • it's the finish dumbass

  • this is an exterimly badass knife!!! tough as hell! check out these videos "Ontario RTAK II Destruction Test part1"

  • luve this knife!

  • The Molle attachment would be nice on a molle leg rig :D

  • Compliment Good knives!

  • also some guys just tend to like smaller blades rather than large ones, i am not one of those guys lol i love my large bowie blades!!!!

  • I'd love to see someone actually make snow with this knife, hahaha!

  • It probably would :p

  • get ready for the rc 10 comin soon ive seen pics

  • Hey nutnfancy, If you can get ahold of one, I'd love to see a review of the mercworx sniper. Keep up the great reviews!

  • Did you happen to actually WATCH the video where he and Bugget Nuster downed a tree and then batoned through all of that wood? Yeah why don't you go watch that hmm? Keep in mind this review is AFTER he did that and it still looks pretty good to me.

  • Regardless of price, would you buy the Ontario RTAKII, RAT RC-6 or the Ontario RAT-7 nuntnfancy?

  • RAT RC 6: reliability

  • That is what I was thinking too.

  • None of the three is any less reliable than the others.
