On this date.... 3/2/11.... it finally clicked. I said "Am I the same girl". It's like figuring out and Algebraic equation, lol. Trust me......

  • I love this song. The remakes are pretty good but this is the OG best!

  • Never knew she was married to Eugene Records and I didn't know he co-wrote this.Information is power. Thanks Xpinger!!

  • @Xpinger Who did the the arrangements and instrumemtals for this?

  • Love Barbara's voice. I wish they would have released this first and then simply did an instrumental of the track under Barbara's name and song title - as many B-sides have done over the years, instead of releasing the instrumental under a different title and band name...... but either way, the music and the vocals are superb

  • Capolavoro!!!!

  • so this is what mmc got this from.

  • Great soul singing! Thanks Xpinger, for bringing me aboard! Best Always, Alvin

  • Man this sounds like a money Hip Hop Track...I think I'll use it...anybody got Barbara's number? lol

  • I really like how Joss Stone sampled Soulful Strut in Don't Cha Wanna Ride. It's a great modern twist on a classic song.

  • check for another nice version : Am I the same guy by ORLANDO .

  • Swing Out Sister, Corinne sings it beautifully, I like both versions,.

  • did she really record the vocals? hmmm someone please prove it

  • dude, she wrote the song!!!!!

  • @weirdwallee

I did a google on this and she is the first to sing the song. I am not sure if she wrote it but she did cut the song first.

Young Holt Unlimited bypassed her and it caused allot of trouble. or try wiklopedia.

Hopefully I didn't misspell too much here.

  • What are you talking about prove it?, stupid question!, do you know anything about her?, no thought not

  • Why don't you DISPROVE IT: stubbyguy? Dusty Springfield re-did this song and it a hit in England shortly after Barbara Acklin, but Barbara Acklin is the original Artiste...nuff said...Bless up!

  • Pete Rock / C.L Smooth-One in a million

  • Great bass line and a nice arrangement. Wonderful vocals.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • This is an old KTTR favorite for sure.

If that station had a theme song during the 60's The Young Holt Unlimited's Soulful Sturt was it. Now reading this I see what happned. Yes Barbara is the origional..

  • Lol Joss Stone totally ripped this beat of this lovely nothern soul.

  • Comment removed

  • is there listed lyrics?

  • cracking record the dusty springfield version is really good great tune !!

  • I'm going to be a bit of a boring anorak here. Barbara Acklin & Young Holt not only shared this track but also "Loves Makes A Woman". In the UK MCA released Barbaras' Love Makes a Woman (MU 1038) then 'Young Holts Soulful Strut (MU 1053), then Barbaras' Am I the Same Girl (MU 1071) then Young Holts Love Makes a Woman (MU 1159). Make of that what you will!

  • Great song!!!

  • Awesome video! really great!

  • She's so lovely!

  • The instrumental version is called "Soulful Strut" for those asking.

  • Hello my friend, beautiful music, I'm from Brazil and here danced in a rhythm called by samba rock music this is a classic, played only the instrumental, you would not have this version, only instrumental? thanks and a hug

  • watch?v=R4_r-x9MOYU

  • thanks my friend...

  • @corujawilton The instrumental is called "Soulful Strut" and it is lovely.

  • @corujawilton Its called "Soulful Strut" by Young Holt Unlimited.

  • instrumental is much better, then u can focus your ears on the nice instruments; piano, drum, bass, trumpet, , the groove!!

    but she can sing!

  • whoa this is almost the same music as Together by the Intruders aint it?? which came first? sorry I'm a 20 year old youngan who loves this music but wasn't really raised on it haha.

  • Intruders 1967, this 1968 and released 1969

  • cool thanks.

  • @4NrAGS he ive found about this song this week and ..............together by the intruders ...coincedince ??

    those two songs ill !!!!

  • This is far and away the best version of a great song.

    What a sweet voice.

  • I had read somewhere that THIS VERSION was actually recorded first, then the vocals were taken out, and that version became the Bigger hit-

  • Its a shame this song only charted at #79, while the instrumental version (called Soulful Strut) went all the way to #3.

  • The same thing happened to Cliff Nobles and Co.

whose vocal song "Love Is Alright" didn't chart(AFAIK anyhow), but then his vocals were removed for the "B" side of the record, and the song was retitled "The Horse" and became a GIANT hit. As with Ms. Acklin, I have a hunch this caused irritation for Cliff.

  • It might be a shame, and I'm sure Barb was not happy about it, but I like the instrumental better. Statistically, it appears I am not alone.

  • Oh yeah, the instrumental version is definitely better, but the point I was trying to make is, both versions should have been equally successful-

  • I remember Grover Washington doing this

  • This is a good song

  • Oh My! This is soulful !

  • A beautiful song. I'm sure Dusty Springfield & Swing out Sister recorded it because they loved it too, but the original is the best.

  • Dusty did do this--it's included in her Anthology. It's something to hear!

  • hello all, My family says thanks for the love!

  • Well, hopefully you can hear her through me one day soon. I do sing and am workin on something for the UK as we speak. maybe we will meet one day. Are you in the US or Uk?

  • You should upload it here for us. Really, they just don't make music like this anymore.

  • In England. It would be great if you sing as well -theres no-one quite like her on the current scene

  • Hey Barbara Acklin Jnr. Your mum was a great singer and a great songwriter. I have a lot of her tracks and she has a lovely timbre in her voice-and her co-writing of Have You Seen Her and Oh Girl remain a testament to her songwriting skills. I wish I had been able to see her.

  • amazing music!

  • This makes remember my ex girlfriend Cleusa. Oh! How I miss her...Please come back to me right now...Pleeeaaasssee! I still love you my pretty blondie.

  • Hey Barbara Acklin Jr. I Just Remembered The Swing Out sisters Version And Looked It Up. I Thought That This Song Was A remake And Low & behold Here I Am. Your Moms version Was Three Times Better Than The Remake. I Empathize With You. Thanks You Tube. you Made A hawaiian happy. d(*o*)b

  • original always the best

  • Great. I prefer the Dusty Springfield version though.

  • very underrated artist, would be a huge star today, she still is to me,Brunswick is up there with Motown in my book

  • listen I have your moms (a place in the sun LP) on my turntables chopping up some of her songs and I love her voice...I think she was very underrated

  • what happened to" i.ll bake me a man" a great song too

  • Hey BarbaraAcklinJr,

    Your mother WAS GREAT!

  • But may I add, there are very few times where a remake will be better than the original. In this case, Am I the Same Girl, beats them all: HANDS DOWN! Mommies voice has the purity and sweetness most only dream about. I will soon hold auditions for someone to portray her in a play Im penning about her life. Stay tuned. They will be held in Chicago.

  • true true - and good luck!

  • Well BA Jr. for the longest time, I thought

that Swing Out Sister had created "Am I The Same Girl",the lyrics anyway, when they wanted to cover "The Soulful Strut"

I never knew, until a few years ago that the song "always" had lyrics, and that "Soulful Strut" was merely the backing track of your Mom's original.

I like all three versions, but I think your mom's versions is the best

  • @barbaraAcklinJr Do you remember a Gary Lee who had a show on WLS called Animal Story's. He is manager of KUKU FM. Willow Springs Mo. real cool guy loves oldies. Most of us remember the Young Holt Unlimited song but after reading up on this posted it to my facebook page. I like your mom's the best.

  • @barbaraAcklinJr Your mom had one of the best voices of that period, and that's saying a lot! I hope to see a depiction of her life someday. Good luck!

  • @barbaraAcklinJr

    don´t worry...your mom is the best...forever!

  • Hello All, everynow and then when Im feeling down and missing my mother to the extreme, I go to this site and read the comments about her music, talent, etc. Its interesting how people feel. Some good and some not so good comments. I welcome all comments, because it lets me know that people are still thinking and loving on her. She was a beautiful, talented writer, vocalist, performer extrordinare.I have followed in her footsteps and am grateful to pops(Eugene)for what he brought to our lives

  • Hey Barbara! I remember this song from the 60´s!

I write from Germany and hear it on BBC England.

the song was and is still great like your mother!

  • God this song reminds me of my best friend in my entire life. I really do love this song!

  • wow i thought swing out sister had put the lyrics to this tune.... barbara is good. but i still like swing out sister better

  • i love this....

  • Eugene Record and Barbara Acklin were married they did a lot of song writing

  • Some of Record's co-compositions from 1971 were credited at one point to a "Eugene Acklin," because the songs were published by an ASCAP-licensed company (Hog Music) and Record was signed to BMI. After the songs were switched to the BMI publisher (Julio-Brian), Record's co-writers were credited for the first time, none of them Ms. Acklin: "Yes I'm Ready (If I Don't Get to Go)," with Reve' Gipson; and "We Are Neighbors," with Carl Davis.

  • Barbara Acklin had such a beautiful voice and a octave range out of this world.

  • Giving Minnie Riperton and Mariah Carey the bone for their teeth to chew on, I'll say.

  • Actually Minnie and Barbara were best friends in Chicago

  • Eugene Record of The Chi-Lites wrote this song and Barbara Acklin co-wrote "Have You Seen Her" and "A Letter to Myself(Write A Letter)" by The Chi-Lites. She also sung background vocals on various artists songs before becoming a solo artist.

  • Is it me, or is this a great song to hit blow in the bathroom with a cute ass girl !

  • Hell yeah.

  • I was just talking about this track and its history with a music friend. He just discovered the singing trio, Love Unlimited, 1974 vocal single, Love's Theme, that was vastly vastly overshadowed by the huge global success of the instrumental-only #1 hit version by the Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Was that music history repeating itself?

  • Only one difference: The music backing track for Love Unlimited's vocal version was a different recording from the better-known instrumental. Their recording was from within the same sessions as Barry White's own "Can't Get Enough" LP, which featured a re-recording (with new instrumentation) of his old "Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It," which had previously been done twice: by Smoke (in 1971) and Love Unlimited (in 1973).

  • barbara acklin's husband wrote this song for her

  • Love Barbara's vocal version best of all. Don't quite understand why Brunswick couldn't have released instrumental and vocal singles, spaced apart in time; look how it worked for Hugh Masekela and the Friends of Distinction with "Grazin' in the Grass".

  • Beautiful! 5 stars and favorited!

  • Hmmm Young & Holt's "Soulful Strut" Will never be the same after hearing her story!

  • So was "Soulful Strut" intended as the "flip side" originally, but radio Dj's instead turned the record over and played the instrumental side, making it the main song instead?

  • Awesome song, and interresting info about the song too!!

  • This is the greatest record of all time.

  • I think The Swing Out Sister version is good but the original defintely tops it for me. Barbara Acklin's vocal is practically unbeatable really.

  • This is the best version by a mile. Swing Out Sister came a decent second - Dusty Springfield a distant third.

  • The Swing Out Sister version is much better!!

    Swing Out Sister rules!!

  • This version still stands as the best.Barbara Acklin was a great, and under-rated, singer and songwriter -co-writer of Have you Seen Her, Oh Girl and others. It should have been a huge hit at the time for her.

  • What surprises us even today is that, all the variations and covers of this song, sung and played by 'instruments only', Acklin, Springfield and SingOutSister have the same musical arrangement. Those of rhythm, brasses, chorus of music parts and other arrangement are almost completely the same to its original, which was released without vocaling.

Who was the first (i.e. original) arranger?

  • barbara's version is the original and by far the dogs bollocks.... there is no substitute

    c'mon the babs.....luv ya

  • 2 Live crew used this sample!

  • Session keyboardist Floyd Morris was the pianist on Am I The Same Girl/Soulful Strut. Young/Holt were not on the recording. The label released it as Soulful Strut under YHU because they were already known for instrumentals. And yes - this was a bone of contention for Barbara but toward the end of her life she was happy that folks in the UK remembered Am I The Same Girl and she loved Swing Out Sister's version (BTW - I served as Brunswick's reissue coordinator/researcher from 1995 through 2002)

  • I'm so glad Barbara like the Swing Out Sister version. Swing Out Sister is my favorite group! I just found a Barbara Acklin "Love Makes A Woman" lp. She is also has a nice voice...I also have the "Soulful Strut" lp also. Vinyl sounds much better than cd!!

  • why don't you stop and look me over...am i the same girl, you use to know...i'm the one you want!!!! good god almighty, it doesn't get much better than this! truly truly off the hook!

  • original for me by a whisker :) ktf

  • No. This is clearly the better version. From the first notes of her voice, Barbara is the better singer of this tune. Dusty Springfield's version is a close second.

  • Barbara Acklin runs rings around Swingout Sister--don't mess with the original, particularly when it's a black artist. period.

  • no barbara acklin owns this song as corrine agrees herself. she first heard barbara acklin sing this at cleethorpes

  • my hometown a million miles away from where I live now LOL

  • I thought Swingout Sister were the first group to do this song to "Soulful Strut". I stand corrected. This woman has a beautiful voice!

  • her husband wrote this song (barbara's) this song was first released by barbara in 1968, as "Am I The Same Girl?"

then Young Holt released an instrumental version later that year enititled "Soulful Strut"

  • Great info. I love this song. Didn't know that it preceeded the instrumental by Yound and Holt.

The things one learns on You Tube.

    Dec 1, 2008

  • I think ive got hung up on xpingers record collection.Took the afternoon of work, to happy to go in.

  • excellent!

  • the sad part is that on the one hand YT makes it possible for a whole new generation 2 be EXPOSED 2 real music but unfortunately most of them are so used to hearing synthethics and samples that they cant"hear" what makes the original a classic so they think the remake is "better". SOS did an EXCELLENT job of "remake" but there is no way to compare the melody of Barbara's voice harmonizing w/real music in the background to the remake. Microwave ovens "cook" but it's not the same as a chef's oven.

  • thanks for the post., love love love this song, kudos!!

  • This song makes me think of Birra Moretti

  • when i hear this song i think of Perroni nastro azzuro

  • Awesome sound ... thanks for posting ...

check out Barbra`s Love makes a woman .. even better ... KTF...

  • I thought someone made this before swing out sister. Now I know who it is. Thanks for posting this.

  • this is THE version

  • Unfortunately, Ms. Acklin is no longer with us. She passed away of pneumonia in 1998.

  • this barbara Acklin was co writer with Eugene Record of Chi-lites fame. Any love interest there. Sounds like his was pissed off at her a released the intrumental broken heartedly, we can assume. was it so, and actually is that Eugene on the keys in the background? Both awesome songwriters....

  • Eugene Record was her husband. It is Ken Chaney of Young-Holt Unlimited on the keys. The Young-Holt Unlimited hit is the backing track of this song with the piano replacing Barbara's lyrics.

  • Wonderful!

  • Awesome!

  • I never knew this existed until now...

    Beautiful!

  • greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, the voice is wonderfulllllllllllllllllll

  • MAN FUCK YALL THIS MY SHIT !!!!!!!!!

  • She was robbed, and so were we. wonder how often this happened.

  • Still does the music industry is is full of foul

    cretin .

  • Thank you thank you thank you. Your a star

  • Yeah Dusty's is great but so is this. One of the songs that brings back all the fun that was the 60s.

  • You must be kidding, Barbara Acklin has real Soul in her voice, Corinne Drewery made a reasonably good cover but she aint got that Soul!!

  • I will pay homeage to a songs originator. So I say Barbara's version even though I like them all, but this is the original.

  • couldnt have put it better myself. noone sings this better than barbara acklin

  • I totally agree with you, mrrk.
