@cmcgeeify Indeed, sad the poor little thing got ate. But that's nature. Also, as far as predator/prey relationships go, this is perhaps one of the most humane methods of hunting in nature. When it's successful, that seal gets hit so hard so fast it never even knew what hit it.
One of the camera crew filming this footage was female. . . and she asked the skipper of the boat that if she accidently fell in the water would the shark it her whole. . .he said no. . . . . . .it would spit that bit out
@erikism2003, the narrator's script was incorrect as the whale shark is largest predatory fish. It actively pursues its living prey (krill, living plankton, and sometimes small fish), which, by definition, makes it a predator. That the whale shark is relatively slow and does not use its teeth to pursue its catch does not make it any less of a predator.
@tumaii Yeah, that's how it is, the shark pregnancy thing... Kinda of creepy though, can't imagine a person with half a baby sticking out of them and acting like it was nothing.
Hey...it's Bruce. He's kept his pledge to stop eatin' fish. Didn'y say nothin' about cetateans tho...fair suck of the sav', mate...well, in this case, fair suck of the seal, anyway.
@tommelfinger well fire(movement) earth(rigidness) water(unity) air(flow) are the 1# basic elements! the others are among the infinite variations, most life has minerals(<---earth) like calcium iron carbon etc have water heat & breathe air, either saying these are the only ones & there is no variation! or say they are not as important to the universe as sun is to earth is just fundamentalist !!!▐▐▐
@gui3s3 yes, it's real. the sharks @ Seal Island (South Africa) and the Farallon Islands (California) have developed hunting techniques that require them to swim upwards very fast to catch their prey, in this case seal pups. The water in these places is so clear that they have to hunt this way because the seals would see them otherwise. You can take tours to watch them do it.
This is one of my favorite parts in the entire series! I used to rewind and watch it over and over again when I saw it for the first time! Just mind boggling and fascinating, that's the least you can say!!!
The Great White is not the largest predatory fish on the planet as that title is reserved for the whale shark. Even though the whale shark is a filter feeder, it still actively pursues its prey, hence it is a predator. It is also larger than the Great White.
@SeaTimeless, I am only taking issue with the false statement made by the narrator, who says "[T]he great white shark...the largest predatory fish on the planet..." The statement is incorrect because the whale shark is also a predatory fish and it is larger than the great white. The issue here is strictly the size of the predator, not how high it jumps. I doubt the whale shark jumps at all and I know that it doesn't hunt seal, but both points are irrelevant to the point I was making.
@Velox415 any animal that actively pursues/attacks its prey is a predator. A whale shark deliberately seeks out plankton and krill, swims in patterns such that these are bunched together, then sucks them into its mouth. Contrast this with the passive (and therefore non-predatory) basking shark, which simply swims with its mouth open hoping that something will go in. Many if not most predators rely on speed and teeth to hunt, but these characteristics are not what make them predators.
Predatory fish means exactly that. A fish that hunts it's prey. A whale shark doesn't really 'hunt' in the predatory sense. It just swims around with it's mouth open and scoops up tiny plankton. That's not really 'predatory'.
The whale shark doesn't just "swim around" with it's mouth open in a passive way--that's how a basking shark feeds. By contrast, the whale shark seeks out its prey, bunches up the krill/planton (which are living animals), much like a pride of lions congregates a herd of wilderbeest, and sucks them in. The whale shark is active and deliberate in its hunt for living creatures, so by definition it is a predator.
@FredFoswell, it is not true that the whale shark swims around in a similar manner like the basking shark. It actually hunts its prey (ever dive in Utila?) while the basking shark is entirely passive. Biting teeth are not a prerequisite for being a predator (e.g. frogs). Whether or not the "scientific community" you speak of accepts it or not, it can't be helped that the whale shark is a predator. I guess you and I will just have to disagree on this one, though the facts support my position.
If you want to see this with your own eyes and in the one place in the World where this happens, Go to the Cape in South Africa. Specifically Seal Island around there. Not sure if they actually allow tourists out there but if you got the money I doubt they will say no. Most money would go to Shark conservation anyway if you use a reputable licenced guide.

The whale shark swims around in a similar manner to the basking shark. It doesn't hunt/stalk/chase/run down it's prey like a great white shark does.
The scientific consensus is that it's not a predatory shark in the true meaning of the term.
