Who actually benefit from outsourcing jobs to other countries? Why are Americans not communicating to protest to expose who is actually internally destroying the US financially?
It would be nice to think that America is still largely composed of men and women like Joe, people like my father and grandfather. Where did everything go so wrong? I always assumed honest and fair was the predominant mindset; perhaps it truly still is. We just need to "end" Wall Street and its employees over at the Capitol Building so that we can refocus on the good People that still comprise the country. How ironic: Had Al Qaeda hit the Capitol building during a SOTU, America would be saved!
I sent him an email a few months back to tell him how great his interviews and books were. He responded promptly thanking me. I'm glad I had a chance to correspond with him as little as it was. I'm a fellow West Virginian and he was spot on regarding Appalachian culture.
What it would take to get the vote back? Why do you think you deserve it? The democrats created a greasy welfare state and destroyed constitutional republic's living. Also, Protestantism was a good fit with the constitution. The welfare state of the democrats does not even need a middle class, and now doesn't have one. Will never return to the democrats. Blank off! Americans need a new country for them now. Listen to this twit "interviewer." Mommy Professor!
If the 70 pc were to wake up & stop to stand for equal rights & not allow the corporation capitalist create their politics, controlling within the feeble minded slaves, that ideals of life for all those without wealth will not survive without these corrupt media controlling dictators & anti social human beings, then steal time of life from each for $15 per hour, your life & spirit will never improve, you die miserable. SEE IT, REJECT IT, THEN UNITE & DESTROY IT .. Wake from the brainwashing.
What's wrong with having the "Scots-Irish white working class ethos" of not needing anything for free? What's wrong with not believing I owe another man anything or that another man owes me anything? I have a feeling his book is full of cartoonish caricatures of the rednecks the looney left can't understand. All working people are philosophers and this author simply disagrees with them- which is why the looney left can't move them and why he tries to portray them as ignorant.
The poorest of the poor still vote Democrat, regardless of the color of their skin. The ones who vote Republican are poor, but they generally aren't the poorest of the poor, people who also have no business voting for these goons.
This is a great book. Joe Bageant is a really good writer who captures the reality of living in this part of the world. Most people here don't know much about how the deck is stacked against them, and if they do, they blame the government, minorities, the liberals, and the gays, instead of the corporation.
Joe is right up to a point. Corporations are oppressive but the working class also has responsibilities. For instance, you can't fry brain cells or live irresponsibly and expect life to reward you. Economically the real problem is inflation. When cars cost what a 3k square ft. house did 30 years ago and the note on that vehicle is more than the PITI of that house, your going to have problems. Wages have not kept up with inflation. This is Governments fault for manipulating the money supply.
I agree with you. I'm all for working class people taking responsibility. But part of that responsibility is understanding what the problems are. It's not the gays and "cultural elites."
And I'd be very happy if we'd actually do something to drug dealers and we actually did have sound drug policies, which are cost effective and work.
I know too many people where I live who have destroyed their potential. These people were bright, but they just destroyed it all.
Surely your not talking about arresting more people for pot. I think an arrest record does more to harm your potential than smoking grass. If your talking about harder stuff like meth, well you have more of a point but I think thats attacking one of the sympotms (when the cause is the misery of the working class grind that Joe writes about)
The harder stuff really does need action, and I agree-- it should be treated as an illness.
Now, we still have to do something about the dealers-- the people who get rich off of this stuff and many actually work for the police and CIA and are covered up by them.
Devastated to hear of Joe's passing - what a guy. Only the good die young.

Joe was the best. As much as a person can love one known only through email and essays, I loved him. He was a true Bodhisatva.

Joe was an honest voice from a point of view too seldom heard these days. I'll miss him.

@JCJ77 You have ... "a feeling"? You know you need to take the time to read the book, then continue with your criticisms, right?

No. No.
