  • Barbara Walters is the most overrated person. Frankly, she makes me sick. Who is she but a parasite who has made a living asking provocative personal questions of famous people? She's as small as the sheeple who pander after her pathetic non-accomplishments. Of course, this doesn't mean squat to Walters, but it needs to be said.

  • Friends of hers say she wanted to be a woman and live for love. Up to that point she had been like a nun! Gives her more depth and complexity. We will never know who she really was but it's amazing she still has people in her spell!

  • What do you expect from fucking Barbara Walters.

  • The interview (which she freely agreed to ) reveals an important aspect of her personality; the self-destructive part. She states it is more a woman's job to have a man of her own than to sing. That is not a particularly wise belief to hold when you're maria callas. She chose in Menegheni a man who helped develop her career and in Onassis one for whom she'd neglect it. Fascinating personality and artist.

  • What ladies with the class and intelligence of Maria Callas and Jackie saw in Onassis has always baffled me. Jackie probably was influenced by the money power and after the asassinations of her husband and his brother by the man's aura of power and the security surrounding him. Maria however got little out of the deal and this boorish uncultured man impeded her artistic progress and wasted precious years of her life, she could have spent singing. She got very little out of being his mistress.

  • Maria Callas was a flamboyant public figure who courted publicity through out her entire life. Barbara Walters was asking for personal information that may have influenced Callas' extraordinary career. Was it any of our business? No. Did we care about Maria Callas. Yes.

  • CLASS ACT !!!

  • Only Maria could be so classy in the face of such disrespectful interrogation...

  • what a douchebag, barbara walters.

  • Agree @ 418 sadeyes

  • babbbawaawa at that time was having an affair with the black Senator from Mass, so, why the hell would that hag be asking anyone questions, SO private????

  • what grace and class she has for even answering those questions without being catty..

  • she's gorgeous

  • αυτό το υπέροχο, συνετή SIREN.

  • both horrible, Callas and dirt bag Walters. Callas, for agreeing to air her dirty laundry in public, and Walters for having no talent, for not being a journalist and for being in the same league as murderers, sexual predators and Wall Street executives.

  • That's Barbara Walters for you.

  • "I admire her convictions."

(Women like maria are not a dime dozen)

  • Hello, leave people's personal life along......... married or not not your business! Callas was very polite to answer every question, if I was there with her, I would grab her and ran out the door.

  • She died so young...53. What an extraordinary life in such a short period of time.

  • Did everyone not hear Maria Callas say "thank you for asking these questions" at the end? She cleared up a lot of misconceptions the public had about her and her relationship. The tabloids and media coverage were making up things left and right. Barbara Walters asked her questions that allowed her to address the misconceptions of Callas. Everyone saying these vile things should be happy Callas was given the platform to share her feelings. I for one KNOW Callas wouldn't appreciate the nasty talk

  • everyone needs to calm down. Do you think Callas was not told prior what the interview was going to involve? This is standard. She was aware the interview was going to this point.

  • Relax everybody, Barbara Walters is just doing her job and asking exactly the (often indiscreet) questions that the whole world wanted to ask. Callas, as always, is totally cool, calm and poised, not the least bothered by the queries, and even says, "...that's an honest question and I'll answer it." She obviously is not the least shocked or offended by Walters, so why should we be?

  • See the Biggest Assault on Parental Rights Goin on for over 20 years! See Documentary on Government State Sanctioned Kidnappings Going on in America Today! See Documentary .................Decostructing America

  • Callas was right. Why should you marry. Anyone would feel the same, do not hurt someone you loved before.

  • Now thats the lady I want to be. Brava!!!!

  • Maria Callas is great in this interview. She comes across as smart, vulnerable, and wise. I do think she was still in love with Onassis. But she is not bitter about the turn of events that took Onassis away from her. "Love has no chains..." A very wise woman.

  • Maria Callas...the best. Barbara Walters disrespectful bitch!!! F U

  • Barbara Walters is a such a cow, philistine and tool.

  • I love the way Maria keeps herself together during the interview and gives intelligent answers to stupid questions. Fuck you very much Barbara :)

  • Barbara Walters - YOU ARE A CUNT and a lowlife cretin.

How dare she abuse Callas like that and ask those abominable questions to the great legend? Who the fvck does she think she is? Ughhhhh, what an imbecile.

  • Goddess.

  • Never forget that Callas started the relation with Onnasis when he was married and she was married to.

  • Barbara Walters is a tool. How on earth do people have any respect for her as she is always prodding with disrespectful questions?

  • @jsphotos Barbara Walters had an affair with a married man that lasted years I wonder if it was going on during this time.

  • Barbara Walters is very pushy in this interview. Callas handles her very well though. She is articulate, and really way ahead of her time in describing her relationship with Onassis, and her views on marriage & relationships.

  • is that barbra walters

  • VERY rude questions. I would have told her to go to hell. I cannot believe she was so rude and insensitive to Maria.

  • @Discoboy504

Yes, but a true diva tells a reporter with rude questions to "go to hell" with a smile and does it in a stunning gown and badass heels!

  • god what an absolute bullshit interview...

  • @Discoboy504 -- Get a life, Discoboy504. As disconcerting as it may be to you, Callas is a human being, not some image frozen in celluloid. What is wrong with being asked about love, about marriage, about the intrigues and betrayals she, and everyone else, experiences. Walters didn't ask her to bare her soul, didn't attempt to deconstruct her before the world, just a look into some of the complexities, the human frailties and marvels of a profound artist. Insensitive...omg drama queen -get real

  • @Discoboy504 What can you expect from Barbara Walters?

  • The word "Diva" can be applied only to Maria Callas, from which the word must have been coined.

  • Why thank you... you helped to further destroy my life! How kind... did you get some video content out of it? I hope so...

  • Above all ..... Maria Callas was a smart woman !

  • I thought I had already seen Barbara Walters at her most ungodly ignorant. I now stand corrected.

  • "there are no chains for love......" WOW she was way ahead of her generation

  • What rude questions! Totally out of line!

  • Is that Barbara Walters interviewing Maria?? What a freaking hag walters is!!!! Callas remained a lady, even when that hag threw questions at her.....Whay a lady!!!

  • ANOTHER DOUGE BAG INTERVIEWER ,WHAT DID MADAME CALLAS WASTED HER TIME WITH THIS WOMAN ,WHO CARES IF SHE WAS MARRIED OR NOT , THAT WAS HER PERSONAL LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT ABOUT THE FOR EVER GREAT LEGACY OF AMAZING MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE'S THAT SHE LEFT US TO ENJOYED ,WHY NOT INSTEAD OF THE STUPID QUESTIONS GIVE HER ALL THE COMPLIMENTS FOR SUCH A DELIGHTFUL VOICE AND INTERPRETATION OF ONE OF THE HIGHEST'S FORMS OF ART !!!!!!! I WILL ALWAYS LOVE TO HEAR ""MADAME CALLAS""

  • @orella25 Me too! I agree with you on the grandeur that was Maris Callas. The Earth is a bit sadder without her on it.

  • @orella25 --Oh shut up, with your bloviating. Just. Shut. Up. You pretentious bore! Yes, Barbara Walters romanced media whoredom, often, but the questions of a famous person, as to their persona, a more intimate look as to who they are, is of interest to the public; it is more interesting to know the artist as a person, not merely an aesthetic abstraction, a two-dimensional image whose mere utterances are of songs for the stage, the inspirations of artists and people for song alone.

  • Respond to this video... Most interesting are the complexities, the wisdom these individuals, as a result of their rarified experiences. The contradiction of womanhood and artistry -- to sing as a career, or to fulfill her womanly duty to love and be loved -- this is of great interest, and ultimately enhances her. Enough of your pretensions.

  • Beautiful and elegant, real Diva!!!!!!!

  • What a stunningly beautiful woman she was.

  • dont you just love those reporters?they dont posses any talent ,they interview people of talent they dont produce anything they only interview industrial boses ,yet we treat like gods and they think of themselves some kind of divas.tahts why we have barabara and oprah.

  • Barbara Walters was as obnoxious back then as she is today.

  • This interview reflects the sexist society the US was back in the day when marriage was the pinnacle of a woman's life, having a husband, and a single woman is considered unhappy. The whole attitude of that stupid Walters would have been different and Maria's responses would be perfectly acceptable today.

  • What's up with these insensitive questions!!!??? Callas was so patient and regal in spite of them.

  • She reminds me Angelina Jolie, she is very charming!

  • The "journalist" is Barbara Walters who, sadly, is still living while La Callas is gone these past 33 years and Opera will never be the same again

  • The "journalist" is Barbar Walters who, what a bitch... sadly, is still living while La Callas is gone these past 33 years and Opera will never be the same again

  • which year was this please?

  • Callas put Onassis on a pedestal and he treated her like... a woman!

  • shame on you barbara!! you need your ancient ass slapped!!

  • Come on, you're sitting in front of Maria friggin' Callas, and all you can think about asking is about her love life?? how many times did she inisist 8not ask, I stress... INSIST) about her getting married?? If Maria Callas says she doesn't care for marriage then you belt up and get on with the next question!! Dumbass interviewer...

  • @CuteMcBeauty

What three questions would YOU have asked her that aim for originality and to discover new things about Maria?

  • @1401JSC 1) Who is Maria Callas, not the singer, but the person? 2) What do you think are the three biggest highlights of your life? and 3) Inside your head, Maria, which is the best and your favorite Aria or full Opera to sing, where and why? I can think of a million others. What business is it of people what celebrities do with their love lives? Is it REALLY that vital for YOU as a fan to learn how she felt about Onassis? Do you love her work or her private life? There. Another 3 questions.

  • @CuteMcBeauty

I can't answer the question "who am I". Can you?

One of the highlights of her life is her love for Onassis!

Favourite? Do you prefer raspberry or stawberry jam aon your toast, and why?

    Futile!

Why do "ordinary people" want to know every detail of the life of personalities? Because they want to compare themselves with her, have a model, maybe dream. "People" magazines are best-sellers.

I would mostly want to know what she does with her money ;p

  • Cara Diva!!! everyone knows how delicate this subject was, what the hell is wrong with reposrters?? this situation of love ultimately killed her voice, her career and then HER!!! Someone should REALLY teach come manners to the press, honest!!!

  • in which year was this?

  • i'll help too :-) but maybe it's better that sometimes journalists do that ... for the sake of putting into light even better the great characters. don't you think?

  • POOR MARIA!

    THE JOURNALIST...SEEKING FOR SCOOP..

    NO RESPECT HAS THIS BITCH!

  • That is Barbara Walters, folks.

  • Marilyn fucked over Jackie who in turn did it to Callas.

  • @RicharddtheStar --and who did it to Marilyn ? Eh? Did you do enough research to find out that JFK did a lot of cheating with many women on his wife ? Did you know that Callas was married when spending time with Onassis, as was Onassis married to someone else? Haven't you learned, by now, that the whole world is a Peyton Place and a soap opera ? And, of course, all the big men want both a saintly wife and access to any famous woman star of their choice. You didn't know that already?

  • Two weeks after Ari married Jackie, He already knew he'd made the mistake of his life. He and Maria were mates; they didn't need a corrupted piece of paper to tell them they loved each other. What is a piece of paper, after all? Love is love.

  • She was a beautiful woman , miss Callas

  • @ahrensgay You are sick in the soul and more than half dead. Go bury yourself.

  • Is this Dr. Girlfriend?

  • she was THE perfect diva, so classy

  • Wow she handled herself with so much class and grace. SO impressive!

  • it's the filthiest spawn of dick juice ever to taint the media world >> Barbara Walters!

  • @ioannhs ;;;;;lol!!

  • I don't like that Jackie WHORE Kennedy (and, ops, my husband is dead, lets suck Onassis cock). She was a cunt..

  • That's obnoxious Barbara Walters.

  • What a lesson of class and elegance, wish women like madonna, mariah, and other so called/self proclamed divas had 1% of the dignity and elegance Callas had. What an example of a woman, and feminist.

  • The “journalist"=fish wife, is impertinent, insensitive, jealous, doom fish wife whit out life experience and respect from other peoples live and privacy.

It is almost abusive...and definitely not civilized dome caw wife; try to interview a world class lady.

  • Of course Barbara Walters always asking uncomfortable question. She embarrassed Ricky Martin and Lady Gaga with questions abut their sexual preferences. After she put Ricky Martin on the spot his career went downwards. Shame on her and as old as she is she should know better.

  • @royamd barbara walters asks what everyone secretly does, or wants to, but no one wants to ask. she is a journalist, not a disneyland tour guide, thats her job

  • @royamd.... Barbara should haven known better???...... what a joke!!!! No they shuold have known better!!! If you're not ready to reveal the truth then dont agree to a Babara Walters interview!! Because you already know what it will be!

  • Callas, clearly, is in a world of pain here.

  • an adulteress woman says " I've done nothing wrong" and wipes her mouth . . Callas is exactly that!

  • @FinCups Religion is hooey, the Bible is hooey, and there is nothing wrong with people freely choosing withwhom they want to have a relationship. The real sin is when people ridiculously swear to be true to each other; men are NOT monogamous BY NATURE. Wake up and get out of your fantasy world!

  • @billyguns2 Hey Billy I agree with you that men are not monogamous by nature but 'the eyes of a man are never satisfied' goes the proverb but that doesn't mean for his own good and the good of society he shouldn't be. Thats why we have laws! Wives and children need protection or societies would be chaos as many are! The greatest pleasure in life comes from self-control or self-discipline. It's a sad man who has nothing to show for a life of being led around by his privates! All the best!

  • I've been watching Callas interviews. She changed accents. Here Barbara Walters is interviewing her. So Callas has her American/NY voice. In another interview, a British reporter is talking to her and she has a British accent. LOL When she spoke French and Italian, she adopted the attitudes of the French and the Italians. But one language I never heard her speak in is Greek. And she was Greek!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @MastersoftheOpera Well now you can, type...Callas in Greece speaks greek...in the Youtube search box.

  • Is that Barbara Walters interviewing? What year was this?

  • @Bella3208 yea, LMAO. I just realized she is 82. Who has she not interviewed???

  • If i were there, i would have say ... CAN YOU LET MADAME CALLAS IN PEACE??? OR I'LL KICK YOURSELF TILL YOU SING A DO6# TO DEATH

  • Barbara Walters is truely a vile creature!!!

  • What is the music she is singing at the end of the interview? i have never heard that before. Does anyone know?

  • Thats from "La Gioconda" (Ponchielli) from the recording at 1952 !

    Best from Imogene

  • Maria Callas is Great! But I love Barbara Walters. She alwalys ask the question we all have in mind. This is why Maria Callas agreed to do this interview, clearly she wanted to let it all out!

  • viva la divina... as for baba wawa...

  • All I can say is: in 100, 200, 1,000 years, if human civilization continues, Maria Callas will live on and Barbara Walters will cease to be.

  • Sorry, I have to agree with some of the comments about Barbara Walters. She's a horrible interviewer. All she wants is to make her subject uncomfortable for the sake of gossip. Poor Callas, here she's trying to deal with the whole Onasis/Jackie situation and Walters keeps pushing and pushing.

  • @MarcoKnokardy You should see the interview Baba Wawa did with Lauren Bacall, in the late 70s. It's so saccharine and juvenile, it's even worse than this. She actually asks Bacall if she were a tree, what kind of tree would she be? (She should have said a sap maple, for doing this fucking interview!) Baba Wawa, another case of Idiots at the Top!

  • @AspettO and Pathetikos: my thoughts exactly!

She shouldn't be allowed to make such an interview. Callas should have her handle the questions previously and answer them by mail

(given that there was no internet at the time). What an ass!

  • all these complaints about Barbara Walters are laughable -- she asked the questions that were on everyone's mind at the time, it was a great interview.

Callas had no trouble deflecting questions she didn't want to answer - she clearly wanted some airtime on this subject.

  • wow she's so pushy and i love Callas because she is so elegant and poised in the way that she handles these invasive questions makes me love and respect her even more

  • Gosh I feel like punching Ms Walters. I hate the way she asks these harmful question with that sweet voice, like "Yes I'm tearing your heart into pieces but I'm still classy. Deal with it."

Callas shows so much dignity here... which proves once again what a great actress she was !! I can't imagine how she must have felt after the interview... Damn Ms Walters !!!

  • Walters is plain rude .... gossip is her specialty, that's how she made name for herself

  • she was such a beauty

  • I want to strangle the journalist.

  • Want some help ??? :P

  • It remembers me that interview walkout with Katherine Battle! If you could give me some help there too, I would be grateful. :-)

  • @operaholic001 I'll help too :)

  • @operaholic001 no touch and very stupid journalist. I would have left the interview if I had been Maria

  • @Pathetikos: That's Barbara Walters hahahaha

  • @Pathetikos Its Barbara Walters, lol.

  • @Pathetikos they were rude questions, but it makes for a fascinating interview

  • @Pathetikos And I'll bring the baseball bat!

  • @Pathetikos I've always wanted to,I've always found Barbara Walters to be so anoying!!!

  • @Pathetikos its Barbara Walters. wait in line haha

  • @Pathetikos you want to strangle Barbara Walters!?

  • @fosseboi

    yes

  • what an extraordinarlily elegant woman..Dignity and class, and enlightenment.

  • yeah really elegant and wise

  • Sorry to say that Walters must have asked Jackie O for her opinion as they were all on the same NY scene at the time - these questions are too stinging - they must have been formed with J.O's knowledge and counsel.

  • Wow, it really is Barbra a Walters, shit!

  • she's so elegant and wise.

  • Complete coverup of her real feelings, full of contradictions, like being "married to a man she loved (Meneghini) and not having the "need to sing" (?!?!) because it is "not a woman's job" (?!?!) So why did she bother with Meneghini at all?!?!?

But this shouldn't be media fodder anyway. She's almost losing control around 5:20 or so talking about Jackie. I can just imagine her after the interview alone in her room and crying her eyes out.

  • I totally agree with you zamyrabyrd. I also felt that Callas was being more politically correct than honest, but then again, who can blame her? It was the right thing to do and she did a good job in covering it up. I think that Onassis presented her with new opportunities and she just wanted a break from singing, plus SHE WAS IN LOVE (Possibly for the first time), I don't think that she hated singing, or was forced to do it...

  • Her husband, Meneghini, though, is the one who gets short shrift here. She must have regarded him as no more than a father figure as long as there were rumors of her crush on Visconti somewhat earlier.

"Loving" what you can't have or what is harmful to you is surely an affliction but also an indication of emotional immaturity. Popular culture enshrining romantic love as an absolute has a lot to do with all this confusion. She was living out so much of operatic fables and paid heavily for it.

  • I just wanted to add that anyone who sang with the intensity she did, had to be totally committed to her art. Therefore, I do not think she wanted a "break from singing". She may have been handed an unfair ultimatum like Victoria Paige in the 'Red Shoes'--'dancing or me"'. But old frog face didn't have to say it in so many words. Persistently wearing her confidence down like sandpaper with hints and innuendo was more than enough to finish her. And then Jackie O!!!

  • that's the truth Walters deserves

  • Could you post subtitles because the sound is not very good?

  • that's Barbara Walters interviewing-

Callas was always looking for a strong man to boss her around a bit, but she was her own woman too-

A lonely woman, because so many men were afraid of her-

She was incredible, she had it all, but that could be quite intimidating too-

  • bitch reporter...

  • La Divina shows that she has what it takes to be Divine about love as well on stage!

Very few people could be as elegant, as generous or as precise without losing their composure. Her last remark about integrity rather puts Walters in Walters' not very enviable place.

    Not Ms. Walters' finest moment.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Sad to see that Barbara Walters has always been such a bitch... Always asking the questions that hurt the most.. Even if w'ere actually dying to know the anwsers...

  • It is so insensitive for anyone to judge her deepest feelings that she had for Onasis and Her husband. If anyone appreciate her voice and her art, should be able to know, she must have loved both of them with true honest feeling that are so deep to understood by others who has not experienced those deep complex and honest emotion.

True artist like her, cannot compromise her true feelings for any thing. And act on her true feelings. That makes her so

Divine as artist as well. Divine Callas.

  • What a find! She (Callas) is either deluding herself or lying in nearly every answer. Onassis did not stop her from singing or ruin her voice, but her complete infatuation with him ruined both her voice and her life.

When she met him she was the most famous singer alive and was a very sheltered woman who knew only opera. Of course she tired of singing by then. And Jackstowne, being the world's richest man makes you look a lot better.

  • How on earth do you think you know her business better than she does!! You have only proven yourself to be a plain FOOL. People like you are so nauseating.

  • I shouldn't have to stoop to respond to you but I will. 1. You would do well to know WHO you're talking to, you'd find that though I'm 31 I'm much more intimately acquainted with the situation then most.

2.READ just one or two books on this woman and watch a biography and you'll see that if I presume to "know here business better than she does" it has been well documented for the public elsewhere.

I love her as a singer too, but she was a woman, not a saint.

  • could someone tell me the name of the aria she's singing at the end, and what opera it's from?

  • from the finale of la gioconda.

  • i love the look callas gives walters at the end of the interview just before she smiles--it's one of barely repressed disgust. callas hated the media.

  • Singing isn't a woman's job? Why does it cause her to be infertile?

What an idiot. Who in God's name falls in love with Aristotle Onassis? He was ugly as sin.

  • i am surprised Callas did not kill him.
