How has your imac run with the 2 & 2 and the 4 & 4 ram ? I thought I heard before that each memory card should be the same specs for each slot - ie 4 4 4 4 ?
I have bought memory from macsales.com and they recommend matched pairs also... I am running two 4GB sticks in my MB PRO 13 and four 2GB sticks in my iMac... I don't think it seriously hurts to use unmatched pairs, but, Id venture to guess that performance and overall stability/longevity may be somewhat improved when matched pairs are used.
I can't decide whether to upgrade mine to 16G instead of 12G, I'm not so sure if getting 12G could runs my apps like no lags.

@accordguy0325 Thats actually true, apple doesn't recommend different sizes in different slots. . . i just talked to them about it.
