Sorry - I love Ute Lemper's work, but this is a ghastly version. The German is fine: the English is forced to the point of being ludicrous. My favourite covers are the Gisela May ?v=IKoht4u4oAk and Anne Kerry Ford ?v=3eENWTA0bs4 ones.
This song has not to be sang this way. Jenny is the suppressed and she hides and only dreams her dreams of liberation and revenge.
Singing it this way, it destroys the heart of this song.
I thought she would be a good singer and I have heard god song of her. This one is definitely not god, And why two languages? And why such cries? Effects are not anything.
here in finland all we do is roll R's like bastards, but even this is too much for my ears. I don't understand. pffftt, I can only imagine how retarded it sounds to english ear-
Wonderful rendition. This is to be performed on a stage, with all the extremes, it is an Opera. Witnessed Cyndi Lauper perform this character in 3 Penny Opera, on Broadway, wonderful as well.
Ausgezeichnet performance!! Ute is the real spirit of Kurt Weill on the stage. Marvellous theatrical performance! Unbelieveble! Toll! Sehr gut! Nur für experts, sorry!!

@kawairx2: you wrote >>Ugly and forced diction.<< Baby, this is the *whole* point; it's *meant* to be "ugly" and crude; witness Bertolt Brecht's own rendition of "Mack The Knife." The character of "Pirate Jenny" is a snarling, bitter, *murderous* bitch-prostitute; only a *brilliant*, native speaker of German, like Ute Lemper can pull this off *perfectly*. Brecht would've been *PROUD*. :-D
@kawairx2 What? Are you joking? Or just somewhat blunted as a person? Do you truly not see how great this is? I would put this on par with Nina Simone's.
@morningchaps I have to agree with a poster on the Lotte Lenya message boards--this song is much better when sung with ironic sweetness and stillness; underplaying these horrific lyrics makes it so much more terrifying. Lenya was the perfect personification of this idea. I love Simone, but she overdoes it and turns it into melodrama.
@kawairx2 Lol. You dont understand anything, dont you? Than you maybe like more Mackie Messer interpreted by Ella Fitzgerald or stupid Darrin who're raping Weil's music to become a f**king party-crap-swing.
The German original was subtitled "The dream of the kitchen maid" - the song symbolises the built-up resentment of the lowly employee, fantasising about what she would do to everyone demeaning her.
This is the opening of a live concert at the Cafe Caryle @ Hotel Caryle in NYC. There is both a CD and DVD. This interpertation is extremely ironic since this is a very expensive hotel. Both recordings are under the title "Blood and Feathers."
please - this song on german performed by her!

Too affected, with all those rolled r's and "hells." Lotte Lenya was Pirate Jenny.

@Mavarla Exactly. So many opera singers butcher Brecht because they do it way too clean (plus so many opera singers suck at acting).
