know what the best way to tell that this "self-esteem" movements in schools is faulty?? look at the performance of college freshmen lol. a lot of them are coming in unable to do math without a calculator, do not know conversion factors, can't form coherent sentences and now its the college's business to get them up to par. reward people for progress =).
John baby that methodology has been blasted to all hell and back as producing false positive and generally being a worthless standard of measure for aggression.
You can't shelter the kids forever on failure, it's going to happen to them sooner or later in their lives and they need the skills to be able to just bounce back from it and/or move on from there.
It's OK to let your child fail at things, just don't let them down.
It's a tough balance. We need to criticize when it's necessary, but prevent children from being made to feel less than human or like they're complete idiots with no future just because they make mistakes. That's why it's important to make clear that mistakes can be beneficial learning opportunities rather than the horrible nightmarish thing so many of us treat them like.
Yep, this is so right! However, there's need for a serious balance. Making everyone feel special all the time doesn't work, but if you're being frowned upon as terrible at everything when you AREN'T terrible at everything, you've taken the "Achievement" attitude too far. The opposite of this "Self-Esteem" movement is the idea that 1% of us are special and 99% of us are mindless idiots, which is just as destructive. Right now, though, more criticism in classrooms is needed; not more praise.
My gole this month is better spelling! LOL! That was awesome.
Remember, Tyler Durden says, "you are not a unique and beautiful snowflake! You are the same decaying biological matter as everything else!"
