What a powerful voice! Really love his delivery on the "heave the capstan round" verse.
I've posted my own version of this song, although it's a tad more obscene. Both the opening verse about shooting bears in the stern and the closing verse about the girls that wait being a "hell of a way" away suggest to me a homosexual context that I tried to bring to the fore in my recording. Hugill never made any mention about bowdlerizing this particular text, but I find it hard to believe that he didn't.

I met Don last October at Mystic Seaport Museum. He is incredibly congenial, as well as generous with his time and knowledge. His shanty program is out of this world.
