Although this is considered a classic, Diana (looking back, thinking back and hearing again) sounds like a child, and her mannerisms are so affected...that shoulder, head and neck movement with that awfully unnatural looking smile seems so rehearsed and unreal. The song, on the other hand, is okay.
Dazzling homage to Mary, Diane & Flo... This performance, their first time on TV. was HUGE... America, was captivated with The Supremes. This, their 3rd # 1 in a row. That got them a coveted gig on Ed Sullivan. They had 'made it!' (but it took 3 hits).
CSAM was knocked out of # by the Beatles' I Feel Fine, but after THIS apperance it returned the favor and replace the Beatles as #1 the first wk in '65. So it was @#1 twice and in different years. You'll in on Jeopardy with that!
I just came across your mashups tonight. I watched about 6 or 7 of them and I think I'm in love with you. They are absolutely incredible!! Please keep on doin' what you're doin'!! I want more. Maybe another girl group like First Choice.
I've been a Supremes fan since '64, with Baby Love and I think this is superb! You've brought Diane, Mary & Flo to a new century and to another generation of fans.
Yes LOVE this. Diana so sweet, Flo TEARING UP the background vocals with her soaring soprano and Mary acting as that perfect balance with her smooth Contralto/mezzo-soprano voice =)
great mix but I think that the supremes track "baby where did our love go " would have sounded better with this solange \i decided because both songs shre the same bam bam bam bam sound.
"Where did our love go" was the sample used on the original version of "I've Decided." I agree, but Solange also sings the melody to Martha and The Vandellas "Heatwave". So Heatwave would have been even better to mix because the chords are exactly the same.
Bcoombs, I do not want to get into a personal slanging match with you..Florence lovers often send death threats etc. I wish you well. We will both obviously keep listening to the supremes and will enjoy their music for the rest of our lives. they sure left a wonderful legacy.
Death threats? I'm hardly going to go there - esp. not with someone so trifling as to say "psychosexual trauma" means "fucked in the head" before deleting their own comment out of, presumably, embarrassment. Yes, I've read all about the "kid gloves" thing. Some people are touchy. Flo was touchy. Big diff between being understandably a bit strange due to unresolved rape trauma and being a bitch. No, Diana's not to blame for Flo's rape. She was, however, far from awesome - much like you.
i have never been embarrassed about what i have said. i removed it as i had not wanted to continue arguing when we both obviously have such different opinions that will never bend...thanks for the personal insults, which i will not counteract..as you say, so long.
I am glad I saw these 3 original Supremes live in Detroit when I was growing up. I always thought Flo and Mary stood out. Anyway you assess it, Flo's story is sad. Despite all the racial discord of the 60's the Supremes were good enough to attract followers of all races.
Wow this is amazing. I love the song 'I Decided" and I absolutely love Miss Diana Ross and the Supremes. This was briliant. I would love to hear Ginuwine's "I Love You More" mixed with Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover". That would be amazing. lol
Depends on who you ask. Millions and Millions would disagree with you. We can start with her place in history such as being called the greatest entertainer of the century by Billboard. Look it up. Diana Ross forever baby!
Diana Ross' place in history" is cemented by her belonging to the greatest female singing TRIO of all-time. I already know what Billboard voted her. Is that supposed to make me not think Diana Ross is still an overrated egomaniacal bitch?
You are correct. She will always be part of the Supremes legacy but one person will always be pointed out and only one person went on to have ANOTHER successful career that can stand on its own. Overrated or not.....In the world of SHOW BUSINESS, it is all about who DOES BUSINESS and BRINGS BUSINESS(dollars)! And all the money was on Diana whether people like it or not. It is what it is.
I'm not a fool. I know show business is about money, as does everyone. But I also know, as do most people with a conscious, that money does not buy or replace friendship or love. And I am quite sure there are far more Supremes LPs, CDs and memorabilia in people's collections and hearts than there are those of Diana Ross. Also, it is not "absurd" to say Diana slept her way to the top. She slept with Berry, plotted with him, and got rich with him. Dictionary definition of the act.
she always did that before they had to go to this behavior training.
I forgot the name of the ladie I think something with maxine she teached the supremes the vandellas and everyone HOW to perfom on stange and she told Diane she don't have to do that and diane replied why? I'm a star I can do this and she replied no you can't do it if you perform and so diane learned to stop it =D
And those people "behind the scenes" that claimed to not like Diana could also be seen as jealous underachievers.....there is always two sides to every story.....this same tired one keeps resurfacing.....underachievers will do whatever it takes to try and bring someone down.
The people "behind the scenes" at Motown were the people producing her work, people also working for Berry Gordy. Their money was good and they lived comfortably. They were not underachievers, they simply didn't like Diana Ross because she was a whiny, picky bitch.
Oh, and for future reference, do try to come up with something a little better than the old tired "They were all just jealous of her!!!" refrain. You Diana fans are so unimaginative it's unreal.
No....They weren't jealous of Diana Ross. THEY WHERE JEALOUS AS HELL! People like supporting the underdogs like the outcasted hero because it's a self projection of their own lives of mediocrity. And how in hell do people who have never met her.....know her.....Oh....I forgot....they choose to believe certain people's stories. Interesting that they never believe stories from those like Smokey Robinson who paint an entirely different picture of her. hmmmmm. Selective Listening I suppose. lol
It is "selective listening." Finally you're catching on. Smokey, Berry and one or two of HDH are the only people who like projecting the "Flo bad, Diana good" story. And of course, they're the ones who have their legacies to protect. All the other artists, and that's hundreds of people, some of whom made it and some of whom didn't, project the story of "Flo great, Diana trifling."
Diana Ross is a haggard alcoholic who slept her way to the top. No one was or is jealous of shit about her.
I don't remember Barry or Smokey implying that flo or anyone was bad. They were all young people trying to make it and we all know what that can bring. ALCOHOLIC. Funny you should say that because it is a fact that Flo would be smashed at rehearsals. Of course people blame her battle with the bottle on Diana. Though I believe the notion of Diana sleeping to the top is absurd. But if that is true......Perhaps flo should have been chosen power men rather than men who ran off with her money.
No one outright says "Flo was bad!!" They do, however, deflect all blame off Diana, as if Diana were some sort of angel. People rightfully point to Diana as a root cause of Flo's drinking. People drink when they're sad. Flo felt she was being mistreated and cast aside (and she was, along with Mary). It's too easy to say, "Flo was an alcoholic! End of story!" You must ask WHY she drank. And the much of the answer lies in Diana's seflish, bitchy, money-grubbing actions.
she didn't drink because of diana ross...that's a silly arguement. florence's worst enemy was herself. she would have found any minute detail in life to make her unhappy.that was her personality and diana nor mary nor berry were responsible for her actions. you are who you are. she had a great supporting husband i have read (NOT) that would have helped.
YOUR argument is near-sighted and biased. Flo's worst enemy was indeed herself; most close friends of hers to this day agree the unresolved trauma from her sexual assault sort of messed her up for life. But if someone is their own worst enemy, do you really think having a bitchy, money-grubbing "best friend" helps? I blame Diana in the sense that she was a selfish, backstabbing egomaniac who sold her "sisters" down the river and still tries to downplay the Supremes legacy as much as she can.
and your arguement is biased and based on mud that has been flung and has stuck. florenece and mary were also bitchy to diana and jealous in the extreme sense of the word. it has been documented that they rarely spoke to her and mary even acted like a complete bitch when they hooked up again in 1983...those around her encouraging her to be bitchy to diana. if you ask me its diana that's had to put up with backstabbing shit over the years..not florence.
HA! My argument is based on "mud that has been flung and stuck"? No, my argument is based on corroborating testimony from dozens of artists, as well as sheer logic. You are just desperately looking for a way to make Flo's demise ALL her fault when in fact her troubles were intricate and involved Diana GREATLY.
Oh, and about 1983 - you mean Motown's 25th? You mean when Diana pushed Mary on stage? Oh yeah, real mean, Mary, real mean. Your argument's so stupid I almost feel sorry for you.
and you are typical of diana haters...it has been written that mary and others were scheming bitchy things behind diana's back before they went on stage...you typically choose to believe that shit about florence but ignore the crap that was and has been given out to diana over the years. anyway great song and i play it regularly..thank god for diana's delivery on this one...it was perfect. was florence up or down on the day of this recording? did they have to get the oil can out this day or not?
You actually read that shitty "Sparrow" book cover to cover? Wow, talk about masochism. Call me a "Diana hater" - trust me, I'm not offended. I'm making a dartboard of her for a friend, matter of fact :-D
Why don't you specify these "bitchy things" re: Mary and Flo you lay claim to? Assuming, that is, you're finished mocking a deceased person who is known to have suffered psychosexual trauma, you awesome person, you.
I am awseome...nothing wrong with my self esteem. I really think that had there been a wendy, a dolly and queen muck in the supremes, florence still would not have been entirely happy. at one stage she thought the whole world was against her...including people following her...sounds classic bipolar to me and that kind of personality is hard to deal with at the best of times. even mary has said that often everyone had to treat florence with kid gloves and they often did everything to appease her.
Like Aretha Franklin The Queen of Soul said herself "There was just something about that skinny one in the middle". She knew what was up and so did the rest of the world. Diana has an it factor that is rare.
but she wasn't so this is history...when florence had the chance in 1968 she blew it big time and supposedly had a bigger ego than diana by then...accept it...as it happened...diana the lead and then one of the most commercial females in recorded history..movies, stage shows etc. diana forever.
I will not sit here and listen to the reinvented shit about florence ballard. the supremes were fantastic and i have always been a huge fan but i would say that there is far more negative stuff written on here about diana than anyone else. i thought i just stated the fact as it was...diana sang lead.
Awesome video and remix. God the 60's, amazing time to grow up. The other thing is all Diana had to do was bat her eyelashes and she generated more charisma than almost anybody today. There had to be something in the air back then.
i love this! its like old and new warped up in one you have sassy solange with the sick beat and the sweet supremes with their innocent yet soulful voices. five stars! click the thumbs up icon if u agree with me.
Although this is considered a classic, Diana (looking back, thinking back and hearing again) sounds like a child, and her mannerisms are so affected...that shoulder, head and neck movement with that awfully unnatural looking smile seems so rehearsed and unreal. The song, on the other hand, is okay.

And the much of the answer lies in Diana's seflish, bitchy, money-grubbing actions.
bcoombs1988 2 years ago 2
she didn't drink because of diana ross...that's a silly arguement. florence's worst enemy was herself. she would have found any minute detail in life to make her unhappy.that was her personality and diana nor mary nor berry were responsible for her actions. you are who you are. she had a great supporting husband i have read (NOT) that would have helped.
best1forward 2 years ago
YOUR argument is near-sighted and biased. Flo's worst enemy was indeed herself; most close friends of hers to this day agree the unresolved trauma from her sexual assault sort of messed her up for life. But if someone is their own worst enemy, do you really think having a bitchy, money-grubbing "best friend" helps? I blame Diana in the sense that she was a selfish, backstabbing egomaniac who sold her "sisters" down the river and still tries to downplay the Supremes legacy as much as she can.
bcoombs1988 2 years ago
and your arguement is biased and based on mud that has been flung and has stuck. florenece and mary were also bitchy to diana and jealous in the extreme sense of the word. it has been documented that they rarely spoke to her and mary even acted like a complete bitch when they hooked up again in 1983...those around her encouraging her to be bitchy to diana. if you ask me its diana that's had to put up with backstabbing shit over the years..not florence.
best1forward 2 years ago
Your argument's so stupid I almost feel sorry for you.
bcoombs1988 2 years ago
and you are typical of diana haters...it has been written that mary and others were scheming bitchy things behind diana's back before they went on stage...you typically choose to believe that shit about florence but ignore the crap that was and has been given out to diana over the years. anyway great song and i play it regularly..thank god for diana's delivery on this one...it was perfect. was florence up or down on the day of this recording? did they have to get the oil can out this day or not?
best1forward 2 years ago

I love the Supremes but Miss Florence should have lead the group.
jotolove 2 years ago 4
but she wasn't so this is history...when florence had the chance in 1968 she blew it big time and supposedly had a bigger ego than diana by then...accept it...as it happened...diana the lead and then one of the most commercial females in recorded history..movies, stage shows etc. diana forever.

no i won't grow the fuck up and die of aids.
i have the right to opinion as you have.
I will not sit here and listen to the reinvented shit about florence ballard. the supremes were fantastic and i have always been a huge fan but i would say that there is far more negative stuff written on here about diana than anyone else. i thought i just stated the fact as it was...diana sang lead.

I read Diana was very nervous, it being the first time on Sullivan. That's probably why her eye popping thing didn't come out so good. :)

one of the best mash-ups I've seen. :)

Awesome video and remix. God the 60's, amazing time to grow up. The other thing is all Diana had to do was bat her eyelashes and she generated more charisma than almost anybody today. There had to be something in the air back then.
