You are correct. The "American" version is the original version as the music in that version is the music used by the original writer of the carol. He was a minister in a church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He is always fine, but, as an American, I would love to hear him sing this. carol in the tube that we all know. Interestingly, when I was in the UAE, after attending our American Baptist service, I would sometimes attend the Anglican service and would recognize nearly every hymn, but the tune was absolutely unfamiliar. This is not to say their tune was bad, but it was very difficult to sing.
The original (American) setting is unknown in Britain: this version is the one sung at carol services across the UK for the best part of a century. That's not saying one is better than the other: just that Americans and Britons are likely to be equally unfamiliar of the 'other' version and defensive of their own one. Familiarity, in this case, breeds loyalty.

They are both good. My point only is that the original is the other version not heard here. This is the altered version of the music for the carol.
