I love real rap.......says a white girl. I can't stand Lil Wayne and all those other FAKE artists that sell music to wannabe white america. Everytime I think bout jeezy or wayne or whoever makes me think of Jersey Shore kids. Kids that have everything handed to them and never had a struggle a day in there life. Besides what girl to bang or what drink to have in hand. Life is about passion, struggle and love. The Roots always put it in their songs. Thanks for being REAL.
@900incubus Life is always greener. You think The Roots dont spend most of their time thinking about what chick to bang next or what drink they want their ho to get them. Wake up, its a business designed to make money as are all good businesses. You are on a strategy board in some corporate room in Hollywood under the heading, people who like to keep it real. KEEP KEEPING IT REAL WHITE GIRL. PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC
@av399 The freedom...The fire inside you, the will to survive!!
Read to the description, it says "The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival." The key to survival is your will, it's you, you have to fight for your freedom...It isn't a key, or money, or anything else in the world!
@wasifhasanballin do you realize how stupid you sound? so what people found out about the song by FNC? im glad the game chose dope songs for their soundtrack. it exposes the fans not familiar with the roots to the roots. if anything, embrace them.
I liked the video a lot! I love the song. The two do NOT go together well. The feeling that the record gave me is not to be found in the video. I really liked the video, it was intriguing, but it totally distracted me from the song.
I didn't pay their album any attention honestly. Promoted on Jimmy Fallon but I was like eh, I don't really have the time or money to go out and buy an album. If wasn't for Fight Night would probably still haven't paid any attention. Shame on me.
Maybe it's about how the world oppresses us and prevents us from helping our brothers... even forcing us to destroy one another (the cannibalism in the video)... and we'll only gain freedom and respect by fighting and risking it all for one another.
@germanbeerboy that's what it seems like at first huh, but if you look the deeper, there's a lot of symbolism in there that takes a few times to get (such as the box=the fire). it takes a song in a whole new direction
plus it's a well produced cinematic piece by itself
@mrskywalkerr I disagree, the symbolism was linear and force fed. There is beauty in the abstract and form in linearity. And while the production value was top notch the overall feel of the short was awkward and incongruent.
great song.thats real music, with message. not like rap that is playing in radio, all the time about making money and fucking models. when im listening to song like that i wanna make music and im falling in love with music again.thx the roots 4 songs like that
the father's desire to get his son was the plot. the woman and the two guys shot represent the fallen soldiers and the family. it's the tragedy of life we all understand and are vulnerable to.
that box is the unknown desire that everyone feels. we all want to live and succeed in life. that group was lead by that box by force. if you think about it, we have no choice but to keep going.
the son in the end he sees into the box because he was lucky enough to see it through.
damn !! 2010 sees Mos Def's Ecstatic dropping, Nas and Damian Marley releasing Distant Relatives, and The Roots bring out How I Got Over!! Hip Hop is still living and breathing
@IntellectualMusic There's hope yet. Mos's albums is great and so is Damian and Nas's. Why they don't portray this Hip Hop on the radio or anywhere else is beyond me!
@wooodstockDK I saw that and was disappointed. Mos Def did the same thing with some 4x4 commercial years ago but fortunately both artists released fantastic music following their excursions into the commercial foray. For this, they remain 'unsold'. If their music had permanently changed following the adverts, I'd be saddened, but fortunately this isn't the case! Understand, even if 'history', or 'long time' were massive public hits, I'd still hail both as great artists.
@wooodstockDK In a sense i suppose but they arent writing music to appeal to everyone and to get famous, theyre writing things they feel. at least it appears that way.
@wooodstockDK Nope. If Nike elects to use this for a commercial, then good for the Roots. They make money and earn exposure. They're not writing music for Nike. THAT, would be selling out.
This video is beyond amazing!!! wat will be the sad part is that ppl only want commercials and commerialized artists eith their commercialized videos. this video and song needs sum type of recognition.
He held the box up like it had power plus he had guns. OPPRESSION. WHEN THE GUY SHOWED COURAGE AND TURNED THE GUN ON THEM HE DIED. BUT HIS PEOPLES FOUND OUT THE BOX HAD NO POWER AND HE LET THEM GO. SO... STAND UP AND SACRIFICE AND EVEN DIE IF YOU HAVE TO SOME ONE WILL BE FREE FROM IT. BANG!!!
This can be interpreted in so many ways. My take: The captivity represents a lifestyle that has a negative hold on one's life. Negative enough to lose one's past (family, friends, and loved ones). The longer one lives that lifestyle, the more of a toll it takes out of them. Some loved ones however (the father) don't give up the struggle to "rescue" whom they care about. By living this lifestyle, one risks losing everything (including life), and don’t end up gaining (empty box).
@TheTani0s i'd like to think of your definition of the real meaning but i think the director made it for something else. but your interpretation is the best in my opinion
go listen to illdelph halflife and things fall apart... the roots are amazing, and black thought is criminally underrated, but they aren't doing it anymore. and that video sucked.
go listen to illdelph halflife and things fall apart... the roots are amazing, and black thought is criminally underrated, but they aren't doing it anymore. and that video sucked.
its about the Afghan War. The troops are the military and the guys being pushed are the afghanis. the box symbolizes hope, future, freedom, new life. when they find out that the box is empty, they realize the military is running things. from there its all a game. just my point of view
The box is the life. In the beginning the soldier says "this is not a game" and shows the box to the people, which means that "life is not a game" . In the end the soldier gives the box (the life) back to the boy whose father never gives up on him.
The whole video means that you should never give up on life, even though sometimes it seems very hard. Life is all you got, and the ones who don't give up, deserve to live free..til eternity.
Sick vid and song. I think the vid represents letting go and taking on the real world. The weak and tempted perish while the strong willed survive. The soldiers represent life which is not something you can beat. Thats why the cocky looking kid dies, he challenges life whereas the farmers son realizes that to persevere you must be strong enough to survive and smart enough to know that you cant just challenge life, you gotta play by its rules sometimes. At least thats what I got from it....
ok, i accidentally did this and the song sounded cool lol. i was on kanye's blog and he had this song posted. so i clicked it like 3 times by accident and the tabs came up and played the song like 1 or 2 seconds after each other. just try it, it's really cool lol.
@grobarkata Yes Your right! Everytime I here The Roots, Jurassic 5, Beastie Boys or some of the other big Hip Hop Legends... i believe that Hip Hop is still alive!!!!

isn't the guy who keeps smiling and gets shot at the end, the guy in matrix revolutions who says at the end, "It's over, the war is over," or something like that.
Video is NOT shit, crap or whatever you want to call it, the video supports the message that the song is trying to deliver in such a sick way, honestly do what you got to do to understand it because once you get the video, the song means just that much more.
@goorerr why do people keep trying to give an alibi for how bad this is, by saying it has a "deeper meaning". Yeah we get what the song is about and its a great one; and also the video, although unfortunately.
Whats so hard to understand about the video? Its one of two things, gettin out of the poverty stricken streets of Philly or workin his way through the rough music buisness...
I think it might be about overocming adversity, with a little bit of self-determination and morality thrown in. It's not totally apparent. Maybe the father's determination in taking saving his son from the paramilitary group is the source of his own 'fire', and perhaps the dude who's smiling the throughout the clip is proving himself and standing strong as his 'fire'? With that said, there should be a short film which comes out of this; there's gaps in it, like the story of the girl.
Fantastic beat and lyrics. "You dont say good luck, you say don't give up". Well done as usual.
