Oh my goodness............what memories. I was about 10. Swinging on the swing in Grandma's garden singing this song and thinking about Henry. He worn a black leather jacket with fringes and was my fantacy! Way too old for me cos I was a child and he was........I guess a teenager at that juncture.
I love the Jackie de Shannon version and think it's the best although the Searchers do make a good job of it. I think the sound quality on this video, however, doesn't do justice to the melody - too 'tinny'.
To all of you singing the praises of Rickenbackers -yeah, they're great, but what you're hearing here is a Burns Double Six, played by Mike Pender- the sound is slightly darker than the Rick.
now 64 saw searchers..beatles hollies.. etc live on dancefloor in cambridge..(england)..fav..hollies but this song my fav..plus ..sea of heartbreak...god..takes me back.......
also, if you want to decrease the speed a bit, you can take a bit of sandpaper and rub it up against the metal shaft thing that spins the rubber wheel thing [while it's spinning].
I did that on a BSR years ago and slowed it down too much. Then I put a layer of electric tape in the rim of the turntable to speed it up. You could hear the seam every revolution.
As you'll see later in the comments, I have pointed out that the Searchers used a Burns Double six, not a Rick to record this, though in later years they did use Ricks live.
I like to think "original" versions are the most definitive version. The only person who knew how to sing it have to have been Jackie DeShannon. After all she wrote it! This is archaic, sugery, 60's bubblegum s**t. Take that!! Huh...
This is one of the all-time great pop records and has one of the best guitars riffs ever. It's one of those covers that's so perfect it makes the original irrelevant.
This made #35 on Billboard's charts in 1964. Always have enjoyed this version. The guitar sound gives this a definite edge over Jackie DeShannon's original, in my book.
Jackie DeShannon had small US hits with both songs in 1962. What The Searchers did was cover them nearly two years later.
Jackie had only a couple of Top-10 hits as a singer - but she was prolific as a songwriter: Besides the two by The Searchers, Jackie co-wrote: "The Great Imposter" by The Fleetwoods, and "Dum-Dum" by Brenda Lee (with Sharon Sheeley); Marianne Faithful's "Come and Stay with Me" (with Jimmy Page), and Kim Carnes' mega-hit "Bette Davis Eyes".
Number One Tuber...thanx for great info...didn't know my pal Jim was mucking about with Cum Stay wiv Me by Marianne in his session days...mind you back thn he was into quite a lot...as was JP...Jones.
Jackie's version is far better than this, production, vocals everything. Jackie was one of the most talented singer composer of the sixties and never got the chart succes her talent merited.
Yeah...and that version is great...the guiter here though comes through with more urgency..the backbone of the tune...Jackie SINGS it with great style, I'm sure you agree Meowperson out there in SearchersJackiedeShannonLand.
great song! Looking at the video, I noticed the small record player is sitting on top a console...is that a Magnavox? My Grandmother had one. I wanted to save it after she passed away but, I think the tenants that first rented her house got rid of it.
Wow! This video of one of my fave songs really brings back memories Thanks.

Is that the same style Burns Double Six that Elvis Presley used in the movie "Spinout" when he sings "Stop, Look, Listen"?
Jaybird1103 2 years ago
Hi- i did reply, but I can't see it in the comments- as I said, it is and you can see Elvis holding it on the Burnsguitars website

Ya, I slowed down the 45 RPM speed slightly too much, but I have the 33 speed so accurate, you can play a CD totally in sync with the record.

Thank you Rickenbacker for your electric twelve-string guitars.......

Yep! could'nt agree more! Rickenbackers are the Lords of the Jangle! ..... they epitomise that "60s" sound!

The Jackie De Shannon original is 1000 times better, as is her version of Neddles & Pins. Why did these guys keep stealing her songs?

Except the C&W twang is nauseating.

Not hardly! That's what makes this song so great!! Highly distinctive guitar licks.

Agreed, Jackie's original kicks some serious Searchers version's ass ;-)
This version was way overproduced. Noisy too. No subtlety, no romance, no emotion.
Meowbay 3 years ago
De Snannon, Muriel, didn't have that magic guitar riff...which gives everybody such a 'rush' when the drums build up to it.
wgoco 4 years ago
Huh? That guitar riff was directly copied from the original, mind you.
