I have watched this movie over and over. Still very highly ranked in my film collection. I always felt in actuality the defective Stasi agent would have been executed.
Far too many of my fellow Brits think a film isn't worth watching if it's not in English, or if it has subtitles. More fool them for missing out on gems like this. Three fabulous German films show the best and worst of the human spirit: M, Goodbye Lenin, and this, which beat Pan's Labyrinth to the Oscar for best foreign language picture in 2007.
Incredibly, Hollywood is willing to re-make the Millenium sickness trilogy and they don't even dare to make this treasure go to the masses. Bravo for the Germans. This is a truly achievement on filmmaking history and it's European!!!! Wie danke Ihr sehr :-)
Totally agree. Best movie ending ever. This movie clearly leads the way to adult intelligent film where budget, special fx and other adornments have no room. Every man can change and make the choice of being a better person. I do love the movie and its message of hope even under the worst possible conditions
there was this key scene where wiesler wanted to tell his superior everything about "lazlo" but his superior started talking about a psychological paper before him and told him "lazlo" is type 5, if they catch him they just keep him imprisoned for several months and then let him free. from fear he would stop writing which would be a present in his eyes. wiesler then decided not to tell anything to his superior.
@cocojumb0 after the fall of the berlin wall "lazlo" stopped writing and because he found out about wiesler saving him he eventually wrote this book.
in the DDR it was a present if a writer stopped writing, in the real world its a present if he writes something and this book was a present for wiesler because he saved ulrichs life.
I was watching this film last night, and the DVD froze with 5 minutes left! I was so angry at the DVD. Luckily, you posted the ending of the film, so I can sleep now! Thank you!
This ending is perfect. The Lives of Others is a great, great movie.
Astounding, frightening portrait of fear. If anyone has wondered about living under an oppressive regime this movie elucidates it. What a beautifully rendered role he played, so real.
I'd forgotten "Es ist fuer mich" at the end. This brilliant film beat Pan's Labyrinth to the Oscar for Foreign Language film. Sad that Ulrich Muehe didn't live much longer afterwards. He is magnificent in portraying that goes from cold, ruthless to pathetic ... and all because of a piece of music.
That last line brings a huge smile to my face, and when I saw it the first time (last night) I almost felt a tear. And very few movies move me to that extent. Bravo.
grate movie, brilliant plot, wonderfull acting! it teaches us a lesson: despite all the adversities, people never stop feeling and thinking! it is love, friendship and destiny: justice is always done, even if late, it is always done! after all, God seems to stil loving us!

Such a sad, brilliant film. Contrary to what others have said, I find this ending brings a smile to my face. I love how Dreyman and Wiesler have something thats almost a friendship, without ever achually meeting. This ending makes me smile because it's like Weislers recognition from Dreyman of that friendship, and his appreciation of what this man who he has never met has done for him.
I was watching this movie during History class today.
I cried at the end, and most of my classmates holded them. I have got to say this is one of the most beautiful and great (if not, the most beautiufl film) I have ever seen.
Spine chillingly beautiful....incredible story, masterfully told ,great editing and the best conclusion of all time, of any movie I've ever seen..I couldn't leave my seat in the theater until long after the credits were over..It left me in a total state of awe and amazement..
I did not expect this movie at all. The first time I saw it was just a few days ago, and it floored me; this ending line that Wiesler says pierced my heart when I first saw it. At first I was question what he meant, and then it hit me like a wave; the meaning of that last line. One of the greatest films I've seen to date, and easily one of the best films of this past decade.

I remember watching this movie in a theatre here in Glasgow. It was the last day the movie was playing and there was literally 5 people in the place, all sitting seperately and when it ended, all 5 of us there stood up and clapped spontaneously. None of us knew each other but we sort of shared this great experience and were all grateful to have seen it. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Thanks for uploading this ending.

One of the best films I've seen in life, and one of those that everyone has to see - everyone who has lived through this and does not (want to) remember, everyone who wants to understand where I (we) come from, everyone else too :)

To the employee, it only can be understood as "I want to buy it for myself", but for us as viewers, the deeper sense is obvious.
Wait, there is something, you really can't know: HGW XX/7 or, with his full rank and name, Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler was an officer from the Stasi, who had to spy out an author who turns out to be subversive to the socialist regime in the former GDR.
But this officer covers up the action of the author and prevents him from prison. The author doesn't know this until he has a look at his Stasi files. And he learnes, that "on the other side", there was a good man.
indeed...btw..i jus tsaw ur videos playing the piano...i didn't now there was an actual song for sonata for a good man...i thohght it was just a book...anyways...those videos are really good....i like them...have u heard about this movie, called wakking life? the soundtrack is made by an argentinian group called tosca tango orchestra, they have really good piano pieces...
The piece was specifically written for the movie. The piece itself is actually 7 mins, the piece used the last 2 minutes for the scene where Dreyman plays it.
I haven't heard about the movie but I had a look at the trailer for Waking Life,it seems to be shot in a peculiar effect, plot seems interesting. I might watch it if I get the chance.
@articmonkeyslover I did it now ,and i did it when i saw the movie , touch me so much because still happen in the country where i came from (Cuba)...still people defending that system
Thanks for sharing this last part an extraordinary and awesome movie! I saw in german as I am studying the language. The actors are great, especially Ulrich Muehe is briliant!
This is such an awesome ending, usually films that end on a freeze frame are awful, but this one pulls it off so well. I think what makes the ending so worthwhile is that the character sacrificed so much, he basically ensured he'd live a dull life for the rest of his days, just to save an artist from the stasi. Then at the end it seems it was all worthwhile...like his sacrifice did mean something after all.
I have seen this again now and I believe I understand the trick. If I remember correctly, you cannot see Muhe SMILING throughout the movie. Not for a second. This is the only point, when he shows a faint smile. Thats why it is so gripping. He shows real human emotion the first time on his face.
YES, thank you!! I only noticed that just now, myself! Though, of course, he's very expressive before that, even without smiling. Even the way he walks, in the next to last scene: The walk of a thoroughly broken and humbled man...
It is very sad that Muhe died so soon afterwards, considering the acclaim he got.
I have no problems with subtitles except a couple of instances in this film. What may take a longer sentence to say something, may take less words in German, and so when the sentence is said, a longer one is on the subtitles, and just flashes past before you can read it!
A fabulous movie. When Dreyman gets out of the car and then decides not to approach HGW XX/7, I thought that it was a disappointing ending to a great movie. LOL I was shouting at Dreyman not to get back in the car.
Then the dedication to HGW XX/7 in Dreyman's book was of course a better ending.
best German movie about DDR is "Goodbye Lenin" it's about an official of the party who becomes comatose some time before the union and, when finaly awake, has to be thaugth by her children that there has been a major change in the world.
Yea I saw that a few years ago. It uses more of a humorous but serious perspective to view the DDR. I think the DDR that they faked was an idealised one that might've worked in reality(or not).
This is my favorite foreign film of ALL time! i have the urge to watch it almost every day. it's just amazing and it's to bad that not many people know about it.... :(
I reckon. People are generally scared away by the words "foreign+subtitles" and if you mention its a low budget film(it had a budget of something like 2 million) then people simply run and hide.
Yeah that isVERY true. I just recently brought my mom to the foreign film side of the film world. haha its just kinda sad...theres actually an american version of das leben der anderen thats being made currently. im not really looking forward to it though.....
My friend had me watch this movie and warned me that this movie made her cry. I was wondering, "What made her cry??" up until the very last scene when he says "No, it's for me." Then I started bawling!!! Fabulous movie!
I seldom cry in movies, this is one of the BEST films I've seen in over 10 years, I don't think I'm exxagerating. If only Hollywood made films like this again like they did years and years ago.
If Hollywood made films like this, alot of people will stop going to movies because the cinema will become too intense for them.Imagine if someone cried everytime they saw a movie!
By the way, Hollywood is doing a remake of this movie which I don't understand why they would at all.(other than to cater to an American audience).
Though forming an American equivalent to this great storyline(and the historical background) would be a little hard...
A remake? leave it to Holloywood to alter such a good film. I honestly don't see how this working in the States. Hollywood doesn't like emotional intensity in films, they like the mushy crappy stuff that sells like those silly romantic comedies.
I know! Hollywood has an emphasis on profit rather than quality. And in order for movies to be profitable, storylines must not challenge people's ideologies.(E.g:not make them cry or ponder deeply about their own lives)
Haha those "silly romantic comedies" with their unrealisitcally good looking "everyday people" and happily ever after endings.
A remake is to suit an unsophisicated audience, the common masses.
I COULD NOT agree more. Since my cousins are teens and majority rules, I had to suffer watching with them "He's not that in to you" if you want to torture yourself watch this movie. :)
RIP HGW XX/7.

indeed...btw..i jus tsaw ur videos playing the piano...i didn't now there was an actual song for sonata for a good man...i thohght it was just a book...anyways...those videos are really good....i like them...have u heard about this movie, called wakking life? the soundtrack is made by an argentinian group called tosca tango orchestra, they have really good piano pieces...
articmonkeyslover 2 years ago
The piece was specifically written for the movie. The piece itself is actually 7 mins, the piece used the last 2 minutes for the scene where Dreyman plays it.
I haven't heard about the movie but I had a look at the trailer for Waking Life,it seems to be shot in a peculiar effect, plot seems interesting. I might watch it if I get the chance.

@articmonkeyslover wakking life? That seems kind of harsh. XD

@articmonkeyslover
One of the most elegant endings ever. Just a few perfect words: the book dedication and Mühe's line.
Great film, superb actor.
The scene belongs to the "greatest endings" category. I would say "The 3rd Man" ending is another, earlier, example....
charritedehaut 1 year ago
@charritedehaut It's a very subtle but deeply moving ending.

He shows real human emotion the first time on his face.
takbal76 2 years ago 6
YES, thank you!! I only noticed that just now, myself! Though, of course, he's very expressive before that, even without smiling. Even the way he walks, in the next to last scene: The walk of a thoroughly broken and humbled man...
He was such a brilliant actor!!
notverycreative 2 years ago

@Titanboru Yes ,but the book dedicated to him was much better ,WOW !!

If you like watching German movies, you should definitely watch "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei". One of my favourite movies!!!
lakrima69 2 years ago 2
best German movie about DDR is "Goodbye Lenin" it's about an official of the party who becomes comatose some time before the union and, when finaly awake, has to be thaugth by her children that there has been a major change in the world.
Kervanat0r 2 years ago
Yea I saw that a few years ago. It uses more of a humorous but serious perspective to view the DDR. I think the DDR that they faked was an idealised one that might've worked in reality(or not).

@lakrima69 We have watched this one and "Die Fetten Jahre Sind Vorbei" in class and have written on BOTH exams. Awesome.

This is my favorite foreign film of ALL time! i have the urge to watch it almost every day. it's just amazing and it's to bad that not many people know about it.... :(
GirLover77 2 years ago 8
I reckon. People are generally scared away by the words "foreign+subtitles" and if you mention its a low budget film(it had a budget of something like 2 million) then people simply run and hide.
andrewpn 2 years ago
Yeah that isVERY true. I just recently brought my mom to the foreign film side of the film world. haha its just kinda sad...theres actually an american version of das leben der anderen thats being made currently. im not really looking forward to it though.....

Muhe died shortly after this film was made... This performance will always survive him.

this scene is just so heart-warming
to know that there is random kindness
even in the darkest times
and the gentle glow of humanity never dies

I seldom cry in movies, this is one of the BEST films I've seen in over 10 years, I don't think I'm exxagerating. If only Hollywood made films like this again like they did years and years ago.
NaturVita 2 years ago 4
If Hollywood made films like this, alot of people will stop going to movies because the cinema will become too intense for them.Imagine if someone cried everytime they saw a movie!
By the way, Hollywood is doing a remake of this movie which I don't understand why they would at all.(other than to cater to an American audience).
Though forming an American equivalent to this great storyline(and the historical background) would be a little hard...
Perhaps they could talk about the PATRIOT ACT,lol
andrewpn 2 years ago
A remake? leave it to Holloywood to alter such a good film. I honestly don't see how this working in the States. Hollywood doesn't like emotional intensity in films, they like the mushy crappy stuff that sells like those silly romantic comedies.
NaturVita 2 years ago 3
A remake is to suit an unsophisicated audience, the common masses.
andrewpn 2 years ago
I COULD NOT agree more. Since my cousins are teens and majority rules, I had to suffer watching with them "He's not that in to you" if you want to torture yourself watch this movie. :)
NaturVita 2 years ago
Haha... ok I will keep that in mind. ;)
Movies like those come out all the time, will be in cinema for a few weeks then show up on DVD in a few months. More are created and will replace them
Yet there is only one TLOO or whatever great film.
Another quantity over quality example...
andrewpn 2 years ago
Excellent ending to a magnificent film. Ulrich Mühe's performance was just brilliant.
