sorry guys, short extract I thought I'd do on guitar :)

  • oh, Monty, my favorite song...

  • I love this song, what a sin along with so any talented people that die so young. This is dedicated to DAD and Mom, R.I.P. Dad, we all miss you. Thanks for teaching me the Jitterbug as I was the oldest and the one that just loved to dance. My other sister following my footsteps in that way, but the jitterbug was special to me!

  • Makes me think of a time with hope and then resulting in tragedy with Germany losing the war.

  • On my wedding day my dad and I danced to this song for the Father and Daughter dance. Unfortunately, the marriage didn't last. However, I still have and will always have fond memories of my dad and I dancing to this beautiful song together.

  • I would just like to make y'all aware that a new publication is being issued which features thousands of comments from YouTube. It is entitled 'You Are A Tube!' compiled by Steven Fried PLC.

  • I love this one! My Mom and Dad introudced me to this and others from that era!

Dad I love you, I miss you so much! RIP. Mom is so sick with AZ. THANK YOU MOM AND DAD!!!!!! Dedicated to my dear Nicky!!! I love and miss you so, so much!!! RIP. 01/16/1959-05/07/2010.

  • My father and mother loved the music of their era, and this was that music. I grew up listening to old albums of Glenn Miller, Arte Shaw, the Dorsey brothers, and Harry James. There was something shared between those musicians and their audience, an intimacy and ultimately, a World War.

  • @MagnoliaLoon ~ hey Magnolia..reading all these comments really made me cry...I'll be ok..lol. My mom is gone, my dad is still around, a korean war vet....I asked him why he didn't listen to his "records" anymore, meaning all this beautiful music...and he said "It reminds me of your mother..and I just can't" ....THATS how powerful memory making music is......I will listen for him :o)......SQ1

  • reminds me of my late mother

  • I was born in the wrong era! Damn it!

  • @Manic205 Omg me too! I have always loved the old Glen Miller/Frank Sinatra era type of songs rather than the Modern songs these days. It always never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It's emotional feel is unconditional. And I'm only 15 LOL ....

  • @Manic205 good one- totaly agree wiv u!

  • Yeah, simply awesome. Mom and Dad had GREAT music :)

  • @jansoars1981 You give me hope that all is not lost for young folk.

You go out and talk your contemporaries into listening to real music and we old doddering musicians will be delighted to provide it, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Must warn you that you got your work cut out!!

    best wishes...sax player.

  • This makes me go all fuzzy round the edges. love it.

  • What a wonderful way to start the new year, listening to this great song.

  • Ohhh my soul

  • Should feel the need to take some quality time. Just listen to Glenn Miller and the Band.

Your disappointments and heart aches might not vanish but they can be contained in the sentiment of the music. The capacity of the magic to dissolve your cares is ageless. We while still in life touch heaven with the most wonderful music.

Glenn you are truly inspired - Thank You

  • Also, thank you, Russell, for using this song for the middle of "The Empty Child" and the beginning of the end of "The Doctor Dances".

  • My Father, Zeke Zarchy (Glenn's first trumpet and Master Sargeant), was the last person to speak to Major Glenn before he flew off for Paris. Up until we lost Dad at 93 years old, he still had vivid memories of the Big Band days and it's priceless style of music. But mainly of what a wonderful friend Glenn was.

Look up Zeke Zarchy on YT, see a great interview where Dad talks about Glenn, with background music from that era. You'll be in for a treat.

Keep on Swingin' and Happy New Year All!

I wish I could have been there with my great uncles and grandparents that lived and fought through those tough years. You have to have taste to appreciate this sound. Thank God for all of you that lived those times and kept Americans from being speaking German. Toughest generation that will never be followed.

  • A Bizarre Collection Of Puzzles by The Enigma

  • Have to agree with you about the genius of Glenn Miller but WWII was not senseless. Without it we probably would not be able to listen to this music today. Thank God for the sacrifices so many made to allow us the freedom to hear this music!!

  • @bci76179 Glenn was a real true hero, recent bio tells it was not the plane.....red white and blue--I get it now......and I have become a real Glenn Miller fan.

  • no.3 of my "secret" songs.i´m NOT religious.or shit like that.but maybe too much melancholic at this time!!! and i hope dad wherever you are,you know i miss you!!! so many happy times.if i listen to this,i see my parents dance to this....wish to meet them again only 15minutes...i would give my life for this 15minutes.if you like music, listen and understand.glenn miller an icon, genius,he was searching always for his own orchestra sound and wrote this for his wife....and died in the senseless WW2!

  • @TheSuendenfall Take care of yourself.

You can make good memories for others too. I'm trying to make them for my four grandsons now- by playing this music for them.

Want to make some people feel really good? Take some of these recordings- Miller, Shaw, Goodman, Lombardo, -lots of them- into a nursing home- ask permission to play these tunes in the common room.

You'll see lots of smiles on some dear old faces. They're remembering too.

    -Bill in Canada

  • @baghend you are right Bill, the old guys said listen again, I finally got it....I am classically trained and a punk rocker, all genres are good...I really like it now, the lead lines are very complex.....enjoyed the recent Glenn Miller bio, he was a real hero, the true story was not the plane, I really have respect and delight knowing the historic contrast of that era now......cheers. oh and keep dancing.

  • Thnaks for your reply- I admire (and am jealous of) your musical training and talent-

Slam dancing to Beethoven? I'd pay to see that!

Check out soome of the Artie Shaw recordings with Helen Forrest- Deep Purple, They Say, and many others. And listen to Goodmans Carnegie Hall (1938) rendition of Sing Sing Sing- with the Gene Krupa solo on drums- fantastic- you'll love it all.

I'll keep dancing if you keep listening.

    -Bill in Canada

  • just heard this on Doctor Who, its beautiful

  • Great great music. Thanks for this. Such a treat to hear real music.

  • Thumbs up if memories of your grandparents brought you here.

  • @MichieHoward how about mom and dad??

  • @histre101 Nope I'm almost 29, my parents were born in 1953 and 1958 respectively. So Glenn Miller really belongs to my Grandparents. My grandpa was in a big band for years (trombone and trumpet). And my grandma would hum Glenn Miller melodies all time, particularly while doing housework. LOL

  • @MichieHoward now that is very cool....your grandparents showed you how it goes! And Mom and Dad showed you how to rock! Nice! Does my heart good to know....

  • @histre101 Yeah, listening to Glenn Miller makes their presence in my heart even more alive. Hopefully can pass it along to my sons. Had my youngest swinging to Louie Armstrong, my dad particulary happy, said it make my grandma cry to see her great grandson dancing to Louie.

  • @MichieHoward That is freaking awesome! I'm sure that it put a song in your grandma's heart to see someone of this generation bringing her back a great memory from a better time in music.

  • How could 68 people dislike this??

Its the most romantic, beatiful song ever and i never tire of it. i could listen to it all day.

  • LOST, season 1. When Sayid fixes the radio it picks up this song :D

  • the best love song ever

<3 Trumpet and Glen Miller :)

  • One word- Timeless

  • Growing up every Sunday mom would put on about 7 LP's on the turntable - Glenn Miller was always a choice. I'm a child of the 70's and I love Lynrd Skynrd to Led Zeppelin, but this music feeds the soul. My parents danced to Glenn Miller in New York in 1939 before the world almost died. My dad was gone for 5 years - very bittersweet music, this is.

  • @Santacruzlyn --I'm also with you. Grew up with it myself. As me & my family w/ bros. who also grew up w/ R&R in the 70's. Loved to hear how music was then. My Father's treasure was Glen Miller & Benny Goodman. Boy did he love to dance too. Every era has it's time. Classic & Timeless.

  • Classic track and featured in this weeks episode of BlueBloods .....

  • I think I was born in the wrong era

  • "I can't remember when I felt this young.....really, I can't!"

Always remember this song from The Simpsons, such a wonderful song as well as most of Glenn Miller's work is

  • No words can describe the experience of this song, just thoughts. This song could break my will at any time, most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Glen Miller was the greatest band leader of the 1940s, this song alone can prove it. My friends wouldn't understand, but that doesn't matter. Tears, beautiful.

  • Golden Girls brought me here!!! At 19 yrs old! :D

  • timeless perfection

  • I played this on piano ^-^ I love Glenn Miller!

  • This used to be pop music, if that doesnt say something about the level effort that went into music back then I dont know what does, but aside form the music the 40s werent that great of a time and I'm glad that all of my friends enjoy (somewhat) equality and employment opportunities, not all things in the past were as great as we like to remember them, but the music was just bloody brilliant.

  • Bioshock made me love this xD

  • im a nostalgic person...and i don't know why....hope the era will come back and bring my self on top of the world

  • They played this song on my grandfather's funeral.

  • My school band is playing this and I am the clarinettist! I love this music and I am 16, so I just wanted you all to know that we do still enjoy this music!

  • 66 people's ears don't work.

  • It reaches to the heart.

  • I'm 42 years old and remember watching my grandparents dance to this great song. I'd give my left arm if today's younger crowd would listen and dance to great songs like this.
