You have any tips for landing the 182 since it is so nose heavy? I just started flying this for my high performance endorsement and boy is it tricky to land.
Do you have any tips for landing. I flew one today so I can get my high performance endorsement and I noticed it is very heavy at the nose and flaring is a lot tougher than the usual 172 I fly. Any tips would be appreciated.
Dear hafunny2, Yes, I agree the 182 drops very quickly if you pull the power all the way back. I configure the plane for landing speed (around 75kt) with some power in, never idle. The plane then lands fine. Also, never chop the power, even during the flare, just slowly let it out. Hope that helps?
@KD1video Alright I'll try that tomorrow when I fly. My instructor had me configured for 65 on short final and chop the power. I'll try a little more speed and keep some power in. What do you think the manifold pressure is around when your in your flare?
@hafunny2 Well, I tried 65, and had the high sink rate you are talking about. I'm flying the 182T, with a 3-blade prop. My instructor had me at 95-85-75 for downwind, base, final. Manifold? I'm thinking 15, but don't quote me on that. I would pull the power all the way out, then add just a touch, and just keep it at 70-75 on final.
@KD1video Ok sounds good I'll try it today. I also fly a 2005 C182T with the 3 bladed prop. So I'll just try 70-75 on final and keep a little power in and see how it goes. Thanks I appreciate it.
@hafunny2: this is the pattern formula for the C182(non-turbo) that I teach my students:
downwind (abeam #s): 15"/10 deg/95 kts
base: 13"/20 deg/85 kts
final: as needed, usually around 11"/30 deg/75 kts
keep power in until starting the flare, then slowly to idle. also, run nose-up trim throughout the flare to decrease elevator forces, which are much heavier than the 172. it makes for a smoother arrival. if you're light, say pilot only w/ 1/2 fuel and light winds, you can use 70kts on final.
Thanks for that. Just bought a new Sony cam and still wondering how to turn it on !! Looks like I need to get some practice and a Patch Cord Adaptor then. Many thanks...will let you know how I get on. I have just got my new C182T as well and still getting to know that. :-)
Thanks. If you have a camera with a mic input, you can use a patch cord adapter to plug directly into the intercom system to record all cockpit communications.
oooo a 182T, Ive only flown in one, never flew it. I do fly a 182R, quite a bit older than this one, but I love the 182. The 172 is kinda annoying to fly to me after Ive flown a 182. Sure they are quite similar, but I like the power, 3100 mtow, and the room inside.
Well, the 182 has a big engine, so it's not quiet. Sure, you can talk in the cockpit without headphones, but then it would be difficult to communicate with the tower or other pilots in the pattern.
Like FSX...As real is gets!

did you cut the video on the first landing because it was hard, or because you landed before the threshold? :D

Cool, thanks for the comment. I hadn't thought of going full screen on high quality.

thanks. but i am 6 foot 5, will i fit in the plane as a pilot ?

In a Cessna 182, yes. It is very spacious for a single engine piston aircraft, and the seats adjust up and down.
