Reading the light novels will tell that Nero is Vergil's son. Vergil basically did a prostitute, that prostitute abandoned Nero, and Nero grew up as an orphan.
In terms of Nelo vs Nero, Japanese doesn't have the English sounds R or L. It has an apical postalveolar flap that is used in transliterations of non-Japanese words that have R's and L's. Usually by default they use R's, but sometime in translation they use L's to stylize the name. That's what's going on here. In Japanese Nero (ネロ) and Nelo Angelo (ネロ・アンジェロ) are written the same way. According to Japanese Wiki, the author's post script in the second DMC novel hints that Nelo is Vergil's son.
@Austropolis Glad someone actually understands this. I'm just going to go ahead and refer that "Nero Angelo" is the correct form, because it derives from Italian. This "Nero Angelo" means "Black Angel". A lot of other names, as you know, derive from Italian as well, Credo, Diabolica Sanctus, should be Diabolico, I think, because in Portuguese, the "a" at the end indicates that it is a female, and being Portuguese and Italian similar languages, I'd go with Diabolico, indicating a male.

But Nero is also connected to Sparda. Berial says ''You are just like HE was'', ''he'' being Sparda. Also, Nero wears red and blue. Combine the two and you get purple, Sparda's colour. Sanctus said that Nero carries the blood of Sparda, which could mean all sorts of things. It could mean he carries Vergil's blood or Sparda's, it could mean he is related to Sparda in some way, nobody knows. Like I said, we'll have to wait and see.

@darklordmephisto15 Dante is way too young to be Nero's father, Dante is about 29 in DMC4, and Nero is 17 or 19, can't remember which of the two. So Dante isn't his father, Vergil isn't either, and Sparda isn't since he died. But the DMC4 manual has this page at the end that says: 'A shadow knight rose up, holding an enchanted sword named after me'. That shadow knight is Sparda, holding the sword Sparda. Does this mean there are two Spardas? Let me know what you think.
Nelo Angelo is obviously the ghastly demon form possessing Nero. You can tell from Nelo Angelo's horns, which point downward. Although Nero's DT also looks like Vergil's DT because of the arm/sheath that holds Yamato. But I guess that's logical, since Nelo Angelo is Vergil. Capcom can change Nelo Angelo's appearance a bit if they wanted to. Gotta wait for DMC 5 to know the whole story.
@Zanmatt2g That's true. Anyway, Nero obviously has something to do with Nelo Angelo (Nelo is a mistranslation of Nero). Maybe the Order created Nero from Nelo Angelo's (Vergil's) DNA. I'm having trouble believing that Nero was orphaned and left on the Order's doorstep. Could be a bunch of crap, if you ask me. And if he was orphaned, then not by Sparda, since he died before Dante and Vergil were born.

Yeah, Nero Angelo looks different in DMC1, but the only thing that's different is that the sword sheath isn't present in DMC1, because Nero Angelo uses his Zweihander, not the Yamato. Oh, and in DMC1 he has some sort of cape. But I guess the spirit demon behind Nero could be Vergil's Devil Trigger, even though Vergil's DT doesn't look like that either.
I wish Vergil would have his own story in DMC3, thumbs up if you agree. Plus, I like how in Vergils story the boss fight Vergil is dressed in red so when his hair goes down you're fighting Dante with Yamato. XD
hmmm... i may be wrong so do correct me. From what i understand in DMC their weapons are the embodiment or the physical representation of their power. So if nero uses the power of Yamato.. which is the sword of virgil, then he also uses the power of virgil which is why they have similarities....
Nero isnt Nelo Angelo, Vergil is, Nero's devil trigger takes the form of vergils because of Yamato, since the ghost weild yamato, it would take the form of Yamato's weilder

in order dmc 3 was the very first game because it was before he named his shop at the end he called it devil may cry because of what lady said about his brother and in dmc 1 trish betrays dante and later on after bein saved tries 2 apologize but cries dante tells her she has become more human and not just a devil because devils never cry he then call his shop devils never cry and if u look carefully u can see in the rest of the series it says on his shop devils never cry
nelo is unlocked as a costume after you beat hard mode for vergil i think. The reason he's fighting a red vergil is because capcom was too lazy to actually make a dante boss for DMC3 SE. so they just kept the vergil boss and turned him red to resemble dante. at least when it rains his hair goes down he somewhat looks like dante.

@DrGregoryy The true story goes is that Mundus over powered Vergil. Try as he might Vergil could not defeat the powerful demon. Mundus reconized a son of sparda and wanted to control him so he shot a piece of his finger from the statue he uses as his body at Vergils face creating a corruption mask. And sense vergil was a son of Sparda he gave him his fathers clothing and demon form of Nelo Angelo.

alright, we do know that Dante beat Vergil (to bad it wasnt reversed T T)then he fell to the Place , i think its callled Place of Fallen Warriors or almost like that then we know Vergil fought with Mundus and then Mundus corrupted Vergils soul but now my theory: before Mundus finished "Verg" he splitted his Soul in 2 parts good and evil and kept 1 part in his body and 1 in Yamato

Nelo Angelo is my fav demon form, this form is a BEAST, it took me 1 hour to beat bloody place with Angelo, and took me an hour and a half to beat with Sparda. the good thing about Virigil is that he can have all his weapons with him at all times, sadly Dante can only have 2 guns and 2 side-arms.

Mentioned in the manual, a number of demons appeared suddenly from the Mitis Forest and attacked the city. Luckily, Nero was present in the scene and he exterminated all of the demons. During this incident, Kyrie (labeled as the "private female citizen"), who was a traveling companion of Nero, was injured with Nero receiving a minor injury to his right shoulder. Also because of this incident, Nero's sword, the Red Queen, was damaged and was sent for repair.
DMC1 is much better than DMC2. It has a lot more horror game elements than every other game in the series too (It was initially going to be a Resident Evil game). Probably the 2nd best game in the series behind DMC3.
DMC2 is fucking terrible though. Everything about is bad.

Dante notices that Nelo Angelo is his brother after Dante defeats Nelo Angelo at the third fight.
It's ambiguous whether Vergil is alive or not since DMC4 staff officially announced that Vergil is "missing" and didn't specifically say that he is "dead".

@sweetiecandypie well, if you have seen the cover of the 5th game, then you should know. i think i saw the cover of teh 5th game case and it had vergil on it. i think he is alive. still, i think it is really weird that they would do that. i cant wait fo rthe 5th game to come out so we can see. although, i wish there was a game or any anime that would have the bad guy win. hope devil may cry is one of them.

But Nero is also connected to Sparda. Berial says ''You are just like HE was'', ''he'' being Sparda. Also, Nero wears red and blue. Combine the two and you get purple, Sparda's colour. Sanctus said that Nero carries the blood of Sparda, which could mean all sorts of things. It could mean he carries Vergil's blood or Sparda's, it could mean he is related to Sparda in some way, nobody knows. Like I said, we'll have to wait and see.

@darklordmephisto15 Dante is way too young to be Nero's father, Dante is about 29 in DMC4, and Nero is 17 or 19, can't remember which of the two. So Dante isn't his father, Vergil isn't either, and Sparda isn't since he died. But the DMC4 manual has this page at the end that says: 'A shadow knight rose up, holding an enchanted sword named after me'. That shadow knight is Sparda, holding the sword Sparda. Does this mean there are two Spardas? Let me know what you think.

Nelo Angelo is obviously the ghastly demon form possessing Nero. You can tell from Nelo Angelo's horns, which point downward. Although Nero's DT also looks like Vergil's DT because of the arm/sheath that holds Yamato. But I guess that's logical, since Nelo Angelo is Vergil. Capcom can change Nelo Angelo's appearance a bit if they wanted to. Gotta wait for DMC 5 to know the whole story.

@Zanmatt2g That's true. Anyway, Nero obviously has something to do with Nelo Angelo (Nelo is a mistranslation of Nero). Maybe the Order created Nero from Nelo Angelo's (Vergil's) DNA. I'm having trouble believing that Nero was orphaned and left on the Order's doorstep. Could be a bunch of crap, if you ask me. And if he was orphaned, then not by Sparda, since he died before Dante and Vergil were born.

Yeah, Nero Angelo looks different in DMC1, but the only thing that's different is that the sword sheath isn't present in DMC1, because Nero Angelo uses his Zweihander, not the Yamato. Oh, and in DMC1 he has some sort of cape. But I guess the spirit demon behind Nero could be Vergil's Devil Trigger, even though Vergil's DT doesn't look like that either.

hmmm... i may be wrong so do correct me. From what i understand in DMC their weapons are the embodiment or the physical representation of their power. So if nero uses the power of Yamato.. which is the sword of virgil, then he also uses the power of virgil which is why they have similarities....

in order dmc 3 was the very first game because it was before he named his shop at the end he called it devil may cry because of what lady said about his brother and in dmc 1 trish betrays dante and later on after bein saved tries 2 apologize but cries dante tells her she has become more human and not just a devil because devils never cry he then call his shop devils never cry and if u look carefully u can see in the rest of the series it says on his shop devils never cry

nelo is unlocked as a costume after you beat hard mode for vergil i think. The reason he's fighting a red vergil is because capcom was too lazy to actually make a dante boss for DMC3 SE. so they just kept the vergil boss and turned him red to resemble dante. at least when it rains his hair goes down he somewhat looks like dante.

@GinoL my opinion is why can't people except that nero is just a new character that happens to wield a devil arm and has the ability to unlock the powers of yamato. for the very same reason , his arm completes yamato as that of dante and vergils amulet with force edge to create sparda's blade. Nero was wounded and happens to kill demons as a human, he gained his arm probaby becuz of the hellgates. either way they never said vergil or dante is related to nero. it is possibe becuz he is an orphan.

Mundus reconized a son of sparda and wanted to control him so he shot a piece of his finger from the statue he uses as his body at Vergils face creating a corruption mask. And sense vergil was a son of Sparda he gave him his fathers clothing and demon form of Nelo Angelo.

Nelo Angelo is my fav demon form, this form is a BEAST, it took me 1 hour to beat bloody place with Angelo, and took me an hour and a half to beat with Sparda. the good thing about Virigil is that he can have all his weapons with him at all times, sadly Dante can only have 2 guns and 2 side-arms.

DMC1 is much better than DMC2. It has a lot more horror game elements than every other game in the series too (It was initially going to be a Resident Evil game). Probably the 2nd best game in the series behind DMC3.
DMC2 is fucking terrible though. Everything about is bad.
