If I decide to disconnect my electricity for a year, it does not lower the amount of emissions produced by the power generators.

@TriggaTap Trees consume around 1/5 of a ton each and they take a long time to grow. Were already planting a lot & it would be impossible to offset by planting trees alone. @markvansomething I understand that it is only the big polluters who get taxed. Just because they are the ones who are taxed does not mean they are the ones who bear the cost. They will just pass the cost onto consumers. This means there will be no change in the amount of pollution emitted, just a change in the cost of using energy which causes the emissions. If I decide to disconnect my electricity for a year, it does not lower the amount of emissions produced by the power generators.

One tonne of coal sells for $330
The pollution fee on that tonne is only $1.90
It will not "cripple mining industry" or "destroy Australian economy" as Abbott claims. Soon you will see its BS.
When we take rubbish to the tip we pay the fee ourselves. We do not ask someone else to pay. Big polluters should pay their pollution fee themselves using their record profits, not pass the cost on to consumers.
It's no excuse to fire workers or up prices.

It may decrease pollution, but there is no evidence that will slow or stop temperature increases. I hope it works, otherwise it will have been a very expensive and laborious experiment. Australia supplies China with the coal to fire 100 chinese coal fired power stations. Ausralia supplies 50% of the international steel industry with coal to produce steel. The chilean volcano spewed so much carbon dioxide in only 4 days of erupting that it totally negated everything we have ever done.
Why.......why is nobody bringing up these subjects? I sent these questions to the minister for mines and energy via my local LNP member and THREE TIMES we were ignored, no reply was forthcoming.

just adding an advantage of the 'carbon tax' i learnt from hsc economics.
It may not contribute to solving the climate change problem (as some of you have stated), but it forces the economy to pay for the social costs of carbon pollution.
With this tax, we are able to minimise this so called 'market failure'. e.g. carbon emission causes pollution in our local atmosphere which will undoubtedly cause respiratory illnesses resulting to decreasing productivity.
This tax helps to solve this issue.

If you think logically about it and see how economists from other countries have responded they all agree this makes sense. 35 other countries already have some sort of carbon tax in place. Some of them since the 90's. It works and we are falling behind. We are the biggest carbon polluters per person in the world.

@TriggaTap Trees consume around 1/5 of a ton each and they take a long time to grow. Were already planting a lot & it would be impossible to offset by planting trees alone. The tax is going to pay for several billion dollars of research and development into renewable energies. This will end up becoming a viable alternative and nip carbon in the butt for good. I am 24 have just finished my Applied Science Degree. What do you have? Nothing but assumptions and BS statements. Get educated fool!

@roguemale57 Fact: Australia relies heavily on the mining of natural resources to produce exports and money to help run the economy. Taxing carbon on these big companies, especially in Western Australia, will cause them to lose big money, and inevitably look elsewhere. Costing our entire economy.

They are in no way attempting to stop this problem (Climate Change). If they were sincere about it, they would be proposing alternatives to minimize carbon usage in industry and enforcing that instead. Gillard is a joke and her compulsive lying is becoming too much.

Anyway, what about Abbott's compulsive lying? E.g. meeting up with Archbishop George Pell before his election campaign last year, parental leave entitlements, or what about the famous "shit happens" interview?

I think the reason Gillard is crap is because she's trying to somehow be both left and right, while trying to deal with all the opinions of a minority govt.
