God all you fuckers that are replying to Surgical5Stalingrad dont know shit about car audio. One of the most important things is a solid ground from amp to your chasis no more with a wire no more than 3ft. unless you have extra batteries sittin in your trunk i doubt ur ground is 3ft long. plus if you put it to your battery thats just another with a chance to short and fuck ur battery and possibly ur whole car electric system up.
@Myddraal1 for higher power systems, connecting directly to the chassis (boot of car) only works if the battery is connected with the same gauge wire to the chassis (near the battery) also. Otherwise you run the risk of a bad ground connection and can damager your amp / speakers that way also.
@ads861 Good point but any audiophile knows if your gonna have a high power system before you even think of installing it you need the Big 3 upgrade, thus solving the problem you have presented.
Just take the 2 foot long 12" sonotube, put 2 round wood on top and bottom of the tube and cut a hole on one of the wooden sides so the sub can fit..make a little hole for the cable on back and thats it! Easier than in this vid! lol
It's a good demonstration, but the time, commitment and money is not worth it over just buying it in a shop. Yeah, hobby-wise this looks great, but hey not for me.
@Surgical5Stalingrad soo... are you saying the negative of the battery doesn't connect to the chassis of the car? the only reason you would run a wire to chassis and not the negative of the battery is too save running and extra wire th your boot of the car. either way you do it you always have to connect the ground on the amp to the negative terminal on the battery.
the ground is connected to the frame, which is connected to the neg terminal of the battery... dumbass. even if you connected directly to the negative terminal of the battery, still grounded to the frame.
@Surgical5Stalingrad the negative end of the battery is grounded in the front bay. with higher power subs, it's actually recommended to connect direcly to the -ve end of the battery
LOL. A sonotube is going to be worlds better than a 40$ store bought "enclosure". In fact it could blow away most high priced name brand subs. Check out the early SVS subwoofers.
I bought two enclosures for my 12" subs, $40... They even have the material on the outside to match my truck interior.. took me 20 minutes to drive to the audio store, buy them and come back home.. You guys failed..
@SwatbotDubstep I don't think you know how the YouTube partnership program works. Likes/dislikes don't earn any money, and subscriptions don't either, it's all views. this is the most viewed SYSTM episode, by far. I doubt one misleading title would cost many subscribers either.
You know...I already have fios, i've got a car, I don't watch tv, I don't need X video Game...STOP WITH YOUR FUCKING ADS IT MAKES ME NOT WANT TO BUY YOUR SHIT KTHXBYE
Unless you're using baltic birch, MDF has better properties for speaker enclosures. Don't disillusion people, you'll have people running out buying exterior grade plywood instead of MDF because it "won't flex". Wrong, dead wrong.
Also, you're recommending people use a router with a $60 jig and a $20 cutting bit to accommodate your stupid project. Explain to me again how this is supposed to save people money?
it cost me 100 bucks to make my enclosure, it would of costs me 30 to just buy one, but the satisfaction of telling people that you made it, is priceless
I thought you were trying to save money by using sonotube. Building the same size boxes out of 3/4" mdf would've been about the same price (if not cheaper) & a lot less hassle. Also, why does your "plywood" look like mdf?
@marcopacol If you are actually serious, you'll probably blow your amp, unless it's rated to run at 18 volts, which I doubt it would be. Most amps are only rated to run at up to 14.5 volts, certain amps can be run at up to 16 volts, but I've never heard of an 18 volt amp.
Ply wood is inferior to MDF in terms of sound quality.
I use 3/4 inch mdf to build my 4.2 cubic inch sub box. Its sealed, and im running 2 bassworx 4 series (high excursion) and theres no way that box is breaking. no bracing either =p no resonance from it.
mdf cost less. mdf is denser, allowing tighter seals. it is easier to work with. if you use ply, you love wasting money =)
did anyone actually make this? i couldnt understand eminem over here when he was saying the steps to cutting it, plus, i didnt come here for a stupid enclosure
a real enclosure without a port is pretty cheap these days so theres not really a point to making your own. i ported mine and added some light cotton sheets to reduce air noise. i have a crappy amp that i wire up to a computer power supply and bam, self powered sub unit for my surround sound.
This has nothing to do with building a subwoofer, just how to make a horrible sounding crap encosure for a car subwoofer (wich is also the worst sound you can buy compared to hifi units.
I would change the name of this video because they do not in fact build a subwoofer, they build a box for a subwoofer. also this is not cheap after you buy all the stuff in the video including the tools. If was going to spend this amount of money I would do it correctly.
$50- $60 i laugh at you HAHAHAHHA i bought mdf at rona cost me $8 for 3'X3' sheet and made a sealed box for my new clarion 10 inch and it only took me 10 minutes to cut and another 10 to glue waited an hr and it was done and it is built to specs simple.
$175 for a shitty sub and about $30 for 1 shitty enclosure ($205 each)? you guys used Craigslist for the amp , im pretty sure you can find 2 subs already in a REAL enclosure for less than $400
@0akie13 .... good point , i didnt notice the shirt before lmao . he must of bought it from the same jew that sold him that 40 dollar flea market sub for 175
Ok. These guys are talking about cutting costs and making a cheap setup, then telling you to buy JL??!! the most overpriced equipment on the market?? MDF IS cheap, easy to work with, and I had a lot of fun making my enclosure. I made it for my car, but the same principles apply. I bought my entire setup for -$500 and it has been bumping strong for 2 years. I love how these guys are messing around with this sonotube shit and then telling you to spend $800 on just the subwoofer and the amp.
