What a lot of guys probably don't know either is that many of you guys who may have played high school basketball did some drills called the Maravich drills. Almost every high school and college basketball teams incorporated the drills with their practice.
Another thing to consider is the time era. Showsmanship and entertainment was just as important as anything. Not only was he a great scorer and passer, but he was a great entertainer.
@yeon Example, jason williams (white and roughly the same athletic abilty, however shorter than pete) made fools of the best defenders in the nba for a period - look up the play where gary payton jock ended up in the cieling. Now nba guards were on literally on a string against him, pete could do all that plus shoot the lights out and he was very intelligent. So stop before you make yourself sound more uneducated on the subject than you already have dumbass. You clearly dont know the game.
@yeaon723 Also I have a feeling the athleticism comment is a tad racist and flat ignorrant. He played in the same era as Lew alcindor, walt frazier, bob mcadoo etc... would you say the same of them. Idiots like you feed right into it. Pete absolutlely shredded people in the college ranks and was a damn good pro.
I really don't understand all these people trying to exacerbate Maravich's accomplishments and forte in the game. Really, this man could play the game better than most other people then and now. He made the defenders a puppet because he basically controlled their every because of his skill. He wasn't just born with it. He practiced hours on end consistently doing drills that most might consider irrelevant. He bettered himself and became the ultimate show-man in college basketball.

Pete Maravich is the greatest college hoopster of all time. even surpassing Lew Alcindor (Jabar) Why you ask? Who else could pull off that goofy white boy swag, moustache, and play as beautifully as he did? He could go between the legs, around the back, behind the back, over the shoulder, 180, assist to himself, and lay it up as smooth as silk and leave you crosseyed. Hell, he probbably could have fucked your wife right in front of you and leave you trying to guess who did it.
@winningoverhere complete rubbish. You are actually building up a guys greatness by talking about hot dog stuff he did. give me a break. His teams never even got close to the NCAA tourney. At the same time Pete played Lanier was leading a weak team to the semis in the tounry and Bird led his team to the finals. Maravich is the most overrated player in the history of basketball. FACT.
@Reaktionar idiot. the object of basket is to win. Not to make hot dog plays.
Now find me another so called great player who almost always played on losing teams..Good luck.. great player make their teams good. gunners have good stats and go nowhere.. i will be waiting to see the list of great players whos teams always lost like gunners.
@45arther He is the greatest ball handler ever, no matter if he won or not. That makes him an all time great and someone truly joyful to watch. That is why this video exists and why people here like him. Retard.
@45arther Well then I guess Brian Scalabrine is the greatest basketball player of all time then since he led the Celtics to championships. Sure Maravich might have had little success in total game wins, but the fact is his team sucked. The only reason he played for LSU was because his dad was the coach. I'm not basing his succes on some "hot dog" play he made at one point in time. I'm basing it on the fact that he put up consistant numbers, and those "hot dog" plays came as easy as breathing.
Maravich played before the advent of the three-point line. Years later, former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots he took. Brown calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot (5.8 m), 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, lifting the player's career average to 57 points per game.
@kylegforeman pete always played in a huge scoring era. Did Brown talk about that. And if there was a 3 point line you would be guarded against taking 3 point shots. Totally different. Silly to bring it up/
@kylegforeman What a crock of shit. Pistol Pete would be eaten up by point guards in the D league if he was playing in todays game. He had virtually no athleticism but fancy passing that was ahead of his time. Guards now are faster, stronger and play D a hell of a lot better than people in that time.
@yeon723 There's still a place in the NBA for extremely skilled players with marginal athleticism. Kevin Love comes immediately to mind. Or how about this, since we're talking guards, if Pistol Pete couldn't score for crap but still had all his other skills, he'd be Ricky Rubio who is going to be a solid if not great point guard for years to come.
@kylegforeman keep in mind people didnt play defense way out like that, they would play off the farther guys went out, since no extra points were rewarded for longer shots
Maravich was such an incredible dribbler that very few defenders could stay with him. He was also a tall player (6'5") with a very quick release allowing him to just shoot over players who managed to stay with him. Look at his shot at 4:30. Nobody today could stop that shot.
He also took a lot of shots. His father was the coach at LSU and basically let him shoot as much as he liked. Some rough math indicates he took about 50 shots per game.
I was blessed to have watched him play several times against Tulane in New Orleans when I was in high school. We'd show up early just to watch him warm up. He was our idol.
What makes a man a legend? Consider the night that Pete had such an awe inspiring performance in a win against bitter conference rival Georgia, it was the Bulldog's cheerleaders that carried him off the court as time expired.
@hbrennan14 no one thinks jordan was the first to wear it... I'm sure many people wore number 23 but people just see 23 and see jordan because it was his NBA number and he made a brand around 23 which is perfectly fine because he was the best player ever....

@ayuda31 The ultimate LSU tstarting 5 of all time: Chris Jackson, Pistol Pete, Garrett Temple, Stromile Swift, Shaquille O Neal. 6th man: Tyrus Thomas
whats amazing is he does all this without playing above the rim because of god given ability. also you notice if you took away the 3 steps that todays players get they wouldnt even be able to score 20 a game. pete scored 44 a game. Astounding! Ive played the gme and seen many players in last 35 years. nothin like this have i ever seen. this is basketball. This is a work of art. his team could be so bad and lose every game and it would still be worth price of admission. Pistol pete Forever!
people have to also remember that back then you couldn't put your hand on the side of the ball or you'd be called for palming instantly, unlike today. so pete's ball handling is all the more impressive. that's why older players look a little geeky dribbling the ball compared to today's players. i'd like to see today's players try making pete's moves without carrying the ball from the side.
Most people are ignorant of basketball pre-80's (remember it was dying...).
However, as much respect as one can have for Maravich, it's important to note how his talent was wasted in the NBA. Instead of becoming one of the greatest players of all-time, his rep. remains that of a ball-handling wizard with a penchant for scoring. Fantastic if he's a shooting guard, but his first duty was to distribute. Yet, there he was getting 6.7 assists to 5 (FIVE!) turnovers in a season.
@doomie316 shut the fuck up u uneducated bitch when he played college ball as u can see in the video there was only white guys and he was very mediocre if he plaed 2day in college hes have 4.0 a game instead of 40
@fesdude100 uneducated? i bet you dont even know that tree rollins tried to bite danny ainges finger off in the 83 playoffs. you propably think lebron is the best, you propably dont even know how to pronounce patrick ewings last name. larry bird and kevin mchale played against some of the greatest african american players to ever play and dominated winning three championsips in one decade. i bet you dont know any of the players i just mentioned except for lebron. learn ball then talk shit bitch.
@fesdude100 oh and you are the STUPIDEST basket ball fan if you think he was mediocre, saying white guys suck at basket ball is flat out racist. George mikan won 5 championships and is in the top 50 all time players bob cousy won 6 and john havlicek won 8. John stockton leads the all time leaderboard in the nba in both steals AND assists, chris mullin is considered one of the greatest outside shooters of all time. and pistol pete once dropped 68 points against the knicks in 77.
@doomie316 u are fuckin retarded im white dumb bitch im not saying white people cant play basketball im saying if there wasnt so much racial tension going on when maravich was in college and there was more black players it would have been alot harder 2 score ...suck it u ugly bitch wilt ( black) 100 points kobe (black) 81 points bill russell (black) 11 championships micheal jordan (black) 7 mvps get your fucking facts straight ! FUCK YOUR MOTHERS GRAVE!
@fesdude100 my mother doesnt have a grave yet, shes no where close to dying. why are you so mad bro? it definitely sounds like your saying white people cant play i know all those players accomplished that you dont need to tell me, oh and btw jordan won 6 finals mvps and 5 regular season mvps not 7 so you get your facts straight. all this rage is making you sound stupid little child.
@fesdude100 sure you would lebron dick rider, you dont even know who i am, what i look like or how tall i am. you dont know anything about me except that i know more about basketball then you ever will little child.
@doomie316 ik ur a devils fan so go suck martie brodeurs dick retarded little fadget it deonst mteer ur size i can tell u suck and i whoop open up a can of whoop ass on u nigga
@fesdude100 lol why u so mad that my team has 3 stanley cups in 8 years? i know you have a mom so go suck your moms dick, i know you your subscribed to nba so go suck nbas dick look i can argue like you! i know you suck because i looked at your channel and saw that you like a certain thing. wow im arguing about something like you do you FAGGOT i know size DOESNT MATTER i wasnt implying that. god damn you spell like a child are you sure your not a child? racist bigot dont even say the n word.
@fesdude100 who said i gave up? i have no reason to give up you however do, your making yourself look stupid. im pretty sure i have won this argument.
@Walnut8711 am i all talk when i bust u and ur mother in thwe jaw so badly u both cant talk the rest of ur life? 430 am 2night ur mother will be dead...
man this man was inovating you didnt see any basketball players doing moves like that in those days, he was like a mixtape, lol in my opinion best point guard ever that knee injure is what slowed him down...
he's 100909x better than D ROSE , D WAYDE, LeBron and other "stars" ... Pete just Really can play the basketball , now is only the athletics win ... Sry for my english *~!
Finally I can put a name on this young kid who gave me passion for basketball. 20 years ago I saw "The birth of a Legend" and I started to dribble. Thanks Pete !
@elder8250 OMG...I cant believe you said that because 20 years ago I saw the same movie...and it made me dribble also...LOL....looks like we didn't turn out as successful as Pete...LOL....still brings back great memories of falling in love with a game that I still feel passionate about to this day!!!
I was fortunate to see him light up the scoreboard against Alabama in 1969 in Tuscaloosa and his teammates DID know when he was about to pass it to them. I think he scored 59 or 69 that night-a record that still stands for college one-game scoring. Towards the end of the game EVERYONE was cheering for him and LSU-even us Bama fans.
Some people did some research and found that had the 3 pt line existed when Pete played college ball, he would have averaged 57.8 ppg. Wow. Not that 44 wasn't enough already.
Pistol was good. Surely not many like him. I would only compare him to Magic and Robertson. Not Jordan. Jordan excelled in an area that Pistol is not even known for. Jordan did just about anything he wanted on the court. Remember, every player in the NBA says they want to face Jordan but they really don't. Most of his opponents took a seat back to Jordan even b4 stepping on the court. But i will say Pistol exelled in college way more than Jordan. Hand down. Good Video!
I read that somebody did a study and analyzed every shot he made in college. Had there been the 3 point line, he would have averaged 13 three pointers a game and 57ppg. LOL
@holdouts WOW! Thing is you gonna take into account that a lot of things would have been different witha three point line like the spread of defence, saying that imagine how esy he would have got in the lane! probably would of scored 70 aq game ;)
@Pre00 imagine these two players almost played in the same team , i think in the atlanta hawks, pre season , then the 2 of them play one on one betting for a dinner, that is true
@Pre00 How was MJ akward to watch...he used an amazing athletic ability to put up akward shots occasionally but he was pretty fundamentally sound...not as sound as pete though.
I remember first seeing him on the Los Angeles TV news one day and hearing about those drooping socks of his that he had kept for many years. Then LSU came to Pauley Pavillion to play UCLA during the Bruins great dynasty years. Although UCLA won that night, I remember Pete scoring 38 points. It was so sad to hear when he passed away.
Maravich had amazing skills and athleticism for his day and is one of the few stars from that era who would still excel today. However, it's hard not to notice the stiffs who were defending him when he played at LSU--no one that slow could play at anything higher than the junior-college level nowadays.
The one that caught my eye in this video was soaring in for layup from acute right side, changes direction in mid air and corkscrews it up left handed off the backboard. Perhaps his greatest gift was passing the ball. It was almost a illusion of levitation and direction, but always ending up in the perfect location. Before his knee injury, he had very good elevation and lift in his legs, allowing shot selection changes. Of course, he was over 6'5" which was another advantage.
i see where kobe got that pivot/stepthough move and jordans hangtime layup, but still no one can touch those passes..wowwwww so friggin crafty on those transitions!
Im 17 and this was like watching David Blaine with a basketball. I feel like Pete stole my wallet. Why don't my favorite players today have this much creativity and skill?
You can see a teammate standing there w/ his hand on his hip at 48 secs. Haha. None of those boys were gonna see that ball unless Pete passed it to them himself.
It is a little ridiculous how many people only want to compare Pete to John Stockton, Larry Bird and Jason Williams. Because he is white? Do you know how much of an insult it is to all of those players not to compare them to the rest of the league. Those dudes are all great but Magic Johnson (who has made no secret of the influence Maravich had on him) is the most obvious comparison in regards to ball-handling and passing; his creative shooting skills are rivaled by few if any (Bird, Robertson).
His dad ruined Pete and the LSU team. Press was a horrible coach - only one winning season during Pete's tenture.

people have to also remember that back then you couldn't put your hand on the side of the ball or you'd be called for palming instantly, unlike today. so pete's ball handling is all the more impressive. that's why older players look a little geeky dribbling the ball compared to today's players. i'd like to see today's players try making pete's moves without carrying the ball from the side.

Yet, there he was getting 6.7 assists to 5 (FIVE!) turnovers in a season.

fesdude100 6 months ago
@fesdude100 uneducated? i bet you dont even know that tree rollins tried to bite danny ainges finger off in the 83 playoffs. you propably think lebron is the best, you propably dont even know how to pronounce patrick ewings last name. larry bird and kevin mchale played against some of the greatest african american players to ever play and dominated winning three championsips in one decade. i bet you dont know any of the players i just mentioned except for lebron. learn ball then talk shit bitch.
doomie316 6 months ago
@fesdude100 oh and you are the STUPIDEST basket ball fan if you think he was mediocre, saying white guys suck at basket ball is flat out racist. George mikan won 5 championships and is in the top 50 all time players bob cousy won 6 and john havlicek won 8. John stockton leads the all time leaderboard in the nba in both steals AND assists, chris mullin is considered one of the greatest outside shooters of all time. and pistol pete once dropped 68 points against the knicks in 77.

Hand down. Good Video!
srfigaro 8 months ago 2
I read that somebody did a study and analyzed every shot he made in college. Had there been the 3 point line, he would have averaged 13 three pointers a game and 57ppg. LOL

Please, what is the song? I searched all the comments below and couldn't find the current audio for the song! We need to know.
skrisos 10 months ago
I remember first seeing him on the Los Angeles TV news one day and hearing about those drooping socks of his that he had kept for many years. Then LSU came to Pauley Pavillion to play UCLA during the Bruins great dynasty years. Although UCLA won that night, I remember Pete scoring 38 points. It was so sad to hear when he passed away.
7171wolf 10 months ago
Maravich had amazing skills and athleticism for his day and is one of the few stars from that era who would still excel today. However, it's hard not to notice the stiffs who were defending him when he played at LSU--no one that slow could play at anything higher than the junior-college level nowadays.
khkartc 10 months ago
The one that caught my eye in this video was soaring in for layup from acute right side, changes direction in mid air and corkscrews it up left handed off the backboard. Perhaps his greatest gift was passing the ball. It was almost a illusion of levitation and direction, but always ending up in the perfect location. Before his knee injury, he had very good elevation and lift in his legs, allowing shot selection changes. Of course, he was over 6'5" which was another advantage.

TheKano1221 10 months ago
You can see a teammate standing there w/ his hand on his hip at 48 secs. Haha. None of those boys were gonna see that ball unless Pete passed it to them himself.
nonplayerzealot4 10 months ago
Anyone know the name of the song in the background?
razman257 10 months ago
It is a little ridiculous how many people only want to compare Pete to John Stockton, Larry Bird and Jason Williams. Because he is white? Do you know how much of an insult it is to all of those players not to compare them to the rest of the league. Those dudes are all great but Magic Johnson (who has made no secret of the influence Maravich had on him) is the most obvious comparison in regards to ball-handling and passing; his creative shooting skills are rivaled by few if any (Bird, Robertson).
