What a great moment in modern musical history. Honestly, it's hard for me to believe that some people don't like or appreciate the Beatles. They were so gifted, from such a young age. Much of the music they produced was pure genius and magical. I would bet money there will never be a band to replace them. Long live The Beatles!
I've heard about this performance, but had never seen it before. They sound just as good live as on their albums! Although it was a little hard to hear over all the girls screaming. My goodness, they were screaming, crying, and I think one nearly fainted! The bow at the end of each song is classy.
Thanks for this video. I use to listen to this group all the time when I was young. This use to be my favorite group. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Great video, but it's not the full Feb 9 performance. The Beatles sang five songs. The missing song is "I Saw Her Standing There," which started their second set.
The fat chick with the binoculars after spying her favorite "moptop"- produces a series of facial expressions that...well.....it's frightening 4:40-4:47 check it out
What great memories... I remember seeing this when I was 9... and I was hooked forever more.... a pretty spirited performance by George Harrison, considering he had a pretty severe case of the flu at the time.
this is classic. I've never seen this performance unedited or uncut. John's mic was not turned up high enough when the show aired. i once read he was cheesed off about it.
I was negative 16 months old in February of 1964 but my older brothers and sister said, that night, you couldn't even hear what the Beatles were singing because of the screaming in the audience. These filtered versions of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan must be remembered as now being filtered to diminish the screaming. Only Elvis Presley had caused such hysteria. Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.
I quote George Harrison (AKA BEST GUITARIST EVER AT 4:10) "I've heard that while the show was on there were no reported crimes, or very few. When the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan, even the criminals had a rest for 10 minutes."
This never gets old. The amount of music these guys pumped out in just 6 or 7 years was prolific on steroids. These 10 minutes changed the American music scene forever.
George Harrison explain in an interview years ago that they did a sound check on this show and left for awhile and a cleaning lady came around and cleaned the marks off of the mixing board..probably explaining why the mix was weird and John was not heard as well. They were most likely re-cueing everything at time of taping.
@blessiththechily Yeah but you hear Johns voice above Pauls in the original I wanna hold your hand. But you can't even hear him. It's like his mic is turned off.
I was seven, and absolutely glued to my grandmothers tv set. Never forget that night! No musician/composer for some 100 or two hundred years has had such an enduring impact & influence. Not bad for a what was essentially a seven year run!

The moment in history when everything changed, forever AND for better! And, we shall never see anything like it again. Thank you John, Paul, George, and Ringo for the greatest show on earth!!!
I saw this when I was 15 and at my girlfriend, Karen's house. I was fortunate to get tickets to see the Beatles live in Pittsburgh at The Civic Arena. It was the first time in my life that I was actually afraid of women. Man, if you said anything against these guys, you were dead meat!!!
@squid0862 Hey man they couldn't even spell Beetles right so who really cares about vocab. Spelling has nothing to do with the legitimacy of a statement.
@buchick10 Yeah, I completely agree!! Paul is just so bouncy & hyper & HOT all the time x) Especially when they were doing "She Loves You", he looks like the happiest kid alive x)
This is the first time I've experienced this since 1963. 9yrs old. It really sounds good.Check George at 4;00 This was the day 3 out of 5 boys went out and bought a guitar and amp the next day. Glenn Frey of the Eagles admitted he was one of them. I had to take on a paper route myself. Thanks for the post and memories. Loved It..
As brilliant and talented as they were, there were a few others, as well. Much of the Beach Boys' work is nearly as good. In fact, the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" was the Beatles' inspiration for "Sgt. Pepper". Which is why "Pet Sounds" is considered to be the #2 album of all time (right behind "Sgt Pepper"). Lennon and McCartney wanted to surpass it. They did. But "Pet Sounds" is still a tremendous creation.
Its really depressing to know that music like this is dying because of all the shit music thats out here now-a-days. Todays world is filled with talentless "musicians" who can't even play a fucking instrument! At school (I'm 16), when I ask people who their favorite artist is, they always replay Lady Gaga or The Jonas Brothers. There are some people though that say The Beatles or Led Zeppelin. The way I see it, Muse is the only hope for rock music today. If they go down, rock music may die :(
I was in the audience that night, February 9th, 1964, at the Ed Sullivan Show to hear the Beatles very first television performance. The energy in the room was electric. One of my uncles was a sound engineer for Sullivan, and I got to meet all four Beatles backstage, get my picture taken with them (I have 12), and also got all four of their autographs. They were very engaging and polite, even though it was obvious that they were pretty tired. Really good people, and very gracious.
This is one of the events those of my generation will always remember- where you were, who you were with with, eveything. 2/9/64 i was a HS senior, at a church youth group, but everything stopped when 8 rolled around. Then, these guys came on and changed everything. No band, ever, will match the impact and the incredible production of amazing songs of stunning variety as The Beatles. Ever.
I want to hold your hand sounded so out of place, probably because everyone assumed McCartney was the 'lead singer' at this point, that they even turned off Lennon's mic,So when they took out Lennons mic,the song sounds odd because Paul sings the top harmony, and with no lead vocals, which are supposed to be sung by John,it sounds cruddy.

that sound must have just been sooooo amazing and refreshing at that time. and strangely it has the same effect today. greatest rock act bar none!! nothing comes close to the beatles in rock history.
I was 5 years old and remember not being able to sleep the Friday and Saturday night before this Sunday show. It was only my mom and me and we watched in amazement and complete silence. Everything changed that night...I just didn't know it at the time.
This was the day the world changed...goodbye stale car songs and Brill Building manufactured music. Rock & Roll was back!! The Beatles changed everything and nothing would ever be the same.
Arlichar, you obviously have no idea what was happening back then. Do some research and you'll find out why these guys changed the world...
great post.... i cant quite understand the excitement? did ppl hear and see them before they came here? not xactly the greatest looking guys really...obviously the music is amazing... but why did the guys even cut hair like them? was it really needed to scream like that.... u go all way to see them and then cant even enjoy it because it s like haunted house/ rollercoaster LOL
Wow, amazing....these guys were awesome. I wasn't even born yet or thought of, lol, but so nice to see this amazing piece of history from one of my favorite bands.
I always loved their stage presence, especially John's. While Paul & George are on the left hamming it up, sharing a mic & shaking their heads, Lennon just stands there flat-footed, squared up to the mic, and fucking DEALS. What a man!
@cotchery Yes Yes I know. I just get bothered when people don't like them XD But I accept the fact that some people have no taste in some music :P Don't worry, pretty much 99% of the time I'm never bothered by it, but just for this video, I had to stick up for it ;P
@jias188 I know!! He so cute!! OMG I'm seeing him in concert on August 9th!!! I'M SO EXCITED!! I hope he's as happy as he is here :3 Haha it sounds funny for me to say that XD
The moment that changed everything. I remember it well. People could not believe the hair. Schools banned it. Parents forbid it. People stared at anyone with it. It was considered so outrageous to have hair that long, but.....it was already too late. This was the beginning of it all. Everything changed, not just music. I'll never forget this moment and thank you for posting it here. RIP George and John.
It's great to see PROFESSIONALS at work. Notice how they don't look like their in pain when they perform, unlike most of the people you see. George and John are mugging for the camera while busting some nice licks on the guitars. These guys paid their dues and it shows in their masterful live performances.

I always loved their stage presence, especially John's. While Paul & George are on the left hamming it up, sharing a mic & shaking their heads, Lennon just stands there flat-footed, squared up to the mic, and fucking DEALS. What a man!

What's Paul saying at the end? I caught something like, "Oh I love this place, America...", and then something about a radio.

The 5 people that dislike this can go die. Then when they are dead, John and George can beat them up :3

@cotchery Yes Yes I know. I just get bothered when people don't like them XD But I accept the fact that some people have no taste in some music :P Don't worry, pretty much 99% of the time I'm never bothered by it, but just for this video, I had to stick up for it ;P

Does anyone know why all the songs were performed a half-step lower than their original key?

She Loves You exploded out of the radio. The world was changed this evening. It probably looks very quaint now, but its true. Everything changed.

Forgot to comment on Paul's bass playing. He is the original ape man on the bass.

It's great to see PROFESSIONALS at work. Notice how they don't look like their in pain when they perform, unlike most of the people you see. George and John are mugging for the camera while busting some nice licks on the guitars. These guys paid their dues and it shows in their masterful live performances.
