is it necessary to use a pick if you are a beginner?

It isn't uncommon for some guitarists to only strum with their fingers, but this can really depend on the style of music you are playing. For example, in some songs John Mayer will switch between fingerpicking and then strumming with his fingers. As a beginner, I would recommend that you try to become comfortable playing with a pick.
