  • I am trying to update my Tom Tom one, 3rd edition with new maps but not at the frankly laughable price that Tom Tom are asking....

Why would I want to spend £60 on 4 updates over the next 12 months ?

I am looking for a SINGLE (one off) update - any suggestions ?

  • Thanks for this vid.

  • .my friend erased his tomtom software without makeing a backup ,thinking that he could install a better one . he installed the new version, but it doesn't show anything , like its empty or something , now he doesn't know what software was and how to install it ...can u help ....

  • If he has the CD that came with the unit, he should be able to re-install. Mine got wet when mounted to my motorcycle and no longer functions. I replaced it with a 930XL

  • @dcarico Could you hear it speak while you were on your motobike? You should of slipped a plastic bag over it.

  • i just didnt use enough ummph... hilarious

  • thanks for the review

  • your accent is the funniest

  • There is any way to install IGO 08 on this TOMTOM? I know igo 08 need windows mobile! So Can I install windows mobile on tomtom one?

  • Is that hole really for a dash mount??? I thought it was for the cord that controls your traffic feature.

  • good review

  • if its jus 2 hrs of battery life, cant u jus keep it hooked up to the cigarette lighter adapter and keep it charging?

  • Yupp it does work this way. 2hrs without charging (kept-in-a-pocket-away-from-power-socket)

  • What languages does that support?

  • According to the packaging, the interface supports the following languages: Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Flemish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, UK English, US English

  • Thanks for the help, but apparently it doesn't support the language I was looking for. Does anyone know of a good GPS that supports both English and Chinese?

  • The text to speech feature does speak in both Mandarin and Cantonese

  • Yeah, pretty much whatever it costs in dollars here, it costs in pounds there, that is an amazing rip-off. I don't know how they get away with that, but it's across the board with very few exceptions.

  • your accent is amazing

  • Believe me, if you ever hear my wife, you won't think I even have an accent . . .

  • Great advice, but I had to laugh at the fact that you're making your neighbor the target instead. LOL.

  • I'm thinking about getting one of these but I'm worried I'll run into the same problems I had with my garmin nuvi 200. Everytime I wanted to drive into the city, I would choose the "shortest route" and it would take through all the back roads which took forever. How is this with city driving and shortest distance routes? Thanks

  • I just picked up my GO 930 and was able to use it over the 4th of July weekend a little north of DC. The IQ routes worked great getting me away from the traffic and on some higher speed roads so I was very impressed. IQ routes aside, my experience with the ONE is that it gave me very accurate, direct routes. I didn't find it taking me out of my way, and when it suggested roads I wasn't familiar with, it was usually on par with timing from the route I would normally take.

  • Sounds good, thanks. I just remember trying to drive out of Philadelphia with my Nuvi and instead of directing me to route 76, it took me through the worst parts of the ghetto and the way home with 500 traffic lights. I think my Nuvi wanted me dead.

  • I actually went to visit a friend in Philly once and my cell died, so I had to stop at a payphone in one of those neighborhoods... not the best area to be. I think a lot of it has to do with the maps, TomToms use Tele Atlas and they're always really current with frequent updates

  • That is funny I just left UPenn yesterday with the Nuvi and it had no problem getting me on to 76 towards Phoenixville.

Garmin 200 with map updates. The absolute cheapest unit.

  • cdltpx- I agree with waiting on the iPhone too. Wait for Wimax to roll out and you'll be pulling speeds faster than 3G. I kind of have my sights set on the new Instinct, but I need to play around with one before I commit to buy.

The updates on the ONE 3rd ed. are solid. TomTom does the latest map guarantee with their new TomToms also within 30 days of purchase.

  • You can ask it to give you alternative routes

  • Hi, Excelent review.

I live in England. Would I be able to set the tomtom one v3 so that it does not direct me onto motorways?

  • Yes, you can, by chhosing an alternate. It asks you what you want to avoid.

  • Some folks ride in a taxi or a bus and might want to know where they are when they are riding. Would be great to know if your taxi driver is trying to gyp you and ride you all around. So the battery life might be important to this group of consumers. Duke you did a good review it looks like this device doesn't have a plug to hard wire it into an amplified audio where the noise is too loud to hear the device barefoot but it points out the route visually well.

  • I know a lot of the NYC taxis are doing that now. Not sure which ones they were using, but the 130S would be a good place to start ;) The one thing I hate is getting overcharged by cabs that take roundabout routes.

  • The new I phone will have a gps installed how well it will work will be your guess but if it can plot your progress as you ride the taxi industry will be a lot more honest with the introduction of this new device. If you rather use your gps that has low battery life program your route while near power and when you get in the cab power unit or plug it in the cab. If a cabbie is using a gps odds are he is honest and just needs the help.

  • Oh I meant that it has a GPS built in the back seat so the passengers can track where you're going. I don't think I've been in a cab in NYC where cab drivers need a gps- they know those streets inside and out. DC's another story.

I'm pretty excited to see TomTom partnering with Apple to use its Tele Atlas maps.

  • Great service to the customer and a great way to prevent a improperly concieved report. The legitamte drivers that use this probably have the lowest complaint ratio from customers.

The last part you said tomtom apple does this mean the apple will be pretty close to the tomtom in its function?

  • It should mirror the functionality of a TomTom. From what I've read, the software is ready to go for the iPhone, but there is a clause in the SDK agreement stating "applications may not be designed or marketed for real time route guidance." If all goes well- the mapping and functionality should mimic those on TomToms. Just that pesky clause...

  • Thanks for the reply I think I am going to get a stand alone gps and update the I phone later. I would like the 2x faster iphone but in a year they just might have a 3x faster iphone I paid a lot for the phone need to glean more use for my money. I hate I paid for the warranty these pukes should refund that but we know we will never see it.

  • I use the ONE 3rd edition too. Great little device. I'd like to upgrade to the TomTom 130s soon to take advantage of the text to speech feature on it. Nice review!

  • Great Informative on product.

  • I've had the One since Christmas, I'm curious, how do you update the maps, and I thought updating was free? Also what's the code that comes with it about?

  • Install the CD that came with the one, then plug the USB adapter up and its an option from the software.

  • You get one free map update within 30 days of purchase. You connect through the TomTom HOME application.

  • So, after 30 days, you have to buy the new maps from TOMTOM eh? That sucks.

  • No you dont have to buy any maps, you can update the pre-installed.

If you purchase other maps for specific regions in the USA, you would have to pay to update only those. But you DO NOT PAY to update the maps that were factory installed.

I own a TomTomONE, 3rdEdition, and say this from my personal experience.

  • Please state your experience then. My experience is that you could update for free for 30 days, then buy new maps if you wanted/needed to after that.

  • or you can just download it a...legal ^^

there is much to find for if you are looking in the right place's

  • You can just download it a ...legal?? I'm sorry, I don't understand the comment.

Is there a reason you're not specifying these 'places"? If you have some info that will help the rest of us, we would appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

  • You can update it legal with means you have to pay for it or you search for torrentz and download it and instal it . but downloading torrentz is so far i know not allawed.

Sorry for my bad english i'm dutch ^^

  • Torrents aren't the best way to go. If you bought the device new, you can upgrade the maps for free. If you tried and had trouble, call TomTom customer support. They're usually more than willing to bend over backwards to help their customers

  • Go and install the software from tom tom's web site called TomTom Home,

it will allow you to update your GPS with FREE map updates, and upload any corrections you have so you can share with others. You can download the updates for free, till the cows come home, you only pay for the maps that werent pre-installed on your GPS.

Install this software, update your device, and you will see its free, I've had my tomtom for about 5 months now, never a dime spent on updates. I update often.

  • Ok, I'll have to give it another look. I installed the software on day one, but maybe I misunderstood something here. I would have sworn they were only available for free for 30 days. Although tomtom did send me emails asking if I'd like to buy updated maps?? Why would they do that if the updates are free? Very confusing at times.

  • I know what you mean.

I thought I had to pay too at first.

    The maps pre-installed are national.

    And are free to update.

The maps you can buy are regional.

The regional maps do cost money, and are optional.

I also found out that TomTom is the only GPS maker (that I know of) that allows for corrections and share them with others.

Magellan and Garmin dont do that.

I dont know about Navigon, Mio or

  • True dat, the customer generated changes are an excellent idea.

  • Once you register your product (create account and log into it) via TomTom HOME application your 30-day trail starts. Product is registered, you receive a single map update for it + free core system updates all the time. If you happen to connect at a later time you will ONLY receive the map that was "assigned" to your unit once you have activated it.

Check tomtom website for details on it or simply ask helpdesk via email.

    Regards

  • Also if it costs money to update the factory installed maps, dont you think this comments section would be flaming TomTom right now for that. I dont see that happening.

Factory installed maps are free to update.

Basically this is the rule of thumb.

if it came already loaded on your tomtom, then its free to update.

  • Exactly, the factory installed maps are free to update within 30 days of activation of the device. Meaning you could keep it in the box for a few months and update your maps to the latest maps the first time you turn it on. The latest map guarantee ensures your TomTom will up to date the first time you activate it (with a download of course)

  • Not just 30 days, but for as long as you use them, so its not just 30 days.

    Free to update, existing map.

Its cost to get new maps.

Ive been updating my pre-installed maps for almost a year now, no charge.

Now if I want to install new maps, that is a charge, updating existing=no charge

    installing new map= charge.

    thats the major difference.

  • greatdemo, very helful thank you

  • Wow!

    I luv your accent!

    ..

i have on of these and its amazing! i was gonna get a navman fat screen one or a sony one but they ran ot of stock so i ended up buying these!

  • Based on this review, I picked one of these up. Great little GPS. Thanks for the help.

  • I randomly looked at this video as I am thinking of buying one of these units, little did I know the review would come from a fellow Kingsportian (or is it Kingsportite?)

  • thanks so much for the great review and for the advice on other to check out if this isn't for you. big thumbs up form me!

  • great gps, love mapshare on this thing....oh text to speech is awesome added bonus

  • It would be if it had it! Doesn't!

  • text to speech is an excellent feature...love its compact size and durability

  • tomtom should pay you for the advertisement

  • Did I mention that I am in charge of sales for Tom Tom? ;)

  • thanks.

  • that's a great tip, thanks! My TomTom should arrive in a few days and I'm going to make my neighbor "Home"

  • i can get it for 30 pound

  • this is a great gps, excellent review. I like the user interface the most, very simple and easy to use. Also, tomtom has the best looking devices in the market!

  • Thanks for the excellent tip! Kind of like the security on my Daughters phone. She told me she wasn't planning on losing it, until two weeks later when it got stollen at the gym . . . . . Then she wished she had activated the "lock button". . . . . . Changing the home address right now!

  • well, you convinced me! i am buying it! thanks!

  • Nice review, I love mine. I found a lot of cool free voices and POIs online. Just keep looking around.
