  • Well thank you but think about it who landed in America with the instruments back then the Irish or the Black.I simply mean that the Black slave heard the music at Irish wakes which evoked their spirit they took it,the sound and stamped their own mark on it,"when they got instruments"and made it their own, early black music was nothing like it is now brother, live in denial if you wish but my records show it to be this way sorry its too sensitive for you to grasp..

  • @MrJohnathon17 Read about music from West Africa (Ghana, Burkina Faso, etc). The kapala (African banjo) and other string instruments (babatoni, etc) were played in Africa before the XV century; Their music has a strong resemble to the blues (specially their working ballads). If anything, the slaves adopted the guitar from Mexicans, instead of the fiddle from the northern Europeans. Do not be that ethnocentric. Open a book, it will not bite you! Next you are going to say potatoes are from Ireland

  • You know you are about to listen to something really special if the great Sonny Boy is introducing the artist!! Both are fantastic, true Blues Leyends! Thanks for sharing this gem, luizoak.

  • Jeff blues came from the Irish in America so white people knew all about it matey..

  • @MrJohnathon17 Thats complete nonsense , how about you irish get your own music and stop trying to steal from blacks.

  • OMG, allllll white people in the audience. I dig Dixon on the bass though :)

  • Reading on him on wiki, "is recognized as the first to play single-string guitar solos".

How do you do that? Wow he sure as hell has it down!

  • Who was the guy in the beginning?

  • @1m2a3t4t5 He is the great Sonny Boy Williamson II. A fantastic Blues harp player and singer. There is another Sonny Boy Williamson (I). He was also a great harmonica player.

  • What can be more delightful to see and hear?: Lonnie Johnson introduced by Sonny Boy Williamson!!!

  • He is so amazing. I think he did the guitar work in one of my favorite old blues works ever, The Risin' Sun by Texas Alexander. Does anyone know for sure if I am right?

  • ooooh, it`s great!!!!!

  • Sonny Boy is the damn man. Look at him walk out! Wow. Love Lonnie too of course. This is a trip thanks xx

  • muito bom :)

  • This is amazing, why have I not been listening to it all my life??

  • Moving! This is so cool

  • @rocktenniscats i think it was in the Europe in the American Folk Blues festival

  • What kind of guitar is Lonnie playing? Fancy head! Thanks for sharing this, it's wonderful....

  • with greatest respect here's a tribute to Lonnie and this song

    youtube.com/watch?v=LQNbbyUfhmo

  • Why is the audience doing what can only be described as a polite clap.

I would have been on my feet!

  • Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Willie Dixon on the upright fiddle.

And how about that uber-cool drummers style???!!!!!

  • @TheSpecialSelection I have just learnt this with my guitar teacher. I got intro down... I could tab it with a piece of paper and send it if you like? message me your email if you want it.

  • That groove is sooooo smooth.

  • look at that right hand!!.... very similar to gypsy picking, relaxed, great control. And I can see where George Benson took inspiration for his own picking.

    Berry guitar style

  • damn, the guitar n voice is just flowing out of him. so perfect tho.

It's on DVD in the series THE AMERICAN FOLK-BLUES FESTIVAL.

I think it's on the British Tours disc...it is awesome!

  • Crazy good.

  • RIP Macho Man

  • This is what "black radio" is missing with regards to music and culture. The English and EU's know it better than Black N. Americans and you don't have to be over 50 to appreciate what he did or those who maintain it today. But where is radio and television in America? Global but not local.

  • And when I mean soul, I mean SOUL.

  • i aints raciscit tho!

  • i bet they got they own chikin recipie!

  • Amazing! Does anyone know if this footage is available on DVD? Love it!

  • @peterdixonband "The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966 vol. 1" available at amazon, etc. There are three volumes, some really great stuff on them.

  • Year? You know you can type the basic info in the description part of the video.

  • he is doing all downstrokes... and not a hint of RSI at all D:

  • The Pianist is Otis Spann.

  • That's the shit right there! You just can't get better than that... it isn't possible!

A legend introduced by a legend playing the most exquisite guitar, all the while singing magnificently.

One of the greats for sure!

  • This is great guitar playing and singing by the great Lonnie Johnson, I love the introduction by Sonny Boy Williamson. These guys just have have talent flowing out of them. Does anybody know who is on the keyboards

  • Actually T-Bone first recorded back in the twenties too, about the time Lonnie

was coming up, so its hard to say one came before the other. For that matter

Lonnie teamed up with Eddie Lang in 1929, so who can say who came first?

I recently heard Brian Setzer claim to be the first guitarist to lead a big band,

and I nearly bit my tongue! All the blues cats-- T-Bone, BB, Lonnie and more-

    stood out at the front of the bandstand long time ago....;

  • so is this sonny boy williamson doing the intro then?

  • got the blues forever baby

  • Freakin Beautiful...and seeing Rice Miller introduce Lonnie.HOLY COW!........Lonnies tone and fretting YIKES..........in the presence of a Master.......we are so lucky to have this on tap..................like goin to Heaven!

  • Who is the person that does not like this? he is losing one of the best things in life: listen to Lonnie Johnson. Lonnie: Thanks!, R.I.P.

  • Sonny Boy Williamson number 2 to be exact

  • That right there is the shit, he predates T-Bone by over a decade

  • How can you not like this.

  • Sorry if I sound nostalgic, but it's impossible watch a video like this and do not think that those days was much better than nowadays.

  • @jyps Much better like what? Those talented gentlemen were treated like shyt in your so called better days!

    Check that history!

  • OMG this is AMAZING. Thank you for posting this!!!!

  • many folks dont know that this man invented run on.s which became standard in delta style and even piedmont styles. He basically went un acknowledged until the mid 70s when it became part of all misic theroy classes taught in this country. Now we all know about call and responce but it was the run on that led to guitar presentation of this popular method..........ok (spell check) gotta run my boss just saw I was on youtube again.....grrr

  • everybody always talkin about guitar tone, well THAT is guitar TONE!!@#$%@#$%T

  • Is that Sonny Boy Williamson doing the introduction?

  • @CadillacL: yes

  • @CadillacL yes

  • Yeah, that's Sonny Boy

  • @CadillacL

    Yes.

  • If you like single note lead guitar you'd like this video. Lonnie invented it.

  • "Music is Joy, Right" - Keith Richards

And Lonnie Johnson is a true reason Keith is right.

  • sweet sweet sweet

  • Please, someone figure a way to show this video to todays pop "artists", maybe theyll learn something about music, feeling, soul, talent etc., maybe some of this beauty will rub in, or maybe theyll be ashamed and retire and then all of us can live happily ever after.

  • @HaddyD Sonny Boy Williamson

  • The blues is the blues!

  • I love this song.

  • Electric blues guitar begins here.

  • Lonnie Johnson was one of the recorded influences on Robert Johnson. I love seeing Sonny Boy Williamson intro him.

  • There is a sound man. It's normal to have the reverb turned off for the announcer and then turn it on for the performer. But the sound man turned the reverb up too far once the announcer was done, and then had to bring it down once Lonnie started singing.

  • Lonnie Johnson had great technique on the guitar, very accurate bends and slides.

  • yeah thats a great idea, show shots of the band plodding along while off camera he knocks out a genius solo.

  • OK rockers....now search for Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

  • 1:27 Yes! Totally ass-kicking.

  • whos the guy at the start?

  • @mustsilm Sonny Boy Williamson. Legendary blues harp player :)

  • @Horashima

    He walks so coolly.

  • @mustsilm Sonny Boy Williamson is correct; I believe the gig was the 1963 American Folk and Blues Festival; he is accompanied by Memphis Slim on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, etc.

  • early R&B?

  • I have Lonnie Johnson on my ipod and I listen to him now 70/80 odd years later and he inspires me to keep writing songs. A welcome reminder that music is eternal and immortal. I get excited at the thought that possibly in 2100 a kid may discover my music and that it may inspire them to write and create.

  • one of my all time favs of blues men, he plays with so much class, sophistication and sweetness, he is deep :-)

  • Mmmm - I had to have yet another look. Sweet.
