I adore this song and I sing that Del Monaco has the enormous and outstanding voice to make the preforming of this song the most superb. Bravo Del Monaco
Gastaldon would have thought all his Christmases had come at once if he'd heard this performance. A rather innocuous little song transformed into a beautiful aria. Bravo Mario.

@antonellolvr This is a dramatic interpretation of this song coming from a dramatic tenor, making it unique because of his verismo style of singing and showing off his vocal power. Ofcourse the other 3 tenors you mention are wonderful tenors as well , but in a different way.Enjoy
This clip is from a Sunday night series called The Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan brought all kinds of acts on his show, e.g., Del Monaco could be followed by a dancing bear act. I remember waiting to see Mario that Sunday night around 1958, and as the clip shows, he was magnificent.
..MARIO del MONACO has preserved his AMAZING ,POWERFUL voice till the end of his scenic career in 1975..probably due to his NATURAL GIFT ,and ''the strong method'' of Arturo Melocchi -- ''Maestro Eccezionale'',his vocal teacher..:-)
Even with todays voice projection microphonics, contemporary recordings pale to this. To borrow someone else's description, MDM's voice is like Niagra Falls
This is very good singing from Mario. Usually he belts & forces like a lunatic, but when he backs off a bit & lets the voice produce its volume from natural resonance, it has an extremely attractive timbre & a nice tonal flow. Excellent.
I have come back to watch and listen to this so many times...it's forte almost all the way through, but it's delivered in such an endearingly generous and larger than life way that just hits home. Love it.
Tottaly agree!!! And that's not all: even my 15 years old nefews come back and listen it again and again as well as I who send this clip to all my friends! Incredible dicover!!!
@aguacun I must concur and agree. I spent 1 1/2 hrs listening to many singers sing this wonderful song. Mario Del Monaco was in magic form this night. Dignified....sustained....power.....grace....tone....and oh that ending we all wait for! His rendition is the one to emulate...tho I love a few others....This is 'THE' Musica Proibita...for all time.
I'd like 2 point out something VERY important: Mario never lacks DICTION! No matter where in the range U always understand the lyric/word. There R quite a few who can't do this or chose 2 cheat 2 have an easier vocal production. Biggest example? Franco Corelli! Watch the "live" concert he does in Japan in the 70's & the "live" Boheme scene w/Freni. Count how many times he skips a consonant or just rushes 2 get 2 the high notes! In the Boheme aria, 2get2 the high C he goes: La-e(Scales)-a(?)What?
I loved him so much. I weep listening to him now, his voice is so open, honest and flowing. I've said before, we'll not hear this again. Call me sentimental, romantic, but he touched me in a way few other tenors have. Thank you, MDM.
Beautiful embrace of singer and orchestra. Divino Mario, had a heart as big as his voice. He had to sing this BIG, to express his all. Grazie mile Signori Tenor65!
Here is Del Monaco at his best. Easy vocal production, very consistent resonance and evenness of sound up and down, excellent intonation, brilliant sound.
Del Monaco went for "low larynx", that is, he at times had to "work" to keep the resonance cavity as open as possible. The Russians in particular experimented with this placement of resonators. Stay as relaxed as possible, but always with the larynx down, which on bad days can cost the body, and phonate with as small a vowel as you can. Pavarotti, so aptly from Modena where Ferraris are made, chose to allow the larynx to float on the purest Italian vowels since Gigle.
Gorgeous singing; engaged with the body; brilliant high notes and an absolute outpouring of sound. They don't sing like this anymore. Today it's all about placement, and whatever your opinions may be with regard to Mario's singing; I can only say that it's a shame our opera impressarios opt for youth and looks, rather than great sound.
Look, the guy is awesome, his voice is full and strong, has a wonderful timbre and a great range but.....he is making and effort. Sorry. He's pushing. You can see him strained in getting the fortissimo and the high note together. Luciano didn't. He was getting them walking, with an ease that I never saw at anyone else, ever. With all my respects to Domingo, Lanza, Vickers or Tucker besides aaaalllllll the others, but Luciano was doing this sleeping. Maybe, perhaps, quizas....just maybe...Gigli?
What did this video have to do with pavarotti? Nothing! But in response one should say all tenors have their streanths and weaknesses, there is no absoulte best, it is a matter of prefrence, for me I prefer streanth and size in voices, so I will always choose manaco over pavarotti.
Of course he is making an effort but pushing is absolutely the wrong term to use. You are obviously not a trained singer to be able to throw around terms as you do. Using neck/facial/jaw muscles etc. is NOT pushing the voice. He would NEVER be able to get that incredible focus or ringing squillo if he was pushing, it would get caught in the throat.
I appreciate your words and it's also true I'm not a trained singer, although I did sing many important ouvres and also recorded some. Fact is that Pavarotti gets the high notes without straining any muscles of the neck/facial/jaw area and it's not coz he covers them with his garments or his body fat. Can it be that the size of the diaphragm matters as Del Monaco was much shorter and slender than Pavarotti? Sorry if the word "pushing" gave the sense of mediocrity, I just chose the wrong term.
The techniques of Pavarotti and del Monaco aren't really that different, but they are very different types of singers, and they emphasize different aspects. Del Monaco very clearly went for a big, powerful sound, and didn't mind showing how hard he has to work for it. Pavarotti was a lyrical tenor, with a much smaller voice than MDM. P still had to work very hard, although it may not have shown as much.
The size of the diaphragm doesn't matter, but the length of the vocal tract does. It can be extended e.g. by lowering the larynx, which in its turn is helped by lowering the diaphragm (the lungs will follow, causing a downward pull on the trachea). Both P and M did this, but M to a greater extent, and that last bit costs tremendous effort! I don't hear any unhealthy forcing in MDM's voice, but of course, his powerful style of singing may not appeal to everyone.
