  • Picky, picky - it should read Rosario. Course I never make mistakes on my uploads.

    Beautiful all round - Thanks.

  • What violinist could get away with those slides nowadays? Her singing and breath control though are stunning. We collectors go after fabled rarities and pay 100s for them and the joke is many of them aren't a third as good as this. Some pretty awful.

  • Haunting, beautifully mesmerizing. Thank you, dear Doug.

  • Doug, absolutely magic voice! Thank you. Maya

  • A loose English version, if I might: "The Nile's waters, always pale, flowing//The stars of night//The sphinx, the riverbank - two rows form//In the midst, our boat sails.//The beloved, leaning over the prow//Let your eye wander over me sweetly//Holding his head, I tremble//My flaxen hair on his knees.//And the great sphinx in the endless plain//We watch them all pass by//In the confusion there is harmony//Love falling in on us." Translation by me, 2010 Hope this helps. a

  • @cypher133

Thank you... VERY much... and please continue to be in touch! All Best. Doug --

  • The Nil by Xavier Leroux is one of the melodies I love the much. Definitively bewitching...

And she's singing it so splendidly...

Thank you for this magic moment

  • @fan2jnrc

    In grateful appreciation... thank you!

  • Gluck was a great beauty and it must have been something to see as well as hear her sing like this! Zimbalist's playing, with his bygone-age style of restrained vibrato and UNrestrained portamento (the exact opposite of todays!) is quite heavenly too.

I love this mélodie, which Ninon Vallin also sang so well. A great posting. Thanks, Douglas.

  • Thank YOU! Have the Vallin here, so hope to have it up soon. Cheers, etc. Doug --

  • The poem is by Armand Renaud (1836-1895), one of the lesser Parnassiens.

  • While I get the generally drift, and at times some vivid flashes, have looked in vain for a translation. In any case, one of my favorite Gluck/Zimbalist collaborations.

  • Les eaux du Nil, toutes pâles, s'écoulent

The waters of the Nile, colourless, flow

Sous les étoiles de la nuit,

    Under the stars of night,

Des sphinx, aux bords, sur deux rangs se déroulent...

While sphinxes file by on rows on each shore...

    Au milieu, notre barque fuit.

    In between, our boat flees.

  • Le bienaimé, s'accoudant sur la proue,

The beloved boy, leaning on the bow,

    Laisse errer sur moi son oeil doux;

    Lets his sweet eye roam over me;

Moi, renversant la tête, je secoue

    Turning my head I shake

Mes cheveux d'or sur ses genoux.

My golden hairs over his knees.

  • Et les grands sphinx, dans la plaine infinie,

And the great sphinxes on the infinite plain

    Nous regardant passer près d'eux,

    Watching us pass near them,

    Confusément versent une harmonie,

    Confusedly pour forth a harmony

Qui tombe en amour sur nous deux.

That falls like love over us two.

  • Wow! Thank you very, VERY much! As beautiful as Ms. Gluck's voice, technique, style.... and appearance! Thanks again! Doug --

  • @CurzonRoad A loose rendition into English, if I might: "The Nile's waters, always pale, flowing//The stars of night//The sphinx, the riverbanks - two rows form//In the midst our boat sails.//The beloved, leaning over the prow//Let your eye wander over me sweetly//Holding his head, I tremble//My flaxen hair on his knees.//And the great sphinx in the endless plain//We watch them all pass by//In the confusion there is harmony//Love falling in on us." translation by cypher133, 2010.

  • I always love Gluck's singing, and this piece is no exception. Her beautiful and unusual timbre, sense of line and style, and musicianship come to the fore in this selection. Thank you, Doug, for posting.

  • My Darling Douglasio,

    SUBLIME!

So very Romantic. I love her Exquisite voice and the delicate violin and piano accompaniment. Merci.

  • After listening to Gluck's sublime singing,

it is not surprising she was such an in-

fluential artist despite her short career!

    Beautiful interplay between voice, violin

    and piano! Thank you!

  • Doug,

How lovely...I have chills just listening to it !

Thank you for sharing this wonder....
