  • Maybe if you all werent retarded, you would realize that it doesnt have to be either A) a rip off, or B) not a rip off. Thats why its called theorizing, because people are entitled to their own ideas and/or opinions. My personal theory is that The Decemberists could have gotten inspiration from the Bon Jovi song Wanted Dead or Alive. If you compare the album covers for Slippery When Wet and The Hazards of Love, you can easily see the similarities... Use your noggin...

  • Poor Shara. = (

She's just jealous and lonely. I have an ex that kidnaps practically everyone I date. We're still friends, it's just sort of this cute thing that she does.

Solution: three's a crowd and a crowd's a party if you add booze.

    ...

    just like in my fan-fic.

  • This song is heart breaking!

  • @blithium W.T.F are you saying??

  • @iluvbeer1776 If you'll look below my comment, you'll see a pages-long flame war about how this song is a ripoff of Bon Jovi. My comment was satire.

  • @blithium i admire your satire :)

  • @DaniBIndustries Well thanks :p

  • @jillybean190 "comment removed"

    Yeah, that's what I thought :p

  • @blithium cause i realized i didnt want to start a fight or anything. sorryyyyy :P

  • I love the way Meloy's voice breaks. I think he's one of the few musicians who can get away with it without sounding cheesy or like it was an accident.

  • @iaminvisibletoo I think it makes him sound morelike The Rake, more...real. Kinda scary 0.0

  • When I hear Margaret calling out "Oh, my own true love! Can you hear me love?" I get chills. Just twenty minutes ago, I heard William calling the same thing, same notes. And yet it was happy. He was glad to hear his love's approach. But when Margaret sings it, she's begging to be saved, and I hear utter despair. How did they manage to make the same theme have such different feels to it? "They're absolutely amazing." is the only answer that comes to mind.

  • I love this song on the CD im in love with it and want to learn to play guitar because of it!!!!!!

  • @macklilly One of the most positive comments on Youtube.

  • @mattburnside Thank you!

  • Colin Meloy's voice sounds even MORE amazing than in some of the other songs (if that's possible!)

  • Anyone who thinks this sounds like Bon Jovi's "Dead Or Alive" really needs to get their ears checked out. And since when were guitar arpeggios rare? FFS!

  • Yeah, it's musically similar to "Wanted Dead or Alive" but then... musicians borrow themes all the time. It's used in a totally different way, and these are thematically and musically very different songs.

  • only on youtube would you hear prats comparing Bon Jovi to The Decemberists The Decemberists are a hundred times more creative than bon jovi ever could be. And no this song sounds nothing like wanted dead or alive because when its done playing i dont want to throw my laptop out the window for making me hear that. quite the contrary actually im glad that i heard it and im happier because of it so no dont make comparisons based loosely on arpeggios because theres more to music then just chords

  • Bon Jovi WHO? eat a pill of fluff. I'll never listen to that crap....this however, is nice.

  • they totally copied bon jovi!

i mean, arpeggios? that is bon jovi-only territory! doesn't even matter that the chords in this song are completely different than the ones in "dead or alive", as well as the melody, and the words, and the structure of the song, and the style/genre of music, and the subject of the song. i mean, does any of that really matter?

i agree: nobody should ever use arpeggios, ever, for anything. not like it's a fairly common style of picking or anything anyway . . . .

  • @theflyshowmethesky Love the sarcasm, I lol'd when i read this.. Why so much hate for this song when the other 17 have nothing but good things. The entire album is amazing.

  • @theflyshowmethesky Because Bon Jovi has written entire, on-going, perfection albums such as this and TOTALLY wrote the concept of that album off an amazing book. Yeah, no. They didn't copy Bon Jovi.

  • and i wanted dead or alive and i rideeee

  • This called a rock opera, Emiliodfdf. It's essentially one long story set to music.

  • who is this margaret they keep singing about?

  • You have to read through the lyrics of the album to understand it. It's poetry set to music order to sell the poetry. The lyrics are far more dense (that's good btw) than you'd suspect just by listening to the album. To run through this would deny you the pleasure of understand. Seriously, I'm not just bullshitting.

  • @Emiliodfdf ...I could swear it's me.

  • @Emiliodfdf in the CD there is the lyrics and there are characters. William Margret The Rake. William is Margrets love and she is calling out to him for him to save her from the Rake who has captured her you really need to get the CD

  • why all the negativity? If you dont like the song, fuck off and don't listen to it! The Decemberists rock my world

  • what do you do when you want to play prog but arent good enough at playing music to do it?

well, you leave bitchy moany comments on other bands youtube videos, apparently.

  • yeah man definitely, coz 'Wanted Dead or Alive' was the first song ever to play a descending arpeggio over a root bass note

  • only one comment on this list has a positive rating. made me laugh

  • really enjoying the latter half of this album :)

  • ahaha noice

  • yeah, i totally think everyone should like the same things!

  • uhh.. ok...

  • you guys.... seriously.... if you don't like the song just go listen to something else. if your sick of the decemberists, why would you click on one of their vids?

  • Seriously CaimanPat, these guys must be pretty retarded (sorry if I offended with the use of the word retarded)

  • It's allll the saaaame, only the words have chaaaaanged, they're copyiiiiing, Dead or Aliiiiiive.

Glad to see I'm not the only one sick of these guys.

  • terrible terrible terrible

  • off key off key off key

  • how the fuck did bon jovi not sue the fuck out of them by n- wait the decemberists are completely irrelevent. Okay!

  • @Chigorinn because why the hell would bon jovi go around suing every band that uses arpeggios in a song like they own that style of picking . . . . ?

  • on a steel whip i (ghost) ride~~~~

  • My God, I never thought I'd be in a situation where Bon Jovi is the lesser of two evils.

  • aah sorry didn`t notice.. that u all were talking about tihis.. now i c that anubody noticed the similarity..:D

  • heey this sounds just like bon jovi`s wanted dead or alive..

  • Oh goodness, i saw this end to end live last night at the pavillion and it was insanely amazing like i was shaking i was so excited and impressed. i like cant even explain how incredible they are live.

  • It's not exactly like Dead or Alive, but is slightly similar. They may have not known, had this idea, and thought it would sound good.

2:30 is the start of an EPIC part!!!

  • I just saw these guys this weekend in Chicago at Northwestern University for free. They played this whole album through without stopping, it was amazing!

  • The whole album is supposed to sound like one song. It tells one story, like a play, and even has An Intermission.

  • lolz lolz lolz what are country folks doing listening to idie?

  • it does sound like Dead or Alive but I love how creepy his voice sounds in this one.

  • Ya, sounds like Wanted Dead or Alive to me too as well.

  • Some of Colin Meloy's vocals sound like the sound of Our Lady Peace. Which is weird.

  • I never noticed that, I can kind of head what you're saying. Funny since Our Lady Peace is my second favorite band, with the Decemberists as the first.

  • you like terrible bands and should be ashamed

  • the acoustic guitar kinda reminds me of the ending parts of pearl jams 'jeremy'

just go check it out before denying it........

    great song anyways

  • yeah it does sound a little similar

  • Like the Decemberists' take on the riff much better. Lol!

  • sounds like Bon Jovi--and I'm not being a complete asshole.

  • u are so right

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH thats hilarious! they totally copied dead or alive :P its ok though cause the rest of the albums completely different xD

  • nope that's wrong. it's Wanted Dead or Alive.
