Hi emac! Quick question: what's the difference between Green Poison and Redsnow? I know that unlocking/updating through Redsnow is way easier and your tutorials are really helpful but one thing I noticed is that my iPhone 3G (I'm on 4.2.1) became slow. I am now trying to downgrade my phone to 4.1 hoping that it will be faster. Does Redsnow affect the performance of the phone? Thanks! Will wait for your reply. :)

@maicafrances All iPhone 3g performance will be slow on 4.1 & 4.2.1. Jailbreaking tools do not effect performances on i_Devices. If you wish to downgrade, then do so in DFU mode. Do not downgrade to 4.1 or 4.0. Reason being all 4.XX versions will have same slow performance. Go down to 3.1.3 or 3.1.2.

And if you want to be on 4.2.1 , try to install a tweak from Cydia 'Speed intensifier' . This will increase performance on your iPhone a bit. You will see the difference.

Hey thanks. I was able to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to 4.1 but my iPhone was unable to recognize the sim. Then I tried to unlock it from the utlrasnow repo and now it is working like a charm. Hope this helps someone. Thanks again.

I think I can answer myself, after re-reading the steps I was that I should had use ultrasnow instead blackrain, right? damn!! So, learn kids, custom firmware are compatibles only with ultrasnow....

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded the iTune 10 on my computer. Now it is asking me "A version of the iPhone Software is available (version 4.2). To update your iPhone with the latest software, click here". What will happen to all my software on my current iPhone if I follow through? Will I lose anything? @benedictxx Right click on your iPhone name in iTunes. You will have few options. Choose 'Backup'. Once backup is done, then after following this video your iTunes will give you an option to restore from your last backup automatically. Only your Contacts, Pics, Notes, etc. will be saved.

Hey emac! This was very very helpful. I upgraded all iPhones in the family to 4.1 which I wanted to do for a long time now.

Some issues though. While one of the iPhones (3GS) is working perfectly. The other 2 (1 3G and 1 3GS) keep going into safe mode almost immediately after booting up. Any suggestions?

It has worked for me before on a different phone but on my current phone I am only getting "The iPhone ... could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)." I am using iTune 10.1.2.17. I can get the restore.ipsw loaded with RedSnow, no problem. I just fail with iTunes when attempting to restore with the custom ipsw. I redownloaded the ipsw, no luck. Help.

figured it out this is important you need to be able to acces a wifi after you do this becuase you will have no service so that means no internet acess which means no cydia and if you have anything important apps piks note etc be prepared to lose it all lol i wasnt if i had known that i wouldnt have did this but it works just a couple downside thats all

Q3. I have 3G[S], FW=3.1.3(JB thru Jailbrakeme),BB=05.12.01, in case the Custom firmware is the same as I said in Q1 and embedded with new BB such as 05.14.xx then I would definitely get errors while restoring in Itunes. Agreed??
